Chapter Nine: A Little Spark And Growing
"That's it over there?" Sebastian asked.
Grey looked down from the helicopter.
"Uh huh." She answered.
"Why would you want a busted it up old building?" Sebastian inquired.
"Told you this already, Sebbs. We take it over and make it our own." Grey retold.
Sebastian nodded.
"Wanna take a look see to get a better view of what you wanna do?" He questioned.
"That's too conspicuous. We need to sneak in after dark." Grey responded.
Sebastian sighed.
"What's with the hesitation to go in and take stuff? We wait, and wait, and wait, and it's annoying. Let's just go and bust the joint." He told her.
"And get busted while busting in? Yeah, that sounds way smarter than what I said." Grey sarcastically retorted.
Sebastian shook his head and smiled.
"Your one tough nut to crack, Kim. No wonder some people are afraid of ya." He stated.
Grey shrugged.
"That only helps me get what I want." She replied.
"Except with me." Sebastian pointed out.
"You never get scared when I'm mad." Grey said, agreeing with what he said.
"Why would I be scared of beauty?" Sebastian quizzed.
The former principal rolled her eyes.
"You've always been such a flirter." Grey stated.
Sebastian shrugged.
"I have my ways." He responded, now approving with what she said.
Grey kicked the back of his seat, making the helicopter pilot jolt forward quickly. He glanced back at her.
"Don't make me drop you from up here. I think we both know you've had enough of that." Sebastian threatened.
Grey raised an eyebrow.
"You would hurt me?" She questioned.
"Depends on what you do. Like that." Sebastian retorted.
Grey smiled.
"I always do that and I'm still here." She told him.
"Yeah, because I don't wanna watch you fall. If someone else did it, it'd be better." Sebastian joked.
"Have someone else try that and they'll be gone within an hour." Grey sharply spoke.
Sebastian rolled his eyes and grinned.
"Always such a violent girl." He commented.
"Who else could be better?" Grey queried.
Sebastian looked back at her and with a smirk, he shook his head. Grey used her hand to push his face back to the front. Both of their smiles grew as Sebbs continued to fly the machine.
*************
Speaking of machines, another one happened to be moving on land. This was the first time the team was using the new robot. It came with a few new modifications. The pilot no longer had a harness. The circle pad was still in the middle of the room, but this made it easier for the technopath to move around. The defense and weapons positions contained circle pads as well. The screens were placed in the front and back of them so they could choose what to do. As for the mechanic, he had to continue using the ladder to get up top. He finally had a seat though, including with being able to track damage within the robot without clicking buttons. The problem will automatically pop up and alert him. The whole set up changed for the most part, but wasn't too hard to work with.
"Woo! This is awesome!" Ryan yelled.
"Awesome?! Dude, this is epic. Hey, you think we could stop at Wawa for a second?" Spyder asked.
"Why would we bring a 180 foot robot to Wawa?" Harris questioned in return.
Spyder shrugged.
"I want a milkshake." He replied.
The young genius shook his head and smiled.
"Wait, what about flight mode?" Ryan quizzed.
"That's the only time you use the harness. Everything else is more flexible." Leo quickly explained.
The young freshman nodded.
"Hey Ry, you gotta a sec after this?" Mark asked.
His little brother glanced up at him.
"Why?" Ryan quizzed.
"Just wanna talk." Mark answered.
"Can't. Ooo! By the way, tell mom I'll be back by eleven." Ryan mentioned.
His older sibling leaned on the bars in front of him with his arms.
"Your grounded. Mom's not gonna let you go anywhere." Mark reminded him.
"I'm out right now." Ryan stated.
"Yeah cause I'm with you." Mark replied.
Ryan sighed, already over with the conversation.
"Just, let me go okay? How many times have you gone out and I never said a word?" He brought up.
The sixteen year old went silent.
"Exactly." Ryan said.
"This is different. You never tell me where you go." Mark responded.
His younger sibling shrugged, knowing he was going to lose this one.
"...fine. Then, don't bother me, alright? I'm gonna be upstairs all day." Ryan informed him.
He remained silent after that as he went back to controlling the new robot. The mechanic took a look at Leo, who returned it back. He kept glancing at the pilot, telling the sixteen year old to try again. The former jock shook his head and walked away. He went to go and check out the other data the 30 year old scientist installed. Leo sighed. He headed over to Harris's section. After a few more minutes went on, one of the members of the team spoke up.
"Yeah, this is cool and all, but where's my part in this? Hairbear's all healed, so what do I do?" Veracity inquired.
"You'll be the team's medical expert and fill in." Leo told her.
Veracity crossed her arms.
"So, I tend to everyone when their hurt and take their spots when they can't do it? Like, a nurse and a replacement?" She summarized.
Leo nodded.
"Basically." He said.
The young lady shook her head. Her feet made it to Spyder's section. The back of her body leaned up against the wall.
"Yeah okay, no. I want more than just some back up gig and someone who fixes boo boos. I'm not a weak little chick who watches men do all the work. Give me some satisfaction and put me to work. I have skills." Veracity refused.
Leo's eyebrows went up as he looked back at the female genius. Mark whistled a little. The fifteen year old pilot smirked a bit. Leo's attention quickly shifted back to the male genius, who nodded.
"Yup, that's my girl." Harris told him.
"Not that close." Veracity commented after.
"Right, got it." Harris agreed.
Leo shrugged.
"Ok, well you worked with me and Mark on the other robot's problems. Why don't you keep doing that? You know like, co-mechanic?" He suggested.
Veracity took a second to think it over. She nodded.
"That's more like it." She approved.
Spyder smiled. The tech controlling young man decided they had traveled out far enough. With the robot turning on its heels, the pilot made his way back to the base. The leaps were longer and higher without much effort. The weight of the robot wasn't as heavy. However, the link between it and the teenager piloting it felt off. In fact, it felt like something inside was changing.
The bond that connected the human to the machine was stronger. The power inside surge throughout both of them. It was one of those things the technopath couldn't describe. He knew that his abilities could be altered at times he was or wasn't aware. Most of the time, he was blindsided by them. Internally nonetheless, the effects were noticeable. You couldn't get past a vein without seeing what was adjusted. The revisions were unexplainably astounding, and the younger Walker brother knew better than to let this be hidden from his fellow teammates.
"Almost back. Hey, you guys up for some pizza?" Harris asked.
"Oh yeah! That's what's I'm talking about." Spyder reacted.
"Mmm, can't. I'm grounded, remember?" Ryan replied.
"No problem. We bring it over to your house. Besides, your mom never said you couldn't have friends over." Spyder answered back.
"True. Okay, we can be upstairs in my room." Ryan agreed to it.
Spyder grinned, expressing his excitement.
"Aww wait! I forgot I was supposed to be helping my dad at his job. His friend wants me to manage some files." Harris remembered.
"You work with your dad?" Mark asked.
"Yup. It looks good on college applications. Plus my dad's friend Brady isn't the brightest." Harris told him.
"Okay, well it's just you and me then dude." Spyder said.
Ryan nodded. That felt backwards to the young handy man. His little brother just said not to bother him, yet he let's his best friend in his room. Why is that? This convinced him that he had something to do with his sudden change in attitude. Question was, what did he do?
