17: Huntress

The powerful know how to change the world, but the powerless know how to set it ablaze. Those trapped in between learn how to survive.

I have had years of experience teach me various things about humans, but seeing and understanding aren't enough at times. When Harper came to me with a panicked expression on her face, I did not comprehend what could have happened. I had not sensed any danger within the house, and I knew Mykela was safe.

I hadn't expected to be told she had entered a deep meditation, even less so to see that it was much more than that. Diving deep into the bond, I knew the moment I could not sense her that what made her very being was not present.

"She's delved within herself," I whispered taken aback. She never once has done this. Or at least not to my knowledge.

"What does that mean?" Harper asked beside me, some part of her repeated a motion, a bouncing I believe. My focus was solely on Mykela, so I did not look over to check to see which limb or extremity it was.

"If your power allows you to see everything a person is from their very soul, then her power allows her to tread through their very being. She is within the deepest part of herself." I explained carefully, not completely sure of it myself. Mykela was always very vague on how exactly her power worked whenever asked, but from what I could grasp and experience it was something perhaps more complex than even I could summarize.

Human powers were always complex compared to brute strength, and what animals and monsters morphed into when the unknown world of mystery was involved.

"I'm going to take a guess and say that trying to pull her out will be a terrible idea." Stained, her words were slow-spoken. I said nothing.

"And no, we wait." I nodded and crossed my arms over my chest and waited. As I always have done.

I was far better at waiting for Mykela than the human, I had the experience. Minutes turned into hours. I hadn't moved from my ridged position across the room from her, Harper on the other hand, went from pacing to sitting and standing various times. She was sitting at the moment. During all of this, I kept my eyes trained on Mykela.

Her breathing was steady, not her soft and quiet sleeping rhythm, so it was impossible to think of her as simply sleeping sitting up. Not once had she twitched or rocked. Hands-on her crossed legs, her back remained straight. Humans weren't necessarily enchanting, they didn't have glimmering scales or even vibrant colored eyes that reflected colors beyond their understanding, but after spending time looking through their eyes, I could make out the appeal when looking at her. It was more than the shell of flesh that she carried, it was how she carried it. It was her.

Mykela Debrouhs. What are you doing? It was beyond my understanding, but having her before me but not know what she was doing stirred what felt like a maddening urge to do something, get closer, delve deep into our bond, and dig if need be to follow her. The thought of it made alarming sensations in me flutter. Sharper than humanly possible fingertips pressed against my rib cage, momentarily distracting me from my train of thought. While a bit alarming, I knew she would come out of whatever it was that she was doing.

My biggest concern was how she would come out? Would she be as she was? Was it too soon to appear before her? But I could not disappear from her sight until I knew she was back. I was glad that for all her pacing, Harper did not react rashly, I was not sure how I would have calmed her down, and Viper was far better at dealing with human females than I was.

Outside the sun peaked at its highest point, heatwaves I hadn't felt in a very long time slowly crept into the room subtlety, warming the air as the birds and critters outside went on, but avoided the house. A deep breath.

I had to hold myself back from pouncing forward, as she finally did something different. Then as if she hadn't trapped me with her silence, she opened her eyes, glancing at me casually with a calmness that unnerved me. It did so because it was true calmness. Mykela had never been calm. For all her silence and subdued behavior, there was always a grim and or silent hostile edge to her words. Scanning her for a clue, I wished to ask her-

"Where is Viper?" She inquired surprisingly.

"She should be around here," I said slowly, eyes narrowing at her. What was this calmness? What did it mean? She hadn't asked me to leave her space yet. I took that as a positive sign.

"What did you do?" Harper rasped out beside me as Mykela stood up gracefully. Her reeling tone had my eyes flash over to scan her gape-mouthed expression and back to Mykela.

I dived into the bond at once, her door was still firmly shut, but as I felt her presence on the other side, it worked as comfort for once. Daring to edge closer, I placed a hand on the door and opened my senses. She halted on her way to the door, turning to look over her shoulder, her eyes narrowed on me. Lips half pursed as one side slightly curled up, her nose scrunched up. There was no fear in her eyes, dark eyes, if anything, I would have to label it as perturbed? Annoyance? Both?

