CHAPTER TEN
Chase's POV
We were running out of time. The site that was about to burn up from flames was leaking with a poisonous gas and before long, the entire building was about to explode.
"Bree" I stated. "Do a double check to make sure everyone's out of the building!"
She nodded and whizzed away.
"Adam, use your super strength to lift this equipment off of the workers!"
He did as I said and we helped the people outside.
"That's everybody." He said after he helped two more people out of the blazing flames.
"Everyone except Bree!" I realized. I pushed the talk button on my comset.
"Bree! Bree, can you hear me?"
"Yes, I can hear you." Bree replied. "I don't see anyone else here, so I'll start making my way back out."
Then, I saw the foundation of the building start to crumble.
"Bree! You'd better superspeed out of there fast! The building is collapsing!"
"Okay."
After a second, I looked all around, but I couldn't see Bree. With her superspeed, she should be out by now. Shouldn't she?
"Bree! Where are you?"
"I'm still in the building! The smoke is making my bionics glitch! My superspeed isn't working!"
"Hang in there, Bree! I'm coming after you!"
I heard screaming on the comset as more of the building collapsed. I felt a piece of me crush as I saw the building crushed.
"Bree! Can you hear me?" Nothing. "Bree, answer me! Please!" No reply. All I heard was the crackling of fire.
"I'm going in." Adam said as he ran into the building.
Adam's POV
I ran into the building, frantically searching for my younger sister.
"Bree? Bree? Can you hear me? Answer me, Bree!"
I heard coughing nearby and ran towards the sound. I couldn't believe how damaged she looked. Burns all over her arms and cuts everywhere (especially a big gash on her forehead) made me shudder. I couldn't bear to see my little sister like this.
"Chase, I found her." I said, coughing a little into the comset.
"Good. Bring her out, now! The building is falling apart." Chase commanded.
"Okay. Have you called 911 yet? We'll need to take her to the hospital as soon as you get her out. She's injured bad, Chase."
"Yes, I called 911. They're on their way. The important thing is to get her of there!"
I grabbed Bree, who was now unresponsive, and I carried her outside. I laid her on the ground where Chase joined me.
"Bree, Bree can you hear me" Chase shook her gently. Nothing. No response.
"Her pulse is hardly even there. She's dying, Adam." I teared up. I couldn't let this happen to my sister. I was supposed to be there to protect her and I failed!
"Adam, Chase? Is that- you?" Bree coughed with staggering breaths.
"Bree! You're alive!" Chase exclaimed.
"What happened?" She asked, confused.
"You were in a fire. Adam rescued you." Bree smiled weakly.
"I remember something." She said.
"What? What do you remember?"
"I remember seeing open tanks of nuclonium gasses... nu - lon- um. I inhaled it.... I feel- I feel-"
And then Bree's eyes slowly closed.
"No, nununo Bree! Bree! Stay with us! Please, Bree! You've gotta fight!" Chase screamed. That was it. Chase started crying and I did too. I couldn't stand this.
Bree's POV
I couldn't find the strength to keep my eyes open anymore. I let them close, and I couldn't understand what my brothers said any more. I heard sirens blaring and then darkness and a world that was isolated from love and happiness swept over me, engulfing me in blackness.
Chase's POV
"Bree! Come on, Bree! Open your eyes" I begged. I wanted to believe that she would be okay, but she was far from it. I heard the blaring sirens and knew that in a while I might not see Bree as the sister I once knew. I took her hand and Adam took the other, and we just started crying. I never wanted to see my sister this lifeless ever again. We heard some people yelling and we knew that the medics had finally arrived.
"Excuse me are you the ones who called us? The Davenport's?"
We nodded, and the four men lifted Bree's limp, lifeless body onto the gurnee and they wheeled her into the ambulance. Adam and I were allowed to ride in the ambulance to the hospital, and it was the longest ride I've ever experienced.
"What happened to her?" A medic asked.
"She was in a gas fire, and she was exposed to nuclonium gasses. Her leg also got crushed underneath a wooden beam that was burining." Adam explained.
"This is bad." The doctor told us as he examined Bree's body. "She's not going to hold on much longer if we don't get working! Come on, let's go!"
And right then and there in the ambulance they started working. An oxygen mask was placed over Bree's face, and the medic hooked the oxygen mask to a pump. He squeezed it a couple times, and each time he did, Bree's chest rose and fell.
They hooked up some monitors and stared taking her blood pressure.
"The tests for internal bleeding came out positive." A medic said. A large bandage was wrapped around her stomach, (apparently it was bleeding) and another medic tried to wake her up with no success.
"She stopped breathing" a medic yelled.
What? No, this wasn't happening. I ran over to Bree's side.
"Bree! Please, wake up! We need you! The world needs you! You've got to be strong, Bree." I sobbed. Bree twitched a little and coughed. She was breathing again! However, she didn't open her eyes.
We arrived at the hospital, and the medics rushed Bree inside. Adam and I followed.
