CHAPTER ONE
(olympic coven)
In the year of 1918, Vivienne had a chance to reunite with Carlisle. It was during one of the bleakest periods in history, marked by the devastating spread of the Spanish influenza. Witnessing the birth of Carlisle's first child to join the coven, a moment that occurred amidst a backdrop of global tragedy and loss.
Vivienne and Carlisle had watched countless humans lose their lives to the deadly Spanish influenza. Despite the seemingly futile efforts, Vivienne stood by her mentor's side, doing her best to provide what little help she could. In the midst of this, a mother and her son fell ill, and in her final moments, the mother begged the pair, her voice desperate and sorrowful.
Elizabeth Masen's words echoed, her voice filled with desperation, "You must do everything in your power. What others cannot do, do it for my Edward," she whispered, her breath weakening with each passing second. Soon after, the mother drew her final breath, and Carlisle contemplated her words, mulling them over in his thoughts.
As Carlisle continued his role as a doctor, using his knowledge to save lives, Vivienne urged him to consider saving Edward. She was the last person he had transformed, and he had not changed anyone since, remaining committed to his guise as a mere human healer.
With Vivienne's persuasion, Carlisle, and she had taken Edward from the hospital to their shared abode, preparing to turn the young man into an immortal.
Once Edward had become an immortal, he quickly established a strong bond with Carlisle, seeing him in a fatherly light. Similarly, he regarded Vivienne as a younger sister, even though she was centuries older.
Within the family, Vivienne had also witnessed the transformation of Esme Anne Platt. The young woman, overwhelmed by the tragedy of losing her infant to lung fever, had turned to self-destructive actions as a means of grappling with her grief.
Carlisle had shared with Vivienne that he had once encountered Esme in Columbus, Ohio, during a time when she had broken her leg after falling from a tree. Reflecting on this coincidence, Vivienne mused that it seemed like fate, a sentiment Carlisle echoed, having considered the same after some pondering.
After Esme's transformation, it took time for her and Carlisle to fall in love, eventually leading to marriage. Esme had become the matriarch within the Olympic Coven, a trusted and beloved figure among them all.
In the year 1933, as the coven had established themselves in New York, Carlisle and Vivienne were out on errands when they stumbled upon a sight that would change their lives—a young injured woman named Rosalie Hale.
"You know," Vivienne said with a slurring voice, her gaze fixed on the human before her. Every detail was vividly clear to her immortal senses—the sweat trickling down his neck, his heart beating loudly, and the goosebumps rising on his skin. Unhurriedly, she reached out and touched his skin, savoring the fear emanating from him.
Vivienne's acute senses noticed every imperfection on the human—from the slightly askew jaw to the scars marring his skin. The scent filling her nostrils was intoxicating, a sweet and alluring fragrance—blood. It stirred envy within her, a reminder of her own mortality and the careless way in which this human treated the precious gift of life.
This human had made the fatal mistake of attacking a vulnerable woman who simply wanted to return home after a long evening. In Vivienne's mind, he was her prey, and she relished the thought of retribution.
The floor was stained by the actions of the other men who had taken advantage of the innocent human woman. Vivienne's anger flared at the sight, but she held back her powers, mindful of her need to control the extent of the damage.
Carlisle, the epitome of gentleness and grace, spoke to Vivienne gently. "Vivienne, dear, if you must feed, I would much appreciate it if you could take him elsewhere before I attend to this young woman," Carlisle's words carried a gentle request, his eyes soft with concern for the female victim. He looked every bit the model, despite his true nature hidden beneath his robes.
Vivienne glanced down at the innocent human, a mixture of pity and sympathy in her gaze. She knew that the poor soul was about to endure the same dark fate that befell her and Carlisle before, but she also recognized that they both deserved a second chance—a chance that had been violently snatched away by the corruptive influence of drunken men.
Vivienne nodded in agreement, firmly gripping the man by the throat. "I'll return once this man has received what he deserves," she assured Carlisle. The blonde male, while not condoning her actions, did not make any effort to intervene, understanding her need for retribution.
Although Vivienne didn't manage to locate the lead perpetrator responsible for the woman's suffering, she took satisfaction in exacting revenge on those she could find. She knew that if the woman did choose to undergo the transformation into an immortal, it would be her rightful place to seek her own vengeance.
And Rosalie exacted her revenge.
Shortly after, Emmet McCarty became the next addition to their lives. Rosalie had carried the grievously injured human over 20 miles to their home, arriving just in time for Carlisle to save him. The young man had been savagely attacked by a bear, his life hanging in the balance.
