Kattegat
Ragnar and his men were at sea all night, and the waves were strong. There were many close calls. Sophia felt many small heart attacks when she thought the ocean waters would flip the ship over. Deep down, she was scared but wanted to keep a strong face for Estrid's sake. Estrid would scream and tremble, but Sophia would always be beside her.
It was now mid-afternoon, and the waters were calm. Some of the men were fishing to get some food. The young women watched everyone in the boat. Sophia noticed that she would receive glares from Lagertha now and then. However, the young woman would ignore her. Lagertha disillusioned her, but at the same time, the shieldmaiden didn't fully trust her. How could Sophia dislike her for that? On the other hand, Sophia considered another option for why Lagertha could act as she was.
Jealousy.
Sophia let out a long sigh. "Great, here I thought I would be free from trouble," she thought. Then, she felt Estrid's head on her shoulder. Sophia looked down and saw Estrid was half-awake. "Hey, Estrid, are you okay?"
Estrid's eyes were half-opened. "Hungry..."
"Let me ask if there's food. I'll be right back." Sophia gently put Estrid by the pole and went to Ragnar, who was looking forward. "Ragnar."
He looked at her.
"My friend is weak and was wondering if the food was available?"
"We are trying to get fish. However, we are not getting lucky. Our best chance for food is to head to Kattegat. There is plenty within its waters, and there's also land."
This caught her interest. "Kattegat, eh? I don't know why this sounds familiar."
Ragnar eyed her and let out a chuckle. "It's nothing but water and small lands. The waters there are treacherous, but fish can be plentiful."
"Oh."
"Not afraid of strong waters, are you?"
"Of course not! As I said, Estrid is hungry. As long as well have our fill, then I'm happy. Besides, is there something you would like me to help with?"
As Ragnar was about to respond, Lagertha came along. "Ragnar, we are almost to Kattegat. We are preparing for the waters. Should we also land once we arrive?"
"Yes." He then eyed Sophia. "Go to your friend."
Sophia did what Ragnar told her and went to Estrid. "We'll be going to Kattegat and will get food soon. Just hold on."
Estrid merely nodded.
Moments later, the boat was sailed to what was Kattegat, and Sophia was surprised and a little disappointed. She hoped that Kattegat was an actual village, but it was nothing more than fiction from the show she saw. Sophia saw land and many small islands. The currents were influential as the boat sailed by, making the occupants almost lose their balance. Sophia held onto Estrid, who was a bit weak.
Ragnar gave commands to keep the boat steady and that they would land on a reef shore. After an eternity, the boat hit land, a small island. "We will rest here for the night. Start looking for food. Everyone did as Ragnar commanded them.
Sophia untied Estrid. "It looks wet out there. Stay here a bit. Will you be okay?"
"Yes, I'll wait for you here."
Sophia then noticed a long stick, other materials, and even a small knife. An idea popped up. She looked around; the rest of the Vikings were out hunting some marine life. They were also hunting seagulls if need be. The young woman got off the boat, and while walking, she saw a green frog. She remembered poisonous ones, and the frog seemed to be safe.
The young woman got her knife and stood still. She focused on the frog and her strength. She threw the blade at the frog with her speed, impaling it. "Bullseye!" Sophia grabbed the blade and frog; its blood dripped on her hand, but it didn't faze her. She put the frog on the boat. "Here, Estrid, make sure nothing happens to it; we will cook it."
"Yes," Estrid responded weakly.
Sophia then got a hold of the stick and put on a small piece of rope. She saw some works beneath her. She got one and tied it on the end. She sat on the island's edge patiently for the fish to bite. "What are you doing?" asked Ragnar.
"Fishing. I'm waiting for the fish to bite."
"And how long are you willing to wait?"
"As long as I can. I even got a frog!" Then, she felt her line pull. The young woman noticed a wish, taking a bite of the worm. Without warning, she grabbed her knife and threw it at the fish, killing it instantly.
Ragnar saw this and let out a chuckle. "How did you learn to throw a blade?"
"I taught myself out of boredom and survival. I'm a traveler, so I need to learn some survival skills. Glad to see my practice paying off. Get me more worms, will you? We will be eating in no time."
The leader went to do just that. However, he didn't know why he was doing what Sophia was asking him to do. Maybe there was more to her than meets the eye.
