CHAPTER 23

MONTHS WENT BY AS FAINA STAYED IN THE MOUNTAINS IN HER DRAGON FORM.

She searched for dragons, only to come up empty handed. Every night she would let out a cry, calling out for her kind.

She never got a response.

She spent her days thinking of the Witcher. Wondering what he was doing, if he was in good health. Hopefully he hasn't been in too much danger without her around.

She kept the medallion around her neck, gently resting against the scales of her neck. Showing it off, yet no one was around to see it.

Except for an occasional dwarf who would then proceed to run away, yelling, possibly pissing his pants.

The first day of spring came and she flew down from the mountain and she transformed back into her human form. Adelina was there, clothes in hand, prepared for her arrival.

She smiled at the red trousers and matching top. It was the day of the Fire Festival.

It was a celebration of dragons. The people of Zerrikania believed that winter ends only when the dragons melt the snow.

Once she was dressed, she held Katoka's hand and the three walked to the centre of the village.

Faina smiled as dragon shaped kites flew through the air. People fire danced on a stage, using torches to create flames to strengthen their moves, to create life.

It was truly beautiful. To see people out there who don't see dragons as monsters. Who honour them.

She wished her mother was around the see this.

Faina joined in on the dances before getting her face painted with Katoka.

"Will you go back into the mountains?" Adelina asked, as they made their way back to the ranch after the fireworks.

Faina hummed, carrying the sleeping girl on her hip, "I don't think so. There's a Witcher out there waiting for me."

"Be careful, Faina." Adelina advised, "One wrong move and he'll-"

"I told you, he's not like that." Faina responded,

"Nothing good comes from Witchers." Adelina sighed, "Wherever they go, death follows."

"It's a good think I can handle myself then."

The next morning, Faina dressed in her usual white tunic and black corset, paired with her tan trousers. She attached her dagger to her thigh before attaching her cloak to her shoulders.

"Do you have to go?" Katoka asked, tugging on her cloak,

"I'll be back by year's end." Faina kneeled down and brushed the little girl's hair from her face, "I'll always come back to you. In years to come, you and your child will be awaiting me each winter."

The little girl nodded before wrapping her arms around the dragon woman. Faina gave them one last smile before hopping on Nix's saddle and heading towards Geso.

Faina travelled north, searching for the Witcher. But no matter where she went, no one seemed to know what happened to the great Geralt of Rivia.

Not even the bard had any new songs about the White Wolf. At least none that reached her ears.

She spent the year searching for him, but never finding him. Outside every village she came across, she carved a wolf into a tree, hoping he would see it and know that she had been there.

But soon the cold had settled across the land once again. The year had come to another end with no sign of the Witcher.

Faina went back to Zerrikania with a heavy heart.
