"Look what you made me do."

~2023 - present day~

It's a Monday morning, Adam Ruzek is sitting at his desk in intelligence catching up on some paperwork when Sergeant Trudy Platt walks up the stairs.

"Ruzek, Maddison Eaton is in the downstairs office. She said she has some info for you." Trudy informs him before turning around and walking back down the stairs.

"Thanks," Adam calls after her. He stands up, takes his gun from his holster and locks it in his desk drawer.

"What did you ask for info on this time?" Jay asks, curious. He's the only other member of Intelligence in at the moment since he also had paperwork to catch up on.

"A guy that's selling messed up oxy. It's got all sorts in - chemicals, molly, you name it." Adam tells him.

"Tell her hi from me," Jay says.

"Will do." Adam nods before walking down to the downstairs office. He walks into the office and sees Maddison waiting for him. She's wearing a black over-the-shoulder top, black ripped jeans and black Nike's. She has a backpack hanging off of her right shoulder. "Hey, Mads." He smiles, using the nickname he's been using for her for the past few years. "Platt said you had some info for me?"

"Erm-yeah." Maddison nods. "I got a name for that dealer." Maddison tries to avert eye contact.

"You high?" Adam asks her.

"I had to. To get close to this guy so he trusted me." Maddison defends herself. "I took some of my stash, I didn't want to take his dope so I could give you this." She takes a small baggie, with two pills in it, out of her pocket and hands it to Adam. "When he wasn't looking, I took my stash out and replaced them with what he gave me."

"I'll get this to the lab." Adam nods. "What's his name?" Maddison reaches into her pocket once more and takes out a slip of paper. "Let me guess, the guy has threatened you if you let slip it's him?"

"He's violent, Adam." Maddison swallows. "Really violent. I saw what he can do and I'd like to stay off of a morgue table."

"I could've come to you." Adam sighs. "If he's tailing you-"

"He's not." Maddison shakes her head, cutting him off. "He woulda grabbed me before I could step foot in the building." She adds. "Plus, I was on my way to school anyways."

"Shouldn't you be nearly at school?" Adam raises an eyebrow, looking at his watch.

"This was more important," Maddison replies. "I better go."

"Before you do, Halstead said hi." Adam relays Jay's message.

"Tell Freckles I said hi back and he still owes me a basketball game." Maddison chuckles, basketball is Maddison's favourite sport to play and so when Jay found this out, he offered to play a couple of games with her whenever she wants.

"You're still insistent on calling him Freckles?" Adam laughs.

"It riles him up." Maddison shrugs. "So yes." She carries on with a grin.

"Go on, get to school before you're even more late." He shakes his head, laughing. "I'll wire your payment to your account."

"See ya." Maddison smiles, walking out.

"Bye." Adam walks out behind her.

.

Arriving at school, Maddison sees that she's over almost half an hour late so she decides to take her time to her next class. She saunters into her classroom and takes a seat at her table. When she looks up, everyone is staring at her and she sees two firefighters, Kelly Severide and Matt Casey, from Firehouse 51, at the front.

So first grade. She thinks, rolling her eyes.

"Miss Eaton," the principal Mrs Caffrey, who is leading the session, places her hands on her hips, "care to explain why you're over half an hour late and not in the correct dress code?"

"One," Maddison leans forward, "I have no excuse, I'm just late." She leans back with a smirk on her face. "Two, don't care." She shrugs. Mrs Caffrey turns to Kelly and Matt.

"I am so sorry about this." she apologises to them before turning back to Maddison. "You either need to put a jacket on, or, go to lost property and find a different shirt."

"No." Maddison narrows her eyes. "Give me one good reason."

"Your attire is a distraction to other students." Mrs Caffrey simply states.

"You mean my shoulders are a distraction?" Maddison raises an eyebrow. "You do realise this sexist dress code you've adapted is completely unfair." Maddison stands up. "For example," She walks to her best friend, Mikey Strauss, who's wearing a tank top. "Mikey here, he goes to the gym. He lifts a lot of weights and it's quite evident." She says. "May I?" Maddison motions to his upper arm, asking for his permission to touch him.

"Do your thing." Mikey wiggles his eyebrows at her, knowing what she's about to do. Maddison stands beside him and places one hand on each bicep.

"Mikey's biceps are very distracting to me. Yet he's wearing a top exposing his shoulders." Maddison drops her arms and returns to her seat, slumping into it. "So why is it one rule for one gender, another for a different gender?"

"I won't ask again, Miss Eaton. Get into appropriate dress code." The principal crosses her arms, ignoring her.

"Are my shoulders distracting anyone?" Maddison looks around the classroom and everyone shakes their heads.

"Miss Eaton, do not ignore me." Mrs Caffrey states as she walks over to the young girl. She goes to reach for her, but Maddie abruptly stands up causing her chair to topple.

"You touch me, and I will scream bloody murder." Maddison stares her down. "You know I don't like being touched. Do you want to send me into a meltdown? Is that what you want? Send the only autistic girl in this class into an autistic meltdown? Wouldn't look so good in front of the visitors, will it?"

"You're suspended, you need to leave school property." Mrs. Caffrey says.

"So you're just gonna ignore everything I just said?" Maddison laughs. "Okay then." She nods before climbing onto the table. "My body is not a distraction!" She shouts, pumping her fist into the air. She continues shouting, after a few moments, the rest of the class stand and starts to join in. Matt and Kelly exchange a look, not sure what to do.

"That's enough!" Mrs Caffrey shouts. The shouts die down. "Sit down." Everyone, but Mikey and Maddison sit down. "Miss Eaton, please come down from there and make your way to my office." Maddison spins to face her.

"You always say that we should stand up for what we believe is right," Maddison states. "That. That is what I'm fucking doing." Mrs Caffrey goes to grab Maddison's lower arm. "Don't fucking touch me!" She yells, bending down a little and pushing the teacher away. Maddison jumps down from the table, picks her bag up from the floor, and storms out of the classroom.

"You shouldn't have touched her." Mikey walks up to Mrs Caffrey. "I'll take the firefighters down to the main office and then try and find her but I sure as hell won't be taking her to your office, I'll be taking her home." Mikey turns back around and approaches Matt and Kelly. "I'll take yous back down to the main office. I assume you don't want to be anymore."

"What makes you say that?" Kelly questions.

"Your faces." Mikey laughs. "You don't like the way this was all handled by Caffrey."

"Thanks." Matt nods with a slight smile. They both follow Mikey out of the classroom and down the corridor. "Is what happened today normal?" Matt asks as they walk.

"For Maddie? Yeah." Mikey laughs nodding. "She was diagnosed with autism when she was 12. A cop helped her and her parents get the diagnosis. She's been arrested quite a few times." Mikey stops and turns to face them. "When people see Maddie like she was today, they assume she just has a bad temper, a rebellious streak, and yeah, sometimes she is like that but when she's calm, you see the real Maddie. I've known her my whole life and she only gets like this when something has really ticked her off. There were two things today." Mikey continues. "Maddie sometimes struggles with clothing, the top she's wearing today, it's her comfort top. So being told she couldn't wear it by someone who's supposed to understand Autism frustrated her, the sexist comment wasn't just her masking her true feelings, she really does hate that there's one standard for some people, another standard for others."

"And the second was the Principal trying to touch her?" Kelly guesses.

"Yep." Mikey nods. "Maddie doesn't like being touched by some people for different reasons. With Caffrey, it's because Maddie doesn't like her nor trust her." His Apple watch pings, he looks down at it and sees the alert. "Crap, she's having a seizure!"
