Attack

"There's an attack!" yelled Sophia.

Everyone in the building was silent, but another arrow, lit by fire, hit the grassy ground. Ragnar then got out a horn on the table and blew on it. The men and some shieldmaidens got their shields and weapons. Instead of running out to the exit, many of them broke through the walls of the building.

Sophia stood by the exit in shock, but her thoughts were interrupted when Ragnar ran to her. "Go with Yrsa and the children!" He then ran through the exit. He saw another arrow coming his way but blocked it with his shield. The Viking then hid by a house and looked at the environment; from afar, he saw an archer go back, hiding by faraway trees. "They're hiding, as expected." He then got his horn again and blew on it.

Suddenly, more men and shieldmaidens got out of some of the houses. "Archers! Shields!"

Then, many men made a row with their shields before them. Behind them were male and female archers, along with their shields. They stood behind the archers, and behind them was another row of warriors with shields. It was a pattern.

Lagertha ran with Ragnar; they stood side by side. "Where's the enemy?"

"Hiding like cowards."

"Do you think Itzvar has arrived?"

"I don't know, but we will find out eventually." He then ordered some male villagers to get fire torches and stand by the rows of archers.

Meanwhile, many of the villagers hid in their homes or other buildings.

Ragnar and Lagertha stood in the front row with their shielders. "Move forward!" Ragnar ordered. The rows of Vikings began to move forward and away from the village. Suddenly, narrow landed by one of the shielder's legs. "Archers!" All the rows stopped, and the shielders motioned out their shields. The archers' arrows were filled with fire and fired far. Many didn't hit the enemy, but only the grass from afar.

However, the fire lit up parts of the environment. Ragnar could see a few men hiding by the long grass and trees. Ragnar and his Vikings moved forward as the enemy archers threw more arrows with and without fire. Ragnar commanded them to walk and run ahead, getting closer to the enemy. From the corner of his eye, he saw one of the enemies trying to aim at him. Ragnar commanded the archer to strike the man. The archer saw the enemy and struck the man.

That action alone made some enemies lose focus and see themselves by accident. Ragnar commanded the archer to strike, killing some of the enemies. The fire from the arrows began to burn the grass, making it more visible to the enemy.

The enemy archers were in disarray, and Ragnar saw this as a chance and ordered the men and women to charge.

Meanwhile, Sophia was with Yrsa and the children in Ragnar's home. However, Sophia was worried for Estrid and Maja. "I'm scared," said Hilda.

"Don't worry, Mother and Father will stop them," said Thyra.

"I want to fight!" said Fridleif.

Yrsa held the twin girls while glaring at Fridleif. "You will do no such thing! Your mother and father want you all safe!"

Sophia stood up. "Where are you going?" asked Fridleif.

"I'm going to get my friend and Maja; I will bring them here. Don't worry; I will be back." Before the children said anything, she went on her way. From afar, she could see fire and fighting. She was worried for Ragnar but knew she had to get to Estrid. She ran to Maja's home, which was filled with arrows. "Estrid, Maja!?"

"Sophia?"

The young woman entered the house; she saw Maja and Estrid hiding in another room. "You're both okay, thank goodness!" Sophia helped Estrid stand.

"Sophia, what is happening?"

"We're under attack. It's not safe here. I will take you both to Ragnar's home!"

Maja was silent but assisted Estrid, who was still a little weak. The three women left home and quickly walked toward Ragnar's home. In the corner of her eye, she could see more Vikings coming from the opposite side from where Ragnar and his men were fighting. "Quickly! There are more coming!" The women finally made it to the house.

"You're back!" said Hilda.

"Everyone, get any weapon you can! There are more coming. An ambush is coming!"

"What!?" Suddenly, they all heard screaming in the village.

Sophia was scared but more afraid of what would happen to the children and the rest of the women. She and the others were in a dangerous situation where they all could get killed. In her modern world, she lived a good and comfortable life, but now that was not the case. The young woman couldn't rely on anyone but herself. Sophia now had to act on her instinct to survive. She slowly left the house while the children and Estrid called her.

Once outside, she saw the enemy in the village. Many women, the elderly, and other villagers were running or being killed. "It's like my dream." Sophia then saw a man charging at her. However, she saw an ax on the ground, picked it up, and swung it at the man's waist, puncturing through parts of him.

The man screamed in pain. Sophia got the ax out as the man fell to the ground, bleeding to death. She couldn't believe what she had done, filled with adrenaline. Sophia saw another Viking trying to rape a village woman, which enraged her. Her grip on the ax tightened as she ran toward the Viking. Her ax landed on the man's head, splitting his head into two.

The village woman cried in fear. "Go! Get any weapon you can to defend yourself!" The woman stood and ran off. "Ragnar's people! Get a weapon to fight! Fight for your home! For your lives! Come on!"

Many of the villagers got a hold of weapons and began to fight back. Fridleif managed to escape Ysra's grasp as he left his home. He saw when Sophia killed one of the enemies how she yelled for everyone to fight to the death. The sweet young woman he barely knew was filled with blood and a fighting spirit. The young boy got a hold of a sword, looking around. He began to run toward Sophia. The young woman noticed; her eyes were wide with horror. "Fridleif, what are you doing!?"

Then, she noticed another Viking charging toward the young boy. "Behind you!"

Fridleif turned; he raised his sword, blocking the enemy's attack. Fridleif would dodge or stop the attack, but his grip on the sword weakened since the man was stronger. Eventually, Firdleif lost hold of the sword and was about to be struck. However, Sophia threw the ax with both her hands. To her luck, it hit the man in the face, but it made him land on the ground, losing consciousness.

Sophia grabbed the sword and stabbed the man to death, ensuring he would try to kill Fridleif and her. Blood splattered on her, covering her face and dress. Fridleif watched everything; he trembled. "Fridleif, are you okay?"

The young boy nodded.

"Go back to the house!"

"I-I want to fight!"

"I said-!" Sophia saw two men coming their way. She didn't know if she would be able to fight them off. However, she got the sword ready to strike. Then, the two men were attacked by arrows, killing them.

Sophia saw Ragnar and the rest of the warriors running into the village and fighting off the rest of the enemy. A sigh of relief escaped her lips. She stood with Fridleif. "Come on, let's go back inside. I think we will be okay." Fridleif nodded as he went inside the house. Sophia sat by the exit with the sword in her hand. She watched Ragnar, Lagertha, and the others fighting off the enemy. However, she did not know that some enemy Vikings escaped the massacre.