Hmm. My mind raced as I tried to place the expression on her- all, thoughts disappeared as I realized I had never seen such an expressive emotion come across her face. The revelation stumped me so much that I found myself rooted to the very spot as if I were a great tree with its roots buried and intertwined within the flooring in this house. With all of my inhuman senses and I heard not one word that left her lips as she commented something and quickly left. Besides me, there was a flurry of movement, and then Harper was gone as well. I stared at the door with wide eyes.

Sounds and motion were nonexistent for a moment before I made my way out slowly, slower than human pace, as I shut the door behind me softly and followed the scents of the two witches in the house. One who was not recognizable to me. Like always, they were outside.

Viper lounged within the pool without a floating device, sitting on top of the water surface as if she were on firm ground, fingertips lazily splashing about. Her long black silken robe swished about, soaked as it cast an interesting shape beneath her form. Mykela stood at the edge of the pool with her hands clasped behind her, Harper a few steps away looking back and forth between the two. I was as invisible as the critters that lived underground for all the attention I received when I reached the pool. Moving off to the side, I stood where I would have a good look at everyone's faces.

"Spare with me." These words made me hiss involuntarily, further proof that something was different if I ever asked for it.

"Venom is right there." My sister said without a look, large sunglasses covering her face as she tilted her head further back, long locks in a loosely tied bun on top of her head. She crossed her legs, foot bouncing. I knew from that alone that she wasn't going to deny the request for long.

"I wish to practice with you. I also know you've always wanted a match." The easily elusive witch remarked truthfully.

"We had one last time. You're an evader when it comes to me."

"I was. I was also unable to tap into my gift."

"Oh?" At those words, both Viper and I turned to look at her. There was no change. She was not one to speak falsity.

"Holy shit." The grin that spread across my sister's face made something trickle down the back of my neck. Could I form sweat? It certainly felt so.

"Mykela"- I tried.

"I've always been too aware of you. I can not practice with you."

"Viper"-

"She's a big girl." Waiving me off with a hand, she stood up just as she slipped the robe and let it sink in the pool. Removing her shades, she placed them atop of her head. "For how long?"

"All I need are three rounds." Taking a step back, Mykela got away from the pool as Viper walked out as well.

"Why three?" Harper questioned, starting to move closer to me for some reason. Humans tend to avoid me, but it could be that in this situation she thought me to be the safest option for safety.

"In order to get back to where I was before."

"How do you know three is all you're going to need?" Vipers amusement curled her words in what could be misunderstood as a scathing skepticism.

"Because I said so." Came her blunt response.

"Oh, I live for this confidence Huntress. What do I get if you fail?" Both paused a few spaces away from each other, looking down I noted neither wore shoes. Putting my hands in my pockets, I lowered myself to the ground in a crouch. Harper did the same in a much more sack dropping to the ground type of maneuver.

"Why are we on the ground?"

"Debris and dirt." Was all I replied with.

"That's strong, huh." She muttered, grabbing her glasses, she gave them a quick clean. I looked at her glasses for a moment before turning back. Human eyesight was pitiful at times.

"Besides my humiliation and to fight me? What else would you want?" Raising her arms above her, Mykela began to stretch, her wrist made a sound.

"How do you wish to play, Huntress?" Viper hissed, this time very much so with purposeful malice. There was a slight silence beside me before a quick succession of jumps from the human's heart. Mykela ran her eyes over Vipers relaxed stance, to her black latex shorts and matching bikini top.

"The first to restrict the movement of the other wins."

I rarely used human curse words, but at that moment as Viper's black eyes gleamed and expanded, losing the human facade as her face sharpened and black scales rose around the edge of her eyes and trailed down her neck, it slipped out. Startled sounds came out from the birds within the trees and sky, animals taking off in petrified screeches.

"Shit."

I had my own style of going about things and fighting, but I detested going against Viper even in a casual fight. She was just as fast as I was without forcing myself to my best potential, but there was one thing she had that would put any foe at a disadvantage. Strength. Rather than immense strength thrown around during a brawl that would end in beating the other to the ground, she excelled in using it in an unnerving way.

Once she closed her hands around you, you were as good as dead for the death grip that she used. Nothing could escape from her without her permission. I was sure neither had ever sparred each other seriously, and I knew I had never let it be known to Mykela. Were her instincts that sharp? There was no possible way she purposely gave Viper an advantage in a fight, when simply fighting would be something she would look forward to. I studied Mykela.

"You heard her brother, all damage is on her." Viper crouched, arms extended at her sides as her fingers spread out, and then curled in slightly, hooks more so than claws.