Adam's POV
A doctor ran alongside of the gurnee and we followed behind. I was very concerned. Chase told me the side effects of overexposure to nuclonium. Seizures, comas, and overheating or even hypothermia. I hoped the doctors could heal her. And soon. As we were running alongside the gurnee, I noticed Chase wasn't alongside us. I looked back over my shoulder, and I saw him with his face towards the wall, his head buried in his hands. I ran back and hugged him gently.
"It's gonna be okay." I assured him. "She'll pull through."
He looked back at me, tears rolling down his face.
"But what if she doesn't?" Chase started crying again, and I did too.
I pulled him into a hug, and I noticed sympathetic looks from some people who were standing near us. After a few minutes, we found Bree's room and sat in the chairs outside her room waiting for them to let us in.
We sat outside as the doctors worked on her, but after about half an hour, the doctor called us in.
"Look, I know you guys have bionics, so if you could help me out it would really help Bree. You in?"
"Absolutely." We said in unison.
"Okay. I have a job for all of you. Chase, use your bionic eye to scan her and see if there is any extensive damage that I haven't spotted yet. Adam, I need you to operate all of my heavy machinery. It's a big responsibility, but I trust you. Let's get going!"
Chase's POV
Adam started hooking up the monitors and machinery, but before I could start scanning Bree, something terrible happened.
Bree made a gargling noise, and her mouth closed completely. She wasn't breathing at all.
"What's wrong with her?" The doctor muttered.
I scanned her with my bionic eye.
"Oh no. I know what's wrong with Bree!"
"What is it?" The doctor asked.
"She's having a seizure!!"
"What?"
Bree's arm started to bleed from where glass shattered previously, and I couldn't stand to watch. Like I said, blood and needles were two things I couldn't stand. And yet, here I was, in a hospital, facing those two very fears to the nth degree.
More nurses came rushing in, and I was shoved aside as they came in testing her, and trying to get her to start breathing again. Nothing was working. They wheeled her out of the room and down the halls to an operating room. Since we weren't authorized personnel, we were forced to wait outside Bree's room again. Only this time, she had a new room in the ICU. Two hours later, the gurnee came back towards us and wheeled back into the room. They hooked her up to an oxygen tank since she still wasn't breathing, and they had a blood pressure monitor, a heart monitor, and a vitals monitor all going at once. It made me scared. Bree was my big sister. How could she be like this?
Her leg was not in better shape. The doctor said that unless a miracle happened, she wouldn't be able to walk again. I couldn't believe it. This was just too much for me. The doctor told us to come back tomorrow, so we headed back to the academy.
When stepped out of the hydroloop, Spin greeted us.
"Hey, guys! How was the mission?"
"Not so good. Bree's in the hospital." I said. "Wait, why aren't you resting like Davenport told you to?"
"I did. You guys have been gone for a long time, you know that?" He asked, pointing at the clock. 11 30?
"Spin, why do you look so pale?" I asked. Oh no! Did he disobey us and give Katie more blood than he was supposed to?
"Pale? Me, pale? I dunno, but I'm fine." I saw sweat trickling down his neck, and I knew that something wasn't right with him.
"Are you feeling okay?" I asked. "Maybe you should sit down-"
But before we could help him sit down, he fainted.
"Spin!" Adam cried. He ran down towards his side, and shook him gently.
"Spin, wake up! Are you okay?" He didn't respond.
"His pulse is plummeting and he's not breathing either!" I picked him up and Adam carried him back to the infirmary where we found Mr. Davenport. He was taking care of Katie, who had returned to consciousness. We didn't need to ask any questions. We knew that if Katie was alive, Spin gave way too much blood. Mr. Davenport silently handed me the piece of paper that was in his hands.
Mr. Davenport,
I'm sorry. I don't want to disobey you, but I just had to do this for Katie. Bree, Adam, Chase, if I don't make it, don't worry. It's gonna be okay. Just know this: I love you all like a family. You gave me an incredible life. You gave me the best chance to live a good life, and I just want to say thanks for all you've done for me.
Sincerely,
Spin
I passed the note to Adam.
"We don't have the equipment here to save him." Mr. Davenport confessed. "We need to take him to the hospital."
I noticed a tear form on Adam's eye, and it fell off of his face. I couldn't believe this. First Bree, now Spin?
Adam grabbed Spin off of the stretcher and carried him to the hydroloop. When we finally got to the hospital, Adam took him to a room and gently placed him on a gurnee. A minute later, four doctors came in.
"What's wrong with him?" The first doctors asked.
"He's lost so much blood he's unconscious!" Mr. Davenport said as he wiped away a stream of tears.
"How much blood has he lost?" Another doctor asked.
"We don't know. Our friend Katie lost so much blood so Spin offered to give some of his to her only he gave so much of his blood to help her be okay that he's not okay." I choked back the tears.
"How long had you been away before you realized that this happened?"
"Three hours." Mr. Davenport told them.
