chapter 19.
the four girls went to the grounds as instructed by jihae's fellow school officers.
"our first activity, as stated in our program, is a scavenger hunt!" the school president announced as the students gathered, causing some cheers and groans. "you and your roommates are going to find the things listed on the map that will be given to you."
sooyoung stretched her neck and saw that there were some kind of flyers getting passed around. upon receiving four, she gave them to her team.
"you're only allowed to search the places visible on the map provided, and since you'll only be given three hours for this hunt, you can team up with another group of your choice!" the president says. "the more the merrier!"
"so, who are we teaming up with?" sooyoung asked, noticing that her group mates are facing the same way.
"i was thinking seonghwa's group? they're all physically fit." jihae replied, already looking for her boyfriend.
"just say it's because all your boyfriends are there." sooyoung grumbled which made the others giggle.
"ji!"
"byeol!"
loud and excited calls were heard from their left, making them turn their heads. they saw two guys waving furiously, speed walking towards them. the other two were awkwardly following behind.
"you don't have a group yet, right?" seonghwa questioned once he was near jihae who shook her head.
"we were just looking for you guys." she said. "well, now that we're all here, let's get started so that we can get this done soon."
"hi, sangie." byeol greeted as her boyfriend held her hand.
"you've been busy." the pink haired amusingly teased.
"a little bit." the girl chuckled.
sooyoung only scrunched her face at the couples surrounding her. she faced minjee to complain, but noticed her friend seemingly avoiding eye contact with jongho and the boy doing the same.
she wondered what happened between the two but her thoughts were interrupted by jihae's voice.
"we need to find eight things in three hours so i think it's best if we split up." she suggested. "i'm guessing there are two items each direction, so one pair can go north, another can go south, the same for east and west."
the others nodded in agreement. "so who's going to pair up?"
"obviously, picking my princess." seonghwa immediately answered, putting his arm around his partner, earning an elbow to his stomach.
"one more nickname and i'm pairing up with woo." jihae jokingly sneered.
a certain purple haired boy who has been quiet ever since he got there decided to ask his fuchsia haired friend since he was the only option. "wanna-" and he's with his girlfriend, of course.
he sighed as he looked around, already tired of this. should i pair up with choi?
"jee." jongho called.
nevermind. wooyoung immediately thought.
the shortest girl hesitated before turning to sooyoung. "sorry, soo. jongho hates new people. will you be okay with... him?"
the transferee bobbed her head in understanding. "yeah, i'll be fine. but make sure to tell me what's up with you two."
minjee only grinned and moved beside jongho.
"i guess that leaves- oh." jihae winced at the two people left.
"yikes."
"oof."
"this is fantastic." wooyoung rolled his eyes. "where are we going?"
his friends stared at him with a slightly guilty look before jihae gave a response. "w-well, me and hwa will find the slippers and brush. we'll go north."
they heard a chuckle from yeosang who seemed to lost in byeol's eyes, instantly changing his expression to stoic after feeling their eyes on him. "byeol and i will go east for the marble and bottle."
"can jjong and i find the ball and harmonica?" queried minjee to which everyone was fine with. "we'll take care of west."
"then, i guess we're going south." sooyoung said as she scanned through the map.
"yeah, this is definitely going south." the lilac haired mumbles.
jihae gave him a look that was implying, it's not to late to switch partners. he simply waved his hand, saying it was fine. the older exhaled sharply and decided to take his word for it.
the pairs separated, went to the direction they were supposed to be in and made an agreement to meet again an hour before the time is up.
it has only been three minutes since they started and sooyoung was already complaining. "why is it so hot? and why do we even need to do this? it's not like i'm going to school to end up in a forest. and really? a scavenger hunt? be original, people-"
wooyoung suddenly hushed her in an alerted manner, scanning their environment. "do you hear that?"
"what?" the girl grew a bit nervous.
"how good it sounds when you're not whining." the purple calmly said before he continued walking.
sooyoung groaned once more, getting more irritated with the other's teasing. "what are we supposed to find anyway?"
the boy flipped the map and read out, "a butterfly and a flag."
"good luck finding an insect." sooyoung snorted. "no way am i doing that."
"it says here we have to do some sort of task 'before retrieving an item'. let's just do that individually and avoid getting in each other's way." wooyoung rolls the piece of paper in his hand and marched to the first location.
"wait a second. we're not splitting up, are we?"
"i don't know. out of the two of us, you definitely know more about splitting up."
she should have seen that coming. "are you ever gonna get tired of rubbing that in my face?" she crossed her arms.
"just like how you got tired of me? nope."
"oh, my god." sooyoung exclaimed, causing a scoff that came with a smile from the boy.
they both know they're only kidding. there's some truth in it, but they're only kidding.
arriving at the first location, the two held out the map. "yeah, i think they're giving out butterflies here."
they walked towards a person who was wearing the staff's uniform and was holding some papers and a bag.
"excuse me, do you know where we can find some butterflies?" wooyoung asked.
the staff's face lit up. "for you to gain the butterflies you seek, you'll have to answer some questions we keep." she spoke with enthusiasm that wasn't really present in the pair.
"riddles, huh?" wooyoung raked his hair backwards. "okay."
the worker grinned. "the more you take, the more you leave behind. what are they?"
"footsteps." the lilac replied. he's heard of that one before.
the riddler seemed to be taken aback by how fast he answered but moved on, nonetheless. "next, what is it that, given one, you’ll have either two or none?"
"a choice." he responded almost immediately. "something i have been deprived of having." he say under his breath yet the girl he's with managed to catch that, squinting her eyes at him.
"lastly, what is so fragile that saying its name breaks it?"
"silence." he says before facing sooyoung. "you probably don't know what that is." that earned him a smack on the arm.
"congratulations, you have completed your task! now, it's my turn to give you what you ask." the staff turn around and opened the bag she was bringing. she took out something and handed it to them.
both students looked at it with confusion. "is that it?"
it was a pin. just a pin. a butterfly pin.
the adult sighed as she makes wooyoung take the object, feeling their judgement. "look kids, we're not that brutal."
the pair mumbled a 'thanks, i guess', and proceeded to the setting where the flag was most likely hidden.
"let's just get this over with." sooyoung whines. "you had it that easy, how much harder could getting a flag be?"
"you'll probably fail anyway." the boy remarks nonchalantly.
letting out another groan, she tuts her lips. "is it really hard to ask for a little encouragement from you?"
"you can encourage a clown to read but you can't send them to college." the lilac says, being done with his partner's complaints. "people have limits and you've obviously reached yours."
"i will choke you."
"kinda already suffocating with your presence." wooyoung shrugged, making it obvious it wasn't new.
before the girl could retaliate, it seemed like they already reached at the second and final location.
"oh, shit." sooyoung unconsciously curses as she saw the 'task' she was supposed to do.
unlike that pathetic butterfly wooyoung won, the flag wouldn't just be given to her. no, she had to work for it and get it herself.
rock climbing.
that was the messed up activity she had to do in order to retrieve something so ugly, sitting on top of the rock she had to climb.
her ex was right. there was no way she could do this.
