1. Arrival
The choppy waves the boat sliced its way through mirrored the grayish color of the clouds overhead as Taehyung gripped the side of the boat like his life depended on it. The contents of the breakfast they had earlier that morning made a colorful reappearance as he leaned over the side, the boat threatening to buck him overboard as it crested another wave. Jimin knotted his fingers in the back of Taehyung's shirt to keep him anchored to the dock, tsking.
"Namjoon told you to eat light."
"Ugh..." said Taehyung, half in disgust at his current state and half because of his chastisement from Jimin. "Can you save the whole 'Namjoon told us so' bit for later?..."
"Fine," said Jimin as Taehyung nodded his head, turning to face the water again as what felt like round one hundred and one of nausea came over him. "If it makes you feel any better, I think we're almost there."
"We are!"
Jimin turned from the sick Taehyung to look for the owner of the happy exclamation, seeing Jungkook sitting on the upper deck of the boat. He had his legs dangling from the edge, his bare feet swinging back and forth as carefree as a child. Jimin watched as Jungkook pointed ahead of them with a smile on his face. As Jimin turned his head to look at where Jungkook was pointing, he noticed that Jungkook was right. Partially obscured by fog but becoming ever closer by the second was an island.
"So that's gonna be our home for the next month or so," said Jimin. If it wasn't for the fact that they were out here to film a reality show, he'd think they were about to be left on a deserted island.
The boat crested over another huge wave then, causing Jimin to turn his attention back to Taehyung to keep him on board while he got sick again. Jungkook seeing this moved to get up and slip on his shoes before climbing down the short ladder to be able to stand next to Jimin.
"How is there even anything left in him?" asked Jungkook.
"I don't know, but I've told him before he is full of it. Guess I was right."
As the two of them chuckled, a disgruntled Taehyung turned to look at the both of them.
"Cut it out the both of you, or you're going to wear it."
"No offense, but that fashion would stink," remarked Yoongi as he walked past them from behind with a smirk.
Taehyung glared at the still smirking Yoongi as he walked to the front of the boat as it navigated its way towards a dock that had seemed to appear out of nowhere. Now with the boat settling down through the choppy waters, Taehyung moved to stand up straight. Seokjin and Namjoon were walking by then with some of their luggage. Seokjin pulled up short momentarily when he saw how gray Taehyung was.
"I have something that might help you feel better," Seokjin said as he moved to put his luggage down, unzipping it before rummaging inside.
Taehyung watched as Seokjin soon unearthed a small bottle like it was some sort of treasure, holding it towards Taehyung. Taehyung took the small, unlabeled bottle, turning it about slowly with a cocked brow.
"What is this?"
"A special recipe, but it's guaranteed to make you feel better," said Seokjin.
Taehyung moved to uncap it, bringing his nose close to it to take a sniff, but immediately pulling back.
"It smells like something died in it."
"Just plug your nose," said Namjoon as he and Seokjin moved to carry the luggage towards the front again.
"Oh, stop being dramatic," said Jimin with a tsk as the elder two walked off. "It's not going to kill you. Just drink it."
"I can plug your nose if you want," volunteered Jungkook.
"I can plug my own nose, thank you very much," said Taehyung as Jungkook chuckled, sighing as he moved to bring the bottle to his lips. "Well, here goes nothing."
Taehyung had his back to the cabin as he drank the contents of the bottle as Hobi came out with his luggage and a yellow smiley faced bucket hat on his head. As Hobi walked past the three maknaes, he didn't notice that Taehyung was currently in the midst of drinking something. Since Taehyung was the closest, Hobi reached out to give him a friendly pat on the back. That pat sent Taehyung into a half choke as he coughed on the drink, spitting some of it out onto Jimin and Jungkook in front of him.
"Oh! I'm sorry! I didn't...are you okay?" asked Hobi as Taehyung turned to look at him.
"Fine," said Taehyung as Jimin and Jungkook currently worked on trying to brush the spit off their face with their shirts.
Blushing a bit, Hobi ducked his head in apology again as he went to go join Seokjin, Namjoon, and Yoongi near the front of the boat. Taehyung turned to see that Jimin and Jungkook were still trying to wipe at their faces even though they were now both dry. He was sure the scent was lingering like a ghost.
"Told you you'd both be wearing it," said Taehyung with a smirk.
