8. Age 19

So now that you're caught up how I got to this point, let's get to the point of shit hitting the fan. Shall we?

(Avenger's POV ~ two days after break in.)

"Have you figured out who that guy was yet?" Tony asks Natasha.

"Not yet, we've gone through a facial recognition sweep throughout the whole city," she sighs, "and still nothing."

"I found something," one of the agents says barging into the conference room.

"What?" All heads turn towards the man.

He hesitates for only a second before speaking again.

"They were breaking into medical records,"  he types into he computer.

"Why medical records?" Steve looks to Tony who just shrugs.

"It gets weirder," the agent says pulling up the hospital, "it was medical records for a hospital in Atlanta."

"Atlanta? Why Atlanta?" Natasha stares at the large screen.

"Wait," something comes to Tony, "that guy in red was talking to the other guy. He called him Eddy."

"Search for 'Edward'," Steve says quickly.

He man types in the name and sixty-three results pop up.

"Okay now let's see if any of these match our guy," Tony stares at the screen, scanning for a face.

"That one!" Natasha says suddenly.

"Edward Charles Allan Brock," Steve reads off, "but there's nothing on here that would make them want to break into it."

"What about family?" Natasha asks.

"He's got a daughter, Marley Elaina Brock," the agent says.

"Wait," Steve looks to Tony again, "is that the name the man in red shouted when you shot the girl?"

"Yeah it is," Tony looks back at the screen, "how old is she?"

"Nineteen today, sir."

"Fits the size," Natasha points out.

"Still doesn't explain why they broke in though," Tony looks at her.

"Yes it does," she point to he screen, "she's a mutant."

"Okay?" Tony looks t her confused.

"She's not registered," Natasha continues, "they were trying to change her records so they wouldn't have to register her."

Tony looks at the agent.

"Noting said here leaves this room," he says sternly.

"Yes, sir."

"We have to send them back to Atlanta," Steve says with a sigh.

"Absolutely not," Tony says.

"What?" Steve and Natasha look at him in shock.

"We're not sending them back."

"Why not?" Steve questions.

"Because I have a daughter, too, Capcicle. And I wouldn't want to register her like a dog either," he explains, "because of something she had no control over."

"But we can't just let them live here," Natasha counters, "once the government sees these, they'll come looking for them."

Tony messes with he computer.

"Sees what?"

The city of birth now reads 'Manhattan'.

"Tony," Steve steps closer, "you did not just do that."

"I think you'll find that I did actually," he grins, "and for extra safety incase the government has already seen the records; didn't the contract say that any mutants on the team were exempt from the registration since they already know they're safe?"

"You can't be serious."

"Oh dead serious," Tony nods, "you saw. We know she can fight. She sure kicked you ass for a bit there."

"Yeah fighting against us," Steve points out, "not with us."

"It was a family trying to protect each other."

"How do we know she'll even want to join?" Natasha asks.

"Easy," Tony perks up more, "to make sure her family is safe and that she doesn't have to enter the registration."

Steve and Natasha share a look.

"If this ends badly, I'm blaming you," Natasha says exiting the room.

"Guess that leave me to go extend the invitation to the new recruit," Tony smiles heading for the door.

"How are you gonna find her?" Steve asks still looking at the screen.

"It's her birthday," Tony calls back, "they're going to want to celebrate."

Steve continues to look at the screen before shaking his head with a sigh.

"This is gonna end badly."

(Marley's POV.)

"Happy birthday dear Marley!" Uncle Wade and Dad sing together, "happy birthday to you!"

"Did you really have to announce it to the whole bar?" I ask smiling with a beat red face.

"Yep," Wade throws his arm over my shoulders, "make a wish, kiddo."

I pause, looking at the lone candle on the small cake.

"I wish that by this time next year we didn't have to hide."

There's a silence before I blow out the candle.

"We'll figure it out Mars Bars," dad gives me a side hug while rubbing my shoulder, "we'll figure it out."

"Consider it figured."

Tony Stark slides into the seat across from us, a large smile on his face.

The three of us stare at his with wide eyes.

"Ya know you guys were actually kind of hard to find," he continues, "I looked in just about every bar here in the slums where I thought you guys might go to celebrate. Oh happy birthday by the way sweet heart."

"Don't call me that," my eyes narrow at him.

"Oh and here's my present," he slide a manila folder across the table.

"What's this?" Dad asks, grabbing the folder.

"Well it's Marley's present, so I think she should get a chance to open it," he continues to smile.

I take the folder from dad, open it, and take out the paper inside.

It's a birth certificate.
With my name on it.

Dad takes it from me.

"Why do you have this?" He looks at Tony angrily.

"Why don't you take a closer look at it?"

Dad looks at it for a minute and his face softens. He looks to Tony, back to the paper, to me, to the paper again, and finally back to Tony.

I take it back from him again.

"You did this?" Dad asks as I look for what he found.

"Yes, Mr. Brock I did."

I find the city of birth and tears bite at my eyes.
He changed it.

"Why would you change it?" Wade ask eyeing him.

"Because I have a daughter that I would to anything for, too."

I cover my mouth as I start to cry softly.

"Thank you," I sniff.

"You're welcome."

"I'm sorry about messing up your suit," I put the birth certificate away.

"All's forgiven," he waves it away, "but there is one small caveat."

Dad's eyes narrow again.

"There's no guarantee that the government didn't already see the records before I changed them," he looks from each of us, "so as a fail safe," he pauses, "I need you to join our team."

"What?" All of us say at once.

"We were given a contract stating that any mutants on the team, weren't required to register since they were already deemed safe," he quickly explains, "so if you join the team, they can't touch you."

"You do realize she's a Merc right?" Wade asks.

"Yes, and a very good one," Tony nods, "which is why it would be a quick adapt into the tower and we can say that you've been with us for longer and we've been training you."

"No," dad says, "no. I didn't want her being a mercenary, I didn't want her breaking into that tower. I draw the line at joining a team that's in constant threat of being sent to her death. So no."

"It's not your choice dad," I interject, "it's mine."
