18:The Mark of Time

How odd are the hours that pass, when you know they might be your last. Not in life, but on the soil in which you stand. Looking back at the time that made up the experiences that built you can sometimes be melancholic, but when all you see is pain, where do you stand to say goodbye? To whom do you wail your injustice to when all those who caused your pain are either gone or have no recollection of why there could be such rage and sadness to your face?

There isn't always a goodbye when there is a departure, but there is for some, a sense of relief. Sometime that which had become familiar can be imprisoning.

There weren't many people out and about, it must have been the chilly weather and rumbling sky. The wind lifted up the end of my cream colored scarf, I tucked it into my jacket. The park bench we were sat at was a slightly remote, enough so that only those who walked further in could find. Anyone else would have continued on even if they had spotted us three. There was nothing odd about a group of people sitting and drinking coffee on a cold afternoon at the park. There wasn't supposed to be anything odd about it.

"We look mega suspicious. These crap coffee cups aren't fooling anyone." Viper huffed petulant, shaking her cup without care as the steaming liquid spilled from out of the cup and over the tips of her fingers. She did not seem to even feel the heat.

"Maybe if you sat on the bench as a regular human would-" Venom hissed out, head up turned, annoyance radiating from every pore.

"Most humans don't use the word human when trying to blend in with other humans." She pointed out, sitting up from the laid position she had taken on the back of the bench. As if she had been idly laying on a bed with vast amount of space, instead of balancing her body on the thin iron that made the back of the bench.

How have they managed for so long? They were just so terribly, not human. I placed my own cup on my right knee, feeling the warmth seep through. A group of young adults were playing what looked like tag or something of the sorts. White belts with red tags hanging from their sides, dodging and weaving out reached arms every time someone tried to remove it from the belts they wore. Their joyous cries, the late time bird songs and chirps, the rustling of the trees made me close my eyes and just take it all in.

Was it because we were so close? Had regaining my will returned my sense of life? It almost felt as if I could take a moment to enjoy some semblance of life.

"I've heard of a few do so." Venom retorted. He sounded defensive. Viper tsked, I sighed opening my eyes as she slid down beside Venom and placed her long legs on his lap. He placed his hands on her ankles, placing his own cup on her thigh where it remained perfectly balanced. Terribly unhuman.

"Those are the weird ones." She pointed a finger at him. "Don't mimic anything from those."

"Oh," He stilled for a moment before slowly nodding, for a moment his shoulders dropped. "Now that you mention it, the context of their conversations always did confuse me a bit."

For whatever reason, his small confession made me want to smile, my checks already lifting as my eyes crinkled. I shook my head at the absurdity of them both.

"The man we are to meet-pardon me, werewolf, is not the god?" I questioned, at once he straightened up, turning to look at me.

He wore a white jacket similar to the one I wore, in white with a white beanie on his head. I had forgotten to ask what his new affiliation with white was. It did not look bad on him, but if it was to blend in better, than he was failing miserably. Already, the few women who had jogged by us had slowed when they had caught sight of his long out stretched legs. The sunglasses simply made him more mysterious. Viper was no better. In this cold weather, she wore a leather vest with a bare shoulder long sleeve wispy red top, velvet burnt orange pants graced her long legs with latex ankle boots with a triangle end. She had grinned when she had caught me eyeing her shoes more than once. They might have been extremely...pretty, in my opinion.

"No, he is his right hand man. The beta." His answer snapped me back into the present. I scanned around as if speaking of such a man might bring him forth.

"Hmm." I took a sip of my coffee, the tip of my tongue stung. "The wolves here are much more vocal and trusting on hierarchy, it seems."

"How are they back at your place?" Viper leaned around her brother, head tilted in curiosity as she twirled a lock of hair.

I squinted off at the distance, a flash of a blurry memory. Flesh and fur flying all over the place as another fight took place in a damp forest.

"Distrusting and not very keen on being on two legs." I answered honestly.

"I can understand that last one even if I do have a great pair." She lifted a leg, hand shooting out to grab the cup that had begun to tilt to the side. She lowered her leg and placed it down in what was no doubt the exact same spot it had originally been placed. I turned back to look at him, questions bubbling ever since he scheduled our next stop and meet.