The four doctors were assisted by four other nurses as they were trying to bring him back to consciousness. They were conducting tests on him and then they started putting blood back into him. I was scared. If you lose too much blood, you can die. I didn't want that for Spin! He was such an accomplished student.
About ten minutes into giving back Spin blood, he started coughing. He was conscious!
"Spin!" I shouted. I ran over to his side. "Are you okay?"
"Im really dizzy and everything is blurry." He replied. "Ugh, my head hurts!" He groaned.
"Spin, how many fingers am I holding up?" I asked as I held up two fingers in front of his face. He didn't reply. He started coughing again. Then he choked. Then before we knew it, he was coughing up blood.
"Dr. Bradshaw! What's wrong with Spin?" Adam cried.
"I don't know!" He replied. "He must be having a seizure from all that blood he lost. We can't let this continue! He's already lost too much blood, he can't lose any more!"
The doctors wheeled Spin out of the room and we were again forced to wait. Me and Adam left to go get Katie over to Mighty Med (surprise!! I'm including MM!!) to heal her injuries that Sebastian had caused.
*The next day*
Adam's POV
I woke up feeling renewed and fresh. I couldn't wait to start training.
But then, I remembered what had happened the day before and all the joy of a new day quickly disappeared.
I rushed over to the hospital, and I was dismissed by the Doctors. They said that I was of no use to them and I would do them a favor by leaving until they called us back. I decided to go to Mighty Med; at least I was appreciated there.
I was greeted by Kaz and Oliver.
"Hey Adam!" Kaz smiled. "Are you here to see Katie?"
I nodded, and they walked me down a few hallways where I saw a plaque on the wall.
Room 230
Patient
Gherkin, Katie
I made my way inside, and I saw Chase sitting next to Katie's hospital bed. He looked very tired with bags under his eyes and a red face from stained tears.
I sat down in the chair next to Chase.
"You really care about her, don't you?" I ask.
"Well, yeah" he replied. "We adopted Katie, and now, I failed her!" He cried.
"I know, but we can't change any of that right now. The important thing is to be strong for Katie."
He nodded, and I noticed he was tightly holding onto Katie's hand. I couldn't believe what I saw. Katie had a medical bracelet, bandages covered the majority of her right arm, and her left hand, still tightly gripping Chase's hand, was punctured with needles and bands that were testing blood pressure were tightly wrapped around her arm. She seemed unconscious for the most part. Every once and a while she'd move around, but nothing much would happen.
"Why don't you go home and get some rest." I suggested. "You look like you could use some sleep. I'll stay with her."
Chase nodded, and he hugged me before leaving Mighty Med.
The next day...
CHASE'S POV
Horace called me and told me that I should come to Mighty Med. I was hoping for good news. He said she woke up in the middle of the night and she wanted to see me.
I told Mr. Davenport that I was going to go to Mighty Med and then I left.
I walked the familiar hallways until I reached the open door. I took a deep breath.
Stay strong. You've got to be strong for Katie.
I walked into the room, and I saw Katie sitting up. She looked a lot better than yesterday.
"Hi, Katie" I smiled as I sat in the chair next to her hospital bed.
"Hi, Chase" she croaked. Her voice was quite shaky, but her smile made me forget. She was pretty even when she had an oxygen mask on.
"How are you feeling?" I asked as I reached for her hand. She smiled and held it tightly. It shocked me to feel her hand; it was very cold and lifeless feeling. Part of her bedsheets by her right should started to slip, and she gasped, quickly covering her shoulder with the blanket.
"Are you okay, Katie?" She quickly nodded, smiling.
"Yeah, I just came out of surgery, but I'm feeling fine. Dr. Horace said I should be back at the academy soon, if I can get my bionics back."
"What do you mean?"
"When you guys took my chip out, it stopped the virus from spreading, but the virus didn't leave the parts of my body that it had already started to affect."
"What are you saying?"
She didn't reply. Tears started to roll down her cheeks, and I knew something was wrong.
"We can get your bionics back, Katie. We recovered your chip and it's ready to go back in again! Your going to be fine, trust me. We'll fix it."
"That's not it, Chase. When you guys took my chip out, the virus was in my arm. It already did it's job. Then, when Sebastian turned on me, he damaged my arm even more."
I stared at her, trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle together.
"Sorry, Katie. I'm not sure I understand."
"Pull down the sheets, then you'll understand." She said, with a shaky voice. I noticed more tears.
"But, why-"
"Just do it!" She yelled. I grabbed the sheets and slowly pulled them down. I was in complete shock.
"Katie, how-"
"My arm was senseless! They had to amputate it!" She started crying harder and I did, too. I couldn't believe this!
"It's gonna be okay, Katie. It's gonna be okay! Calm down!" I told her. But she didn't. It seemed like she couldn't! She was having a panic attack!
"Katie, stay with me! I'm getting a doctor!"
But just then, the most horrific sound rang in my ears. A loud beeping noise, then the beeping became one, continuous buzz.
She was flatlining!!
