Chapter 1
ZACHARY MILLER
"Time flies fast, doesn't it?" I ask, leaning over to Cassie. She scowls and looks away. I had that coming. I shrug and look up to see Stella's parents glaring at me. In between us is the main character—Stella Blue, lying unconscious on the hospital bed.
She was the happiest person anyone could know, but no one ever saw the thousands of knives that were stabbing her back. Today, she is at the hospital. Everything that led up to it is a mystery.
Everyone that Stella loves—or in my case, used to love-- was here. Cassie and Amy were her best friends. I found them annoying. Cassie always looked like she had just gotten out of a rummage sale and Amy always looked like she had woken up this morning in her castle to the birds singing and her twelve personal servants.
Her parents—Harry and Nellie were there too. They were alright. They loved me when I was dating Stella. They didn't give me a second glance now. I was offended. Was our relationship just that much? Was I someone that they liked just because I was dating their daughter? But then again, their daughter was in the hospital, so I didn't complain.
I was the ex-boyfriend. Naturally, I also had a few death glares sent my way every few minutes. I know that they thought that I had something to do with this. I wasn't about that, though. I was a player, sure, but I played with respect. I would never do something to hurt the girls that I dated.
I did have a bone to pick with her. I was angry after our breakup. That was not normal. I dated about two girls a month and me breaking up with them wasn't a big deal for me. Stella's case was different, but I would never try to hurt her.
For all I know, she would've drunk poison just to put me in this situation. The girl was an idiot, but everyone liked her or at least pretended to like her. I knew that everyone would talk shit behind her back. I was one of them and I am one of them. After our breakup, my anger took the best of me, and I let loose a few rumors to calm down.
I didn't feel this way about her before. I never hated her as much as I do now. I saw her at school one day and fell in love with her smile and goofy nature. I started talking to her and she would always find ways to keep me happy always. She was fun. She wanted a lot more than what the other girls wanted from me.
A few weeks passed and I finally asked her out on a date. She agreed and we went on our first date for a picnic at the park. I always took girls for a first date to the fancy restaurant in the city, but Stella insisted that she wanted something more personal. So, we decided to go pack our own food and go to the park for a picnic. It was not my style but, I decided I could work with it.
At the end of the date, I offered to walk her home. We had a nice log walk, holding hands. Her red dress flowed with the wind. Her green eyes sparkled in the dark and her wavy brown hair was swaying behind her as she walked—a few strands fluttering over her face every now and then. I watched as she tucked a strand of her caramel hair behind her ear.
"Careful dreamy eyes," she laughed. "Eyes on the path or you'll fall into a ditch."
I laughed and looked away.
"This is it," she said. We had stopped in front of her house. The pathway to the front door cut the garden. it was small house in the middle of so many other houses that looked just like it. The neighborhood was quiet and gloomy enough to give any grown person the chills at midnight, but I thought it wouldn't be best if mentioned it to Ally right after a perfectly good first date.
We said our goodbyes and she turned around to walk away. I just stood there for a while before calling her name.
She stopped in her tracks and turned around. I gazed into her eyes and tucked a tuft of her hair behind her ear.
I could see her eyes drowning in mine. She was in love. I closed my eyes and kissed her deeply before letting go.
She looked away and I could tell she was blushing even in the low light. She stood there for a few seconds, awkwardly. She turned away and ran back into the house leaving me on the pavement, wondering how long this was going to last before I dumped her. She was precious, but so was my time.
