The Struggle
A/N I would like to apologize in advance for how this book changes. It's very slice of life from here on out, so yeah I'll go back in and add chapters when I'm done, same with Double Rainbow. In the meantime, those of you who are okay with spoilers, I'm writing out stories from DragonClan, from the beginning to the end.
"Those will be the patrols for the day." Lightningstrike jumped down from the Great Tree.
"We need to get you ready." Phoenixwing told the little cat. Two moons had passed since the fateful event at the hollow. It was now late leaf-fall, and it was cold, wet, and constantly dismal
"Ready for what?" Silverpaw asked.
"Your assessment! Obviously." She rolled her eyes. "What did you think we were training for, mousebrain?"
Silverpaw smiled. "Right, that!"
Phoenixwing lead her out of camp gently and slowly. She wasn't feeling one hundred percent, but she ignored it. It didn't matter. She'd be fine.
Silverpaw took off as soon as they left the camp, making a beeline for the training hollow. It was still wet outside, the disgusting slushy earth making everything feel like RainClan territory. Phoenixwing, with disdain, noticed a drop of dirt on her feather. She tried to wipe it off, but instead made it dirtier. Making a duckface, she finally reached the training hollow.
"OH COME ON!"
The entire place was flooded.
Silverpaw looked at Phoenixwing. "Are we gonna have to go home?"
Phoenixwing wanted so badly to say yes. Her stomach had been hurting so much over the past moon, that giving in seemed like a luxury.
"No, this is great. It's practice."
"For what?"
"Fighting in RainClan territory."
Silverpaw's eyes lit up. "Okay!"
Phoenixwing watched as her apprentice did laps through the water. It was up past her paws, but not much higher. Just enough to weigh her down.
"Come on, catch up!" mocked Silverpaw, jumping off a log and splashing Phoenixwing in her face. Phoenixwing trudged after her, her stomach weighing her down.
Just the other day, Nightsky had jokingly told her to lay off the freshkill. It had hurt far more than she let on.
Silverpaw danced around logs scattered across the training hollow, as if she'd been doing it her whole life. A crackling flash of lightning burst in radiant glory overhead. Phoenixwing felt dizzy.
Silverpaw watched on. "A-a-are you okay?"
Phoenixwing nodded. "Yes, go on. Keep trying."
Silverpaw shook her head and bit her lip, and continued her practice. Another roll of thunder burst through the clearing, making Phoenixwing's fur stand on end.
"It's really close. We need to go home. Now." Phoenixwing mewed to her apprentice sternly.
Silverpaw's eyes were wide with concern.
Phoenixwing heaved past her towards the exit. The rain picked up, now a blistering, painful rain that stung her eyes.
Her ears pricked up as she heard a crack. Overhead, a branch fell, Phoenixwing barely ducking under it. To her dismay, her tail was caught and blood was welling. Water sprayed everywhere, blurring her vision.
"GO!" she yowled with the last of her strength.
Silverpaw, unwilling to leave her side, pulled her tail from under the branch. "We have to make it home."
Phoenixwing stumbled forwards, on and on. It was all nothingness, endless, painful nothingness...
Blood and water blurred everywhere as the two cats stumbled into camp. A screeching gasp rose up from Raindrop as Phoenixwing stumbled and face planted into the muddy earth and the world went black.