"And all damage is on you." Mykela took in a breath, slid her right foot back, and raised her hands to her face, covering her eyes. At once, Viper rushed at her.

Every step Viper took forward, every millisecond Mykela remained unmoving made, pressure build within me as I struggled to place myself between the two. It was as if every sensation I had was on high alert.

Viper was less than four more steps from reaching out when Mykela dropped her hand and opened her eyes. One step, their eyes meet.

I watched as her circular pupils dropped vertically and expanded while pitch-black ink-soaked her eyes until they were an exact replica of Vipers. Black scales grew over her face, covering a lot more than my sister currently had.  At once, Viper came to a stop to jarringly, the grass beneath her broke apart as she dug her feet in. No one moved. I doubt anyone would have been able to. For years, she had only flashed my very own golden eyes, not a hint of a scale outline to be seen anywhere.

"How unnerving." Viper hissed, eyes reverting back to normal, and she snapped out of her previously excited state. I could understand why.

We had sensed no change from the still Huntress. Even now, she held still, and yet our senses were telling us that there was only one human around us. And that was the trembling witch beside me.

"I could say the same." Mykela's voice could have been an exact copy of Vipers or even my own. I leaned forward, focusing on the sound, I tilted my head as if to catch the sound better.

Viper and Mykela eyed each other, neither circling, but the longer they stared, the more charged the air around them became, a silent clash of power until finally, they both charged at each other. At once, as someone who had often practiced with Mykela, I could see that she wasn't fighting like herself, but rather in Vipers style.

They stood arm's length close, but neither sung widely to strike at the other as hands flashed around each other's body, dodging and tilting away from hook-like hands. Each trying to grab onto the other. Mykela reached out, Viper smacked her hand away, the other struck forward and missed in a breath with the simple tilt of an inch. Hisses and snapping sounded off louder than the quick thuds or whip-like sounds their movements made. And then it was over.

Viper struck out with her left hand, making her slap her hand away, arms crossing over her chest. At once, my sister took hold of Mykela's bicep, spun her around, and pulled her in, back to chest. Hand sliding down the length of Mykela's arm, she forcefully interwove their fingers together before jerking her hand to her shoulder. Putting her in a chokehold, and began to tighten her arm. Mykela didn't struggle as my sister's hold forced her body to arch away.

"One." Viper hissed with glee and released her.

Mykela took two steps away and stretched out her neck, a hand coming up to rub at her nape. Her hands opened and closed as she peered down at them with an inquisitive expression.

"Had it always-" She cut herself off, lighting a fire of curiosity within me. "Again."

"There's no stuff flying around," Harper whispered beside me as if her words would gain the attention of the two.

"There was no other choice." Cackling Viper suddenly launched something in my direction, plucking them from the air I noted her sunglasses and placed them on top of my head. Just as before they stood before the other.

Both struck out as before, each trying to grab hold of the other when what sounded like a collision sounded off. The grin that came over my face was uncontrollable as I took note of their stance. Both held each other's hands, fingers locked, as they stared each other down in anything but kindness. One of the two pushed, perhaps two, for a moment there was a power struggle as each pushed against the other, the earth under them fell apart and dented as one was pushed before the other took a step and pushed back.

I was both genuinely surprised and impressed. Mykela was holding her own against Viper with an eerie-like calmness while my sister...

"Like hell." Viper snapped, eyes flaring black. Leaping into the sky, she twirled above Mykela without breaking their hold. The jump over began forcing Mykela to bend her back just as Viper landed, but at once the quick huntress spun, returning to the position they had been in seconds before.

Mykela yanked her right arm all of a sudden, jolting Viper close, but just as Viper was about to steady herself, Mykela threw her head back. Predicting the head-but Viper moved her face away, but that was precisely what Mykela seemed to have expected as she continued forward, slamming her forehead into Viper's chest and then upward, momentarily causing Viper to choke. Her eyes went wide and then flashed down all in the same moment it took for that move to be completed. She looked over at me with a surprised look before glaring down.

Ah. Viper fell backward with her back straightened out, but before one of her locks could graze the grass, they were tumbling and struggling on the ground. Neither let go of the hands of the other. Bringing my hand up to my chin, I pondered as I watched them grapple for a win.