"How did you go about meeting a god?" I blurted out.

"He had a grumpy day and happened to bump into the guy the one time I wasn't with him. Next thing I know, he's all chilled out." Viper was the one to respond first, leaning back into the arm of the bench. It had to be uncomfortable. She looked away for a moment, eyes narrowing, before looking back at me with a lazy grin.

"You just bumped into him?" I narrowed my eyes in disbelief. That sounded as plausible as winning the lottery on the first buy. Bumped into him and remained in contact enough so to ask favors?

"I smelled blood, followed and found him doing none human things. When I approached to see what species he belonged to, that seemed to have been the wrong thing to do because for the next seven days we fought." He spoke as casually as if it hadn't happened to him. I stared gaped mouth for what felt like the first time in my life.

"What?" I knew from the moment he mad muttered the word god that everything would be flipped on its head, but I certainly did not know, so would Venom. Or so had he been. Something began creeping on the back of my neck, not a chill, but an eerie feeling that over passed the shock that took the forefront focus on my mind. I knew this feeling from somewhere. I blinked, brow furrowing as I took my hands from out of my jacket, legs braced if I had to suddenly stand. This was an instinct, but I had little recollection to what it meant.

"Go on," Viper snickered, shoulders shaking as she laughed softly. "Tell her who won."

"My boss of course." A cheerfully masculine voice voiced. A once I jumped on my feet at the silent sudden appearance. "Can't win when the other guy keeps coming back to life, and each time he's just even more pissed than the first time."

It was hard focusing on the conversation as I took stock of the curly haired man with green eyes. He stood a few inches from us, broad shoulders and tall frame, hands clasped behind his back as he rocked back and forth on the heels of his feet. At once, I knew what I had failed to recollect. I had been so used to not being able to sense anyone other than Venom that i had nearly ignored when someone who was definitely not human neared. My heart was slow to beat in my chest as I became hyper aware of the existence of another creature in this version of me, adrenaline filling my body as I tensed and slowed my breathing.

"Very true. After the fourth time I ran, but he kept tracking me down." Venom was slow to stand as Viper removed her legs. He took a step forward, slightly in front of me as I collected my bearings. "We settled nicely and fought."

"You guys broke glaciers." The man spoke with a dry expression, lips pursing as he stared forward. I could almost feel it, the animalistic traits he kept hidden. If he turned to look my way, I would connect. I wasn't sure yet if I was mentally ready for that.

"He's a lot stronger than I had expected, especially when he channels his wolves. I genuinely did not think he could pick me up, much less throw me." In front of me, Venom crossed his arms over his chest and shrugged. The words that left his mouth painted a picture I could not fathom to understand. Someone had picked him up? And thrown him?

The green eyed man smiled something I could only label as polite, and turned to look at me. It always felt like a sudden wall of air hit me when anyone far from human made eye contact with me. It was resisting the urge to blink that caused me to narrow my eyes. I tried to tell myself I wasn't in any danger, not if Venom said he was to be trusted, tried not to go in the defensive. When I turned into those I locked eyed with, it was more than a mirror image. It was slipping into their essence and having the strength to pull away, all the while still wearing a piece of themselves as armor. A skin deep, soul touching armor. When I felt myself begin to sink, I dug the nails of my fingers into my palms. I really did not need to connect to a werewolf. They were very hands-on, and their habits were a pain to shake off.

"You must be the cause of such devotion, oh my look at that scrutiny, oh I do love being measured at first meetings." He grinned, teeth flashing widely in genuine amusement. He was very...something. I hadn't decided yet.

"Albericus." Venom said in way of introduction, he removed his sunglasses, hanging them from his collar.

"Venom, it's been a while." The man, Albericus, tipped his head. "Viper, inhuman as always."

"Not actually human." She waved from the bench.

"Very true." He chuckled and turned back to me.

"Mykela Debroughs." I introduced myself with a slight strain. It was difficult, trying not to slip into the wolf he carried within his would, but I figured it would be rude to do so when his god was doing us a favor.

