CHAPTER 12
THEY LEFT THEIR HORSES AT THE WITCH'S HUT WHILE THEY WALKED BACK TOWARDS THE VILLAGE, SEARCHING FOR THE BEAST.
Faina kept a hand on her dagger, prepared to use it at any moment.
The sun had began to set as they walked through the village and Faina stopped as smoke filled the air. The roofs were on fire, and soon the grass was lit with it.
A large dog, bigger than the ones they've faced, walked through the flames, revealing itself to them. Geralt unsheathed his sword and Faina followed with her dagger, "What's the game plan?"
"Don't get killed."
The Beast howled and more hounds followed, "Geralt." She whispered,
"Go." He told her and she looked at him with wide eyes,
"What?"
"Go, Faina."
"I'm not leaving you!" Faina argued.
A ring of fire circled them and Faina raised her dagger. Geralt used magic to push them all back. The two stood back to back so none of the hounds could sneak up on them.
The hounds attacked. Faina stabbed one in the chest, where its heart would be. It dropped and burst into flames.
Geralt cleanly sliced the head off of another one and the hounds began to circle them.
Faina threw her dagger at one of them and it pierced it through the eyes. She ran over to retrieve her weapon, "Faina!"
She was knocked over and gasped as she hit the ground. She grabbed the hilt of her dagger and shove the blade through the hound's neck. It dropped on top of her and she groaned.
The howls of more hounds approached and she quickly pushed the hound off and stood to face them, "Come and get me." She smirked before she ran into the safety of the burning house behind her.
Three hounds cornered her in the house. Faina grinned before raising her hands and fire filled the room.
But it wasn't regular fire. It was dragon's fire.
The hounds immediately turned to ash and Faina walked out of the house before it collapsed. She spotted a hound approaching Geralt as he found the Beast.
Faina aimed her dagger and threw it.
Just as Geralt stayed the Beast, her dagger hit her mark and the hound dropped. Geralt turned, his eyes wide, and stared at the corpse.
Faina walked over and pulled the dagger out, "Three- one, Witcher. What would you do without me?" She smiled, before looking down at the body of the Beast, "It's over?"
"It's over." He confirmed,
Faina motioned to his sword, "Can I borrow that?"
He stared at her in confusion before handing the sword over. She lifted the heavy weapon before bringing the blade down on the Beast's neck, decapitating it. Faina handed the sword back over before wrapping the Beast's head in her cloak.
She stood up and Geralt continued staring at her, "I, uh, may have made a bet back in Ban Glean that we would kill the beasts."
Geralt shook his head before the two began walking back towards the witch's hut. Once he was far enough ahead of her, Faina turned back to the village.
With glowing purple eyes, the fires grew. There would be no stopping it.
They made it back to the hut and showed the villagers the head of the Beast. They grudgingly handed the reward over before saying goodbye to Abigail, and getting on their horses and riding back to Ban Glean.
Geralt stayed outside the bar as Faina walked inside, head in hand. Everyone became quiet as she walked through and over to the bar, where the two men from the day before sat.
She dropped the head next to them on the bar, "I'll take those 50 ducats." She grinned.
The men stared at the head for a moment before handing her a sac, "Pleasure doing business with you." She nodded before leaving the bar.
"How much?" Geralt asked as Faina climbed back onto Nix's saddle,
She tossed him the sac, "50 ducat."
He raised an eyebrow, "All that work for 50 ducat?"
Faina shrugged, "Didn't want to push my luck."