If Mykela was in fact, as she no doubts was, tapping into Vipers own power, then rather than a battle of strength, it was a battle of wit. Viper should have had the upper hand, with this being her own strength against her, but very rarely did she fight anyone. While on the other hand, Mykela would have to fight while simultaneously learn the possibilities within Viper's instincts and power. But this was not her first time doing something of this caliber.

Viper tried to entangle Mykela with her own legs, but that proved to be a fatal flaw as her knees hit the ground and Mykela straddled her, forcing my sister backward without being able to buck up.
I watched as sweat began to form on Mykela's brow as slowly, with shaking arms, she forced Viper's arms up inch by inch until she had them pinned to the ground. The position was strange, but so were the circumstances.

"You're so damn annoying."

"Two." I counted as Mykela jumped back. Viper rolled on the ground, laid there for a second as her foot rose to tap the ground for a couple seconds, and then stood up with her hand on her hip.

"You know if I were to seriously fight, I would just have stepped on you right?"

"Without a doubt."

"It would be my win."

"Of course."

"Keep it in mind."

"Hmm."

Both women crouched to the ground, fingers digging into the ruined grass, slightly leaned forward. Raising a hand, I slowly held it above Harper's head beside me. From the corner of my eyes, I could see her follow my slow moving arm and stare up at my hand.

"Umm," My eyes narrowed as an intangible amount of power began to charge in the air. It was difficult distinguishing the different energies, both disturbingly similar. "What are you-"

BAM!

Their collision was so ground shaking the very earth beneath them exploded. Dirt, chunks of rock and grass flew everywhere as the force of their impact nearly rocked Harper back, a hefty piece of grass smacking my hand before crumbling to the ground.

"...ah, thanks." She said shakily. I lowered my hand.

The dirt had created a cloak of cover for them, limbs lashing out as quick striking sounds rung out in deafening waves. A pained grunt had me leaning forward, unable to make out who it came from, but whatever injury sustained slowed neither down as they began to grapple for full romance on the ground. Mykela kept attempting to hold Viper in a hold that would without a doubt strain or even dangerously injure her opponent, but with Vipers slim limbs and agile maneuvering to break free, each hold fell through. Viper struck out with her leg, attempting to break Mykela's stance, her knee bent, but her body did not drop too far before she used the same leg Viper struck out as a stepping stool, flipped over her all the while both refused to release each others hands. Now back to back, they both panted, each checking over their shoulders.

It would have been impossible to look away from them, even if the sky rained stars and the seas had swept the exact spot I stood. They twisted and turned around each other, stepping out and in when the other pushed her back or tried to drag the other forward. When neither got the upper, the change of dance, it would be difficult to pin point. One suddenly yanked, which ever way they least expected it, a slip of a foot or jab momentarily distracting one. Red, air borne for a moment as it landed in a silent wet splat. Unease stirred in my chest again, but I held still, respecting their will to fight. Spar sounded much better, neither disliked the other enough for a serious fight.

Then, for the last time, the dance changed. A now free hand struck out, the other spinning her opponent so she faced forward as she was pulled into my sister's arms, hand wrapping around her throat as dark eyes gleamed in victory. But Viper couldn't see the expression on Mykela's face like I could. I wasn't even sure how she pulled the move off with Vipers hand tightening around her throat. In a move that startled even my sister, she spun around, a move that would have torn her throat out if claws had been drawn, spun Viper in a violent yank while she kicked at her knees. Almost expectedly, Viper leaned back in order not to drop to her knees, and with the only hand that still held her, Mykela spun Viper around her like a dance partner, and wrapped my own sister's arm across her chest, and her own crossed under in a triple binding that had both monsters freezing in disbelief. It was not that I thought she could not do it, or that she would do poorly.

It was the utter bloodlust and ferocious grin that covered her face as she peered down at the frozen Viper, who eyed me with an expression I couldn't name. Mykela's expression was...purely predatory. It was as time was suspended as she made the decision of whether or not to finish off her catch. I began rising from my crouch slowly, but when a second pair of pitch black eyes came my way, I stopped. Besides me, Haper gulped. Blood slowly trickled down her neck, an injury below her ear. I squinted as I tried to decided what to do. This was new. I was afraid that any sudden sound or movement might cause her to lash out at Viper, and in her own right, my sister would undoubtedly defend herself.

Keeping my eyes on her, I turned inward and reached for her.