Emmet was the latest individual transformed by Carlisle, as the coven's numbers grew with the addition of Mary Alice Brandon and Jasper Whitlock years later.
Jasper, resembling Rosalie in many ways, adopted her surname to maintain the cover story that they were twins whenever they enrolled in schools.
But then, in the year 1980, Vivienne finally decided to leave the coven, acknowledging that it wasn't sustainable due to her unwillingness to follow the vegetarian diet that Carlisle, Esme, and the rest of the family had adopted. Additionally, she understood that her presence would be challenging for Jasper, who was still struggling to control his bloodlust towards humans.
Despite her efforts to wait a few days after feeding before returning home, Vivienne knew it was still a struggle for Jasper. Even though he insisted that he could manage, she could see the strain on him when she was around.
...
Rosalie gently took Vivienne's hands in her own, her gaze filled with concern. "You don't have to leave, Vivi," she said softly, her words echoing with a plea for her old friend to remain.
"Rose, it won't be forever, I promise you," Vivienne spoke softly, meeting the blonde's gaze and acknowledging the bond they had formed. It was only natural, given their shared past and the dark human fates they had endured, that their friendship had grown into something so close.
Rosalie's concern was evident as she asked, "You won't go into solitude, right? You won't just disappear without a trace, will you? You'll still keep in touch, won't you?"
Vivienne chuckled warmly at Rosalie's query, assuring her, "Solitude? Absolutely not! I won't be vanishing off the grid and going silent on you all! I promise I'll still be in contact."
Rosalie smiled warmly at Vivienne, acknowledging their unusual dynamic. Despite the fact that Vivienne was older, she held the role of the younger sister, frozen in the age of fifteen when she had been turned.
Edward entered the room as he declared to the females, "Vivi, no matter how much you think that, you'll always be the baby in the family."
Vivienne rolled her eyes playfully at Edward's comment, although deep down, she knew there was a grain of truth in it.
"I told you not to go into my head Edward!" Vivienne protested, her cheeks slightly flushed with embarrassment at being called the "baby" of the family. She then mused silently, considering Jasper as the true baby of the immortals, given his status as the youngest.
"Jasper would disagree," Edward smirked, amused by her reaction. Just as he said it, the rest of the family arrived to bid their farewells as Vivienne prepared to depart.
"I don't exactly fit the baby category in this family, Vivi," Jasper teased, unable to hold back a smile.
Vivienne huffed in playful annoyance before suggesting, "Then Alice?"
"Nope, still you," Alice answered, her eyes sparkling with laughter, confirming the consensus.
"Always?" Vivienne exclaimed dramatically.
Eliciting grins from the rest of the family as they all chimed in, "Always." She chuckled at their unison response and looked at them, making sure they knew she was serious. "If you guys need anything, make sure to come find me, alright?" She said, meeting each of their gazes intently.
Emmett sauntered over to Vivienne first and enveloped her in a tight hug, his muscular arms almost suffocating her. "We'll miss you, squirt!" he joked, prompting Rosalie and Alice to join in, trapping her in an embrace from which there was no escape.
As the three embraced Vivienne, she squirmed playfully, her efforts in vain against the combined strength of Emmett, Rosalie, and Alice. Despite her protestations, she secretly enjoyed the warmth and affection of their farewell embrace.
The Cullens were her family, but she knew she would never feel completely whole without her mate. Over the years, she had the chance to return to him, but the anger she harbored towards Amun made her apprehensive about what might happen if she did. For his own safety, she maintained her distance, though the longing to be with him was a constant ache in her heart.
Vivienne had remained largely in the dark about how her unique powers functioned. She had confided in only Carlisle, sharing the information with him, and reluctantly with Edward when he accidentally tapped into her thoughts as he struggled to control his mind-reading abilities.
Despite her limited understanding of her abilities, Vivienne recognized that her powers were fueled by anger and that they possessed the potential to drain the life force of anything. In a sense, she realized that she was venomous, harboring a dangerous power within her.
Hidden behind her stated reasons to leave the family was a deeper purpose—Vivienne yearned to understand the true nature and scope of her powers. Recognizing the dangers that her abilities posed, she believed it was necessary to distance herself from her loved ones to fully comprehend and control her powers.
Vivienne was venomous, embodying the darker aspects of life. Benjamin, on the other hand, represented the opposite spectrum—he was the epitome of innocence and benevolence. They were like two sides of a coin, with Vivienne representing the poison and Benjamin serving as the antidote.