"Well Ms.Debroughs, this is about to get a little odd, but my Alpha just wants to take a measure before bringing you along. You can think of me as the less frisky, less touchy, better looking TSA agent." He took a step in front of me, Venom stepped to the side. I tried not to look in his direction. I knew how he felt of me, and so I knew my weariness was my own as I eyed the werewolf.

"Ouuu," Viper suddenly sprang up and came up beside me, staring intensely at Albericus with an expression so intrigued, it alarmed me, even more so by what followed. "I've never actually gotten to see this."

I took a step back, this time truly untrusting. He smiled. It was unsettling.

"Mykela, he can be trusted." Venom said softly, turning to face me. I eyed him as well.

"By you?"

"By me."

"Do you recall the last conversation we had on trust?" I raised a brow. His lips twitched. I didn't know if he was repressing a smile or a frown.

"Two out of two probably wheren't there, mind sharing?" The man butted in with a hopeful voice.

"No." Venom hissed out without a backwards glance. Gold shimmered in his eyes as I tried to read the message he tried to send me.

"Figured." One of the two muttered lowly.

Thankfully, no one moved, which gave me a small sense of control over my body, perhaps they held still on purpose as to not overwhelm me. Either which, I appreciated the moment of stillness as I gazed at Venom. I weighed the pros and cons. Whatever this was, needed to happen. I was just delaying it.

"Fine." I snapped out and braced as I turned to look back at Albericus.

"Thank you for your cooperation and for picking Alberiucs airlines for-" He froze as his expression went slack for a moment before green eyes flashed silver.

All warm traces that made the man I had just met a few minutes before disappeared, before his face took on a colder appearance. It almost felt as if his very presence grew, his body straightening up further if possible as his arms dropped beside his sides. The very air grew cold, almost stifling, the sound of birds taking flight behind me rang out louder than usual. The silver which had taken over the whole of his eyes slowly began retracting into the pupil until what remained was a shocking shade of electric blue. It was not a wall of air when our eye met, instead it was as if I was plunged into the abyss.

Power.

I was growing in something I had not business touching. I knew that from my soul to the bottom of my toes. It was more than I could handle even if I wanted to. I could find no ending and no beginning, wherever I turned, a connection of some sort existed, threads of silver energy pulsing with their own life. With such bright threads allowing me sight, the hairs on my arms raised, heart palpitating as something within all this lurked. I did not know if it was man or monster. It was not like Venom, but it gave off the same natural perturbance I had carried with me at the feel of any creature beyond my will or power to fight. It was more than the unease of knowing something beyond human lurked around, more than feeling the eyes of monster scan every inch of me, and far more than being drowned in a glimpse of such power. It was being submerged in such a creature and not knowing what it was.

The blood in my body buzzed as it searched for the wolf it felt, but the soul my own brushed upon was a shadow of something more. My body was shaking, that I knew, but the sensation of fullness, be what filled me power or more, was too much. I could implode with the bizarre and numbing feeling that coursed through me. It was almost as if something wanted out, but there was nothing to respond to. The fangs and claws were there, so was the fur, but as animalistic as it was, it was much more. Something massive brushed upon my back, sharp points scrapping along my back as it passed me. I turned but caught sight of nothing, and yet already there, behind my back and hovering above me, I could feel the heat of something immense standing there. I did not move. It did not move either. Slowly, my eyes glanced to my right bottom, and then straight forward again.

Like a wolf, but not a wolfs paws. Bigger, sharper. I swallowed. The creature began to crouch even lower around me, my head dropped and my shoulders came up around me, my hands lifting into trembling fists. It had been a long time since I had ever felt such overwhelming fear take place in my being. I was not a person who feared easily, I could not afford to be.

"Do you always enter uninvited into someone's home?"

Something animistic spoke above me in a mans voice, a wild undertone to each of this words. It was difficult processing the words spoken as my mind tried to put together the knowledge that this beast was speaking. I opened my mouth, but found my voice buried deep within the point of my stomach, I could not force it, not air to come forth. It was the voice of man, and yet not.

"No answer, hm."