My side of the door had never been locked, so when I reached for the knob, I was faintly astonished to note that for once neither was hers. At once, I made myself smaller in form, human, as to not crowd her safe space while I ventured as far as I dared. The first thing I noted was the humongous tree that took root in the center of her dark world as I stepped on what looked like ripples of water. Cautiously, I wandered around it all, from a distance I watched as the branches swayed and leafs dropped to the ground, and then through it. For so much movement, it was unnervingly silent. I knew from experience what that meant, and so I looked up and searched.

Ah, there.

Crouched low, blending within the leaves and branches, only her gleaming eyes shone through like torches in the night. For a moment, I wondered how I hadn't felt those eyes, the heat they emitted as they scanned me from head to toe in distrust. Looking at both versions of herself, I couldn't name the odd sensation that filled me. Intrigue? Familiarity? I was not sure what I could name this feeling, all I knew was that staring at her brought on a feeling of melancholy I had not felt for a very long time.

"Are you alright?"

She watched me silently for a long time. Through my awakened state, I noted the seconds.

"Mykela." I whispered, my voice carried through this world, new ripples appeared beneath my feet as if her very name was another step taken forward.

"Why wouldn't I be?" She hissed out.

I pondered her response to my question.

"I am not certain of what has changed, but I know there has been a shift." Clasping my hands behind my back, I took a large step forward, she did not seem to mind. Lips pressing thin for a moment, she sighed, a hand creeping from out of her shadow as she grasped the trunk.

"This behavior is what unnerves me the most." She admitted with a curt air, she ducked, her eyes disappearing for a moment before she stood below the grand tree. Leaning against it with her arms crossed over her chest.

"What do you mean?" My forehead furrowed as I sought to find what could have been unpleasant in my behavior in her mind.

"Anyother would have said I was behaving odd and attempted to snap me back into focus. You, however, wish to reason with me despite not knowing what state of mind I may be in." She clarified with a far off expression. I took two steps forward, one more, and I would be on her small island beneath the tree. This snapped her back into place.

"Would you not have done the same in my shoes? Understand where I stand to know where to walk?" There was a human idiom that slipped my mind, but I surmise she understood what I wanted to say. The corners of her mouth lifted in a reluctant smile that made her eyes gleam.

"Ha." She shook her head in disbelief. "How terrible."

"For trying to understand you?" This time I was the one confounded.

"For reminding me of me." Her begrudging revelation made me grin, her eyes narrowed as I took that final step forward.

"We are much more similar than you know." Slowly, I reached out and trailed my finger down her chin, smiling at how soft she felt, before tucking my hand behind my back again. "More than words and pain, we are like time and patience, intertwined to and connected to the roots of the world, wherever we may be."

"I do not trust you." She whispered. Her words did not sadden me. I knew she was someone who had little trust to give, and so she kept that scarce amount to her chest. One day she would grow to trust me. I could wait.

"You do not have to, simply allow me to be by your side as I always have been."

"You gain nothing by doing so." She stated as if I were forgetting some grand point in a scheme.

"Then allow me to gain nothing." I bargained. "It has been my greatest joy."

"Masochist." She shook her head, but the smile she wore was genuine. My heart felt its true size in this small formed body.

"Not at all." I held out a hand. "Shall we?"

She snorted.

"I'll have you know I never lose control."

"What?"

With a secretive smile, she waved as the world on her side blurred in my eyes, and before I knew it, I was back on my side, and Mykela's black eyes were beginning to bleed backwards back into her pupil until her familiar brown eyes stared back at me. Viper was fast in untangling herself and springing away.

"Just remember Huntress," she made hast to stand beside me. "I could have stepped on you and won. This changes nothing grand."

"I appreciate the practice." Mykla said offhandedly, reaching up, her fingers lingered on her wound before dropping. Besides me, Viper bared her teeth.

"Step. On." Was all she said before walking off. I watched her for a moment.

"Now that you can go all Wonder Woman on anyone, what now?" Harper asked a very good question. I stilled, waiting anxiously for Mykela's answer. Things were about to change again, but this time the word permanent floated in my mind. It bought on a sliver of fear.

"Now? What happens now, Venom?"

She wasn't looking in my direction, but at the sky, and yet it still seemed as if I had her full undivided attention. Harper glanced back and forth between the two of us with a tilt of her head.  I wondered what we looked like to her, two acquaintances of time working together towards a mysterious goal? Begrudging friendship?

She was inquiring, as if we hadn't once spoken on what would happen, but again we had never gotten this far. Time was the most important factor here, and yet everything was happening fast.