"We've arrived!" the captain bellowed out as two crew members did an intricate dance of sorts to make sure they docked properly. "This is where I leave you for the month."
"And where is here exactly?" asked Hobi, not remembering the name of the place.
"Stepstone Isle," said the captain. "It's an uninhabited yet very scenic island where a lot of movies and shows are filmed."
As if on cue, three black jeeps suddenly came barreling down a dirt path, shooting up small dirt clouds into the air as they went. Taehyung, Jungkook, and Jimin had just gotten their own luggage and had joined the group as the three jeeps came to a halt a few feet from the dock. Soon the driver's door of the leading jeep flew open, and a man stepped out dressed in all black. A black baseball cap was squashed over the top of his head, sunglasses and a black facemask covering his face.
"Are we here to film a reality show or be kidnapped?" asked Hobi in a whisper into Namjoon's ear as they all watched the man walk down the dock towards them.
"Ah! You've arrived!" said the masked man as he drew closer, looking at the seven members of BTS that stood behind the captain, looking at him warily. "Why do you all look so afraid?"
When the captain made a motion to gesture at his own face, the man seemed to suddenly become aware that he was still masked up. Letting out a small 'oh' of exclamation, the man reached up to remove the sunglasses and mask. All seven members released a collective sigh of relief when they saw it was none other than the host of the show, Kang Dohyun.
Kang Dohyun was a face that was familiar to all of them, having grown up seeing him in various television dramas. At one point in Dohyun's career, he was an actor that everyone seemed to have developed a crush on. Now even though he was in his late forties, he still looked the same as he did in his youth.
'The man has aged like fine wine,' thought Jimin as Dohyun shook the captain's hand in thanks before shaking all of theirs.
"I'm so glad to see that you were all able to make it here safely despite the unpleasant weather," said Dohyun. "Please follow me. I'll take you to where you and the other groups will be staying during the show."
"Before we go, do you mind if I get a selfie with you?" asked Seokjin, moving to dig out his phone. "My mom's a big fan."
"That's perfectly fine!" said Dohyun with a grin that lit up his whole face. He moved to sling an arm about Seokjin's shoulder as Seokjin held his phone up in order to take a selfie.
The rest of them meanwhile helped to get their luggage off the boat, watching as the drivers of the other two jeeps got out to help tie their luggage down. The other two drivers were just as covered up as they silently and efficiently worked. Dohyun and Seokjin were soon joining them, Dohyun gesturing at the awaiting vehicles.
"Go ahead and get in! You're the first group to arrive so you'll get to look at the grounds first. It's quite an elaborate setup."
They all loaded into the jeeps. Namjoon, Seokjin, and Yoongi went in the first jeep. Hobi and Jimin went in the second while Jungkook and Taehyung got in the last one. As they sat in the vehicle, Taehyung couldn't help but to notice how spotless it was. It even still carried a faint whiff of new car smell.
Jungkook meanwhile was looking at the back of the person sitting in the passenger seat. They were as clothed in black as everyone else, but their frame was much more petite and curvaceous. The woman had her legs crossed with a sketchpad resting on them. Jungkook was just able to make out the shadowy dips of mountains as her pencil gently added to their depth.
"That's a really good drawing," said Jungkook as he leaned forward. "I'm impressed."
Without turning, the woman just let out a hum, continuing to shadow her mountains.
"You must be Jungkook."
"You can recognize me just from my voice?" he asked in surprise.
"It's kind of hard not to. You are all over the place," said the woman, putting her pencil aside as the jeep went into motion.
"What's your name?" asked Jungkook as the woman turned to look at him. Their gaze was blocked by the sunglasses still on her face.
"I'm Mimi," she said.
"Ah, Dohyun's daughter," said Jungkook.
He knew exactly who Mimi was. She was Kang Dohyun's only daughter, born during his fling with rising model and actress Shin Mi-Cha. Growing up, Jungkook had heard lots about Mimi, having had a small crush on her as he saw her appear alongside her father on a few of his television programs. When she hit her late teens, Mimi disappeared from the public eye. Jungkook didn't know if it was because she went to live with her mother who had apparently moved and married someone in the United States or if it was for other reasons.
Jungkook shifted to stick a hand out for her to shake. Mimi looked at the outstretched hand for a moment before putting her hand in his. As Jungkook let go of her hand and she turned to face forward again, he sat back in his seat, turning his head to look out the window as the trees seemed to swallow their vehicles whole.