I found myself frozen, facing a void of darkness, brightened by thousands of bright strands that pulsed like flickering flames. Behind me, it moved closer and horror clawed at my throat as above me, I caught sight of something that by far, resembling the snout of a wolf, leaned over me, mouth opening as large sharp teeth peaked out. Hot air fanned out as it breathed behind me. Everything within me chilled, finger tips trembling beside me, the cold freezing my knees in the position I stood, perhaps that and will alone kept me standing in the oddity of a creature. This was not a werewolf. This was-

"Word of advice, witchling," Something lifted, I only managed to catch sight of grotesque looking fingers, dark and sharp, covered in fur, lowering over my face until I saw nothing."close your eyes."

It was the wall of cold behind my back that let me know I was staring into Venom's fingers, his hand placed above my face as I took in a loud breath of air that rasped down my throat roughly. I closed my eyes for a moment as the sensation of being back into my own body caught up to my mind, a sudden draining of power I could not hold leaving me. It was like an untangling of limbs that did not belong to me, heavy and vicious as they pulled away. It was nothing I had ever felt, and something I never wanted to experience again.

"I'm sorry, I should have seen that coming." Came the apologetic voice behind me, remorse clear as day.

"Did we just have a threes-" ALbericus, I think, cut himself off with an obviously forced cough.   "My Alpha requests you to follow me to our gathering point." He spoke in a business like voice.

As much as inhaled, I felt a light announce, like smoke, filling my mind. Not quite a headache, but enough to be bothersome. It had been a while since I had one. Something cool touched my forehead, making me jerk upward. I had begun to lean into Venom's hand without noticing.

"What's it like when he takes over?" Viper questioned nonchalantly.

"Dark." Came the blunt reply.

"Hmmm."

"Are you alright?" I opened my eyes and turned half way to face him. He pulled his hand back to his sides, staring down at me with a frown. The tips of his hair, lightened by the setting sun behind his back, looked transparent, casting an odd outline that made him stand out all the more as he gazed back, gold the biggest contrast before me.

"Yes." No. Eyes narrowing, he remained vigilant. I turned back around to face the werewolf. This time ignoring the sensation of diving was much easier.

"I suppose if I asked what your Alpha was, you wouldn't tell me." At my statement, his polite smile turned truly wolfish, gaze sharpening into something I recognized as a welcomed warning.

I tucked my hands into my pockets, hands balling up as I recalled the sensation of that creature standing near by. Somehow Venom's presence behind me was slightly comforting.

"Of course not, but it's public knowledge he holds an official god title." His tone was still friendly, but I would get nothing from him in regards to what he was protecting. At least not from him. We stared at each other for a moment, taking the other in before I nodded offhandedly. It was none of my business anyway. Viper snorted. "Now then, shall we get going."

"Are we headed to your little paradise?" Viper asked. Paradise? Since we were dealing with a god of some sort, was I supposed to be factoring in heaven? I glanced up for a moment. That thing was more hellish than anything. Besides, I doubt I'd be granted entry. Wasn't too sure about any of the other's here either. For a moment, amusement stirred in my chest as I chuckled. Venom shuffled behind me.

"No offense, but she holds the title Hunter to her name, and werewolves don't tend to behave well to that word." He shrugged apologetically as he gave me a small hand.

"I haven't hunted anything in a while." I clarified. And I would not start on the wolves protected by such a being. I was many things, but I liked to believe that idiotic was not one of them.

"And now would be a terrible time to start." He hinted not too discreetly. Somehow his words didn't offend me, I had the odd sense that I was being poked. As if he were trying to see something. A reaction perhaps? Confusion filled my ever growing list of questions that might never receive an answer. I let out a soft sigh.

Albericus set a swift pace as we treaded out of the park. He was friendly to everyone that he passed, nodding and smiling widely. Some people would smile back, others ignored him. No reaction truly seemed to sway him. Viper walked behind Venom and I, taking her time to follow along. Every time I looked over my shoulder, some naive human was making faces at her with glittering and enchanted eyes.

"Is this really going to be your last day here if we reach the door?" Albercus had asked quietly after some time. His tone wasn't as jovial as usual, immediately I knew he wasn't asking me.

"Yes."

"Don't say it all calmly like that. We should have thrown you a party or something." He grumbled. "Can't say I'm happy to see you go. You've been a part of the pack for a while."

"I appreciate the sentiment."