"Now we return to the scene of the crime." Saying the words out loud, speaking them into existence, was heavier than I could have ever imagined. "Time to solve the murder of Mykela Debroughs."

I would have expected the words would cause a bitter expression to flash across her face, a grimace even, but the calm, tranquil air she maintained lulled me into questioning my whole reason for feeling such anxiety in the first place.

"Damn, that line is awesome on screen, chilling in person." Harper muttered, wrapping her arms around herself. "I suppose my...skills? Are no longer needed here?"

"You can return home if you would like or remain in the house." Offering her a small smile, I gestured to the house with my head. Humans were known for enjoying vacations. She looked away from my eyes twice, short bursts of nervous laughter escaping her.

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but you definitely didn't mean to make it sound like you're just handing over this house to me, right?" She questioned in bewildered incredulity.

"I believe he is." Mykela's voice had a warm hint of amusement as she glanced this way, but her words next words were somber. "After all, where we are going, there might be no coming back."

"Must you utter such ominous words?"

"Your'e retuning back to your world, aren't you? How? I thought you've been stuck on this side forever." Harper's tone sounded somewhat saddened.

"I've been here because this is where he-" she threw a pointed look in my direction. "ran off too, but the spell cast on me is the tether linking me to where I originated from." I ran my tongue over my teeth, grateful again for making the choice to flee from the huntress that had caught me unaware with her superb skills, unknowingly saving her life.

"It's time to remove the curse." We spoke simultaneously. There was a shared look, an unspoken agreement, and I felt lighter than air as these moments grew.

"Oh," the young witchling shifted in her spot. "good luck with that."

"Hmm." Was all Mykela responded with, staring off into the sky, her mind without a doubt far from this moment and in the past.

*                          *                             *

Harper rejected the house offer before returning to her own home, waving the check I had signed as she bid us farewell, and one last hug with Mykela that she seemed openly grateful about. I presume it was because she was family, distant from her original bloodline and world, but still family. As we had always been in the past, the three of us stood before the house watching as Harper's car drove off.

"She was a fun human." Viper sighed, turning to me and placing her elbow on my shoulder as she peered around to look at Mykela. "Ready to go home, Huntress?"

"Can we even attempt it?" "After all this time, it seems almost too easy with how things have been going."

Easy would not be a world I would ever use to describe this situation, or even all of the advances I've made while she's been...gone.

"Of course, after all, Venom here has all of the hook up's."

"Hook up's?" Brows furrowing Mykela eye'd be in suspicion. Amusment unfurled in my belly, I imagine she found it difficult to belive I would know anyone outside of us. She had been long for ever long time.

"I know a guy who can open portals earth bound, but he knows a guy with a time bending door." Patting me on the back, Viper's grin overtook her face, teeth gleaming, eyes curled upward in the corners.

"He sounds...important." Mykela's surmised with a slow nod. She would ask more questions later. I simply knew it.

"Top dog." My sister snickered with a laugh. Annoyance had me hissing at her as I jabbed her in the ribs with my elbow.

"Viper." I warned.

"What, did I lie?" Blinking innocently, she thew her head back and laughed when all I did was sigh as she walked away to no doubt, pack whatever she deemed important enough to bring with us. For a creature of scales and claws, I felt rather fleshy whenever those two were anywhere near each other.  Feeling Myekla's eyes on me, I turned to look down at her.

"We don't know what we might be walking into. Are you ready?"

"I doubt there will be anyone waiting for me with roses." I must have said the wrong thing, for she went on in a brusque tone, force behind every word. I had not heard such liveliness in her since that first life. "It doesn't matter if I'm ready or not, this curse had to be removed. I've had enough of living for a handful of years, only to find myself on the pointed side of a misplaced knife, mugging, accident or murder."

I flinched at the reminder of all of her tragic endings.

"Is there anyone you wish to-" I let the words die at her scathing look.

"You are the one who should be sending out goodbye cards. It sounds like you've gotten popular."

A grin over came my lips before I could understand why her tone made me smile. Her expression froze for a moment before she shook her head and looked elsewhere.

"Why are you grinning?"

"I've yet to know myself."

"So is this friend of yours going to help us?" She asked after a moments silence.

"Yes." Tucking my hands into my pants, I circled her in slow steps, she turned with me, keeping her front with mine until I ceased. "In fact, how would you like to meet a god?"