It was normal, and yet not to know that Venom had interacted with other creatures enough to be missed. My thought sounded jaded, I realized, but it was simply a shock to see others get along with him. Wolves and god, and who knows who and what else. A sudden wind passed, shirring the fallen leaves and scattering them about. I watched one in particular and couldn't help but think there was something lonely about it simply floating about which ever way the wind blew.

"Direct as always." He shook his head side to side in front of us, brown curls shaking as he did so before he peeked over his shoulder with wide green eyes filled with excitement. "How about you? Don't you feel like doing one last big-" His expression fell as I blinked.  He turned back around. "Tough crowd."

He was quick to give us the next coordinates, he made a 'call me' motion with his hand, winked and walked around the corner. As the three of us made our way back to the car, I glanced at Venom.

"That's the gods right hand man?"

"He's fairly good at keeping order and peace." He paused for a moment, he raised his hand, suddenly hiding the lower half of his face as he turned to look away. "I must admit that the wolves have been very helpful in learning about family and the different roles one might find themselves embracing."

My brows furrowed. Alright.

Viper drove for this trip, alarmingly fast if one was afraid of death and recklessly if one did not want to get pulled over. Venom sat beside me with his long legs stretched as far as the car allowed him. Sometimes I did feel bad for the constructions in which they found themselves.

I closed my eyes and focused on y breathing, lowering the window on my side a bit. There was a slight pulsing behind my eyes, a pang of discomfort. There was as much silence as being in the car with two predators in front and beside me allowed. Somehow I managed to fall sleep.

Be it that I knew that at the end of this destination, a difficult journey would start once again, the ending final this time, or that my mind was a whirlwind with questions and memories, but I found no comfort in my dreams.

Bam

Bam

Bam

Bam

There was a steady sound coming from all around me. The cold and damp grass beneath my bare feet brought chills to my joints. Holding my hands out in front of me, I realized I was clothed in a long sleeve white chamise dress that ended midway of my calves. My hair hung free on my shoulders rather than its usual braided back style. I spun around, spotting the randomly spaced large rocks that surrounded me. I stood in the middle of some sort of grass field, trees far from where I stood. Squinting my eyes, I made out two heavy pillars covered in green and dried branches that intertwine around them. I turned to look around, but found nothing more.

My fingers clung to the dress, bunching it up as my thighs as I took a cautious step forward, my foot sliding on the cold grass. It stung. There was an eeriness to this place, fog rising from the ground from afar. There was no moon in the sky to offer a hint of light, no stars to tell me where I stood. There was nothing within the blue ink sky. The thumping sound continued on without pause. To my ears, it sounded like a drum. Wherever it was, every time it sounded off, I could feel the vibration from my feet up.

Inching my way over to the pillars by the time I stood before, then I turned to look behind me, unsure of what to do. The fog was more than half way across the patch of ground now, tendrils reaching out and moving side to side like snakes. Unease made me take a step back, something flickered bright and scorching hot behind me. I turned and was blinded by a flames of white and silver when a stinging sensation made me take a sharp breath to find something bursting forth from my mouth, warm and wet it spilled from my lips in gushes. Eyes wide open, I could see nothing but bright white.

Something cool wrapped around my ankle and yanked. I went down in a moment, slamming into the ground, and felt the wet ground I had been standing on moments ago begin to rush underneath me as I was dragged back. Blind, I reached out in clawing motions to grasp at the grass that slipped through my fingers, stands breaking off. I clawed and dug my nails into the earth as the edges of my vision began to darken. Then the ground beneath me dissapea4ed as I landed in a tangle of limbs into a whole. I reached up, stumbling into a standing position as I reached around, dirt slipping through my fingers and onto my face as I felt along the walls. I opened my mouth to scream when dirt fell onto my face, ash touched my tongue. I began to spit it out, but more began to fall, landing like heavy blows from above. My chest lifted rapidly as it began to fill the hole, already up to my ankles. It felt as if the ground was filling from the ground far faster than it was falling from above. I pulled my feet upward, clammy hands reaching around me to feel for something as I began to jump around.

I still could not see anything, my sight a mixture of white dots that went in and out as the blackness was blurred away from anything that could be called a shape. My chest throbbed, warmth seemingly spilling from me. For a moment, I touched my stomach and looked down. I did not need good sight to see the contest between red and white. I raised my hand above me, squinting above as I tried to see what was pushing the dirt in, but saw nothing.

My chest felt tight, my limbs warm as sweat trailed the dress, sticking to me. Something that wasn't blood or screams began bubbling in me as I turned in every direction and tried to climb out. Long fingers trailed up my arm before clamping onto my shoulder. I whirled around and-

*                                *                                    *                                            *

Golden eyes stared down at me, no black eyes with a golden rim around them that shimmered. Although my mind was fast to take in our positions, his hand on my shoulder, how close his face was to my own, the way his lips parted as he spoke something, probably my name, all I could focus on was the dark abyss within his eyes. I was faintly aware of the ragged sounds, something struggling within the car to breathe. The logical part of my mind knew it was me, the part still frightened to be buried alive was clawing at the car seat beneath me. My limbs were frozen still, so much so that holding the position I was in strained the muscles in my neck. Something was trapped within my chest, choking me.  He began to shake me roughly.

"Breathe!" He hissed out in a voice far from the one I usually heard.

It was startling enough that my gasp came naturally, but then I shot forward and curled inwards as I began to cough, air rasping down my throat painfully, causing me to wince in discomfort. I huffed staring at the car floor as my body followed my mind and began to calm.

"Mykela." I did not want to turn to look at him. There was no emotion in his tone as he said my name, but at once I felt as if my entire being chilled. I knew he wasn't threatening me, but sound and instincts were difficult to ignore. "What happened?"

I closed my eyes for a moment before leaning back. We were still driving, somewhere vacant and off road. The god's right hand man was still driving, but Viper's eyes were focused full force on the rear view mirror. She wasn't blinking. I looked away. Smoke no longer clouded my mind, but there was an ache, above my stomach. I knew what that meant, but I did not know why it was happening so soon. I had less than two weeks of being awakened, so why...

I grabbed at the zipper of my jacket and brought it below my chest, before grabbing the collar of my shirt and pulling it down. Viper's hiss sounded off in the car at the sight of the scar, the size of my palm that now decorated my chest. It appeared a year old, the skin pulled tight around the long line that took up space close to the center of my chest. It was sore, but not enough to be bothersome. Yet. This was as good as it would get before it started killing me again. Unless something else killed me...again. I huffed out, for some perverse reason, wanting to laugh as the corners of my eyes stung for a bit.

I glanced over at Venom and lost any amusement I had. He was turned to face me, the right side of his face was obscured by night as it stretched across his face, almost shadowing the enraged expression that he wore. I raised my shirt and closed the jacket, but his eyes didn't so much as flicker from the spot they were glued too.

"Venom-" I started off cautiously. His pupils dilated for a moment before his mouth opened inhumanly wide, silver scales appearing at the corners of his mouth where normal human skill would have torn had anyone ever attempted to open as wide as he had. And then he let out a sound that was neither a cry, not a shout a human would make.

Not the wail of a wounded animal or the sound of a predator giving a warning. The sound hit my chest, as a droplet in calm waters rattled me like a boat out at sea during a terrible night. Whatever it was was silent to my ears, but I felt it. I saw it as the car windows began to tremble and shake violently until they shattered. I watched as the sound forced itself from out of the car and into the world. It traveled fast for in seconds, animals from affair were crying out, alarmed and frightened as birds took flight and shuffled about unsure in which direction to head to. The sound of the car ahead of us slamming the brakes was the loudest thing for a moment before Viper too forced the car to a stop. It was the utter stillness in which he held himself that distressed me, the animalistic expression was the only indicator to his state. He shut his mouth with a snap and that was it. No other movement, all the while the wild expression reigned over his features.

It may have been instincts, or what I simply knew of the time I had spent with Venom, but in this moment I knew I could not move if I did not want to set off something I would not be able to suppress. I had the distinctive notion that he was holding onto an exceedingly thin line of rationality, and if I were to move in any way, he would take me into his arms in a hold that very well, might just kill me. He wanted to protect me, he always had shown and expressed this to me, but here was the very thing that he could never fight against.

The mark that told anyone who knew how to read it, that my days were counted.
