Chapter 4: Sanchit Maheshwari
As I slowly emerged from the depths of sleep, the morning light filtering through the curtains, my head pounded with the intensity of a jackhammer. Groggily, I blinked my eyes open, only to be met with a scene straight out of a nightmare.
This wasn't my hotel room. A woman, adorned in a breathtaking white wedding gown, sat beside me, her features twisted in a mix of confusion and fear, shouting at me to wake up.
Panic surged through me as I took in the unfamiliar surroundings, my heart racing as I tried to piece together the events of the previous night, but all I could remember was a blur of alcohol and adrenaline, the details shrouded in a haze of intoxication.
As the woman beside me let out a strangled scream, the sound tearing through the silence of the room, my heart leaped into my throat, "Who are you? What's going on?" she demanded, her voice trembling with fear and confusion.
I struggled to find my own voice, my mind a jumble of emotions as I grappled with the reality of our situation. "I... I don't know," I stammered, my words barely audible over the pounding of my heart.
But as our eyes met, a flicker of recognition passed between us, a silent acknowledgment of the inexplicable bond that now tied us together. We may have been strangers, but in that moment, we were united by the surreal circumstances that had brought us here.
Frantically, we searched the room for any clues that could shed light on the events of the previous night.
And then, she found it.
The wedding certificate, lying abandoned on the floor, its crumpled edges a testament to the chaos of the night before. With trembling hands, she reached for it, my heart too pounding in my chest as I too scanned the document for answers.
And then I saw something which widened my eyes. Our photograph from the church. We kissed each other.
As the realization of our impromptu marriage sank in, a wave of nausea washed over me, threatening to consume me with its intensity.
Married. To a stranger. In Las Vegas. How had this happened? Dad is going to disown me. My sister, my Sameera is going to be upset at me. What had I done? Ughhh!!
Beside me, the woman clutched the wedding certificate with trembling hands, her eyes wide with disbelief, "We... we got married," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the pounding of her heart. I nodded slowly, the weight of our situation settling heavily on my shoulders. "It looks like it," I replied, my voice hoarse with emotion.
As we struggled to come to terms with the reality of our predicament, a sense of urgency washed over me. We needed to figure out what had happened, and fast. With trembling hands, I reached for my phone, my fingers fumbling as I dialed the numbers of my best friends, Aryan and Sam. They were my brothers in arms, my partners in crime, and I knew I needed their help now more than ever.
As the phone rang on the other end, my heart pounded in my chest, my mind racing with a million questions.
What would I say to Aryan and Sam? How would they react to the news of my impromptu marriage in Las Vegas? We were here to celebrate Sam's bachelor's party and now I was the one who was married.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the call was answered, and I took a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever came next. It was time to face the music, to confront the reality of our drunken escapade, and to figure out what the hell we were going to do next.
As I dialed Aryan's number, my heart pounded in my chest, my mind racing with a million questions and fears. What would they both say when they heard the news? Would they be angry? Disappointed? Shocked?
After a few rings, Aryan finally picked up, his voice groggy with sleep, "Hello? Why are you calling so early man?" "Aryan, it's me, Sanchit," I replied urgently, my voice trembling with urgency, "Listen, something bad and crazy happened last night, I need your help. I need you guys here. "
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line, followed by a loud groan from Sam, "Ugh, Sanny, can't this wait until morning? I'm trying to sleep off the hangover from last night." I winced at his irritation, knowing that this was not going to be an easy conversation, "I know, Sammy and Aryan, but this can't wait. Please, just listen to me," I pleaded, my voice shaking with emotion.
"Tell us what is it?" Aryan grumbled, his tone impatient. Taking a deep breath, I launched into the story, recounting the events of the previous night in a rush of words. As I spoke, I could hear Aryan's gasps of disbelief, his voice growing more frantic with each passing moment.
When I finally finished, there was a stunned silence on the other end of the line, broken only by the sound of Aryan's rapid breathing. And then, without warning, he erupted into a flurry of questions and exclamations, his voice overlapping in a chaotic symphony of shock and disbelief.
"What the fudge dude? Married In Vegas? To a stranger girl? Are you freaking serious?!" Aryan exclaimed, his voice rising in disbelief. "Man, tell me you're joking! This has to be some kind of prank, right?",Sam added, his tone equally incredulous.
But as the reality of the situation sank in, their voices grew more subdued, their questions giving way to a stunned silence. "Oh my God, Sanchu, I can't believe this, we're coming there, you just wait, we'll find a solution" Aryan whispered, his voice trembling with emotion.
Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes as I struggled to find an answer, my mind reeling with the weight of the situation. "I... I owe it to you, guys," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper, "Thank you for being here, just you being with me helps,"
There was another moment of silence on the other end of the line, followed by a deep sigh from Aryan. "Okay, now no more thanks, we're coming. Cut the call now," he said firmly, his voice filled with determination, "We'll figure this out together. We promise! "
As I hung up the phone, a sense of calm washed over me, knowing that I had my best friends by my side. And as I turned to face the woman beside me, the gravity of our situation began to sink in, she and I exchanged nervous glances, our minds racing with questions and uncertainty.
With a tentative smile, I extended my hand towards her. "I'm Sanchit," I introduced myself, my voice tinged with a mixture of apprehension and curiosity. She did not return the smile, albeit somewhat hesitantly, taking my hand in hers. "I'm Sidhisha," she replied, her voice soft and uncertain. "Totally not nice to meet you, under... uh, well, these circumstances."
I nodded in agreement, the weight of our predicament pressing down on us like a heavy fog. "Likewise," I murmured, my mind still reeling from the shock of our impromptu marriage. As we tried to piece together the events of the previous night, Sidhisha began to recount her memories. She explained how she had been singing karaoke with her friends, who were all drunk, while she remained sober.
Her throat had grown dry from all the singing, prompting her to venture to the bar area in search of something to drink. "And that's when the waiter handed me a drink, saying it was called 'Soft Watery Solace'," she recounted, her brow furrowing with confusion. "I thought it was just a soft drink, but..." Before she could finish her sentence, I felt a surge of recognition wash over me.
"Wait... 'Soft Watery Solace'?" I interjected, my voice rising with disbelief. "That wasn't a soft drink. It was vodka. Heavy vodka shots, to be precise." Sidhisha's eyes widened in shock at my revelation, her expression mirroring my own disbelief. "Vodka? But... I didn't realize," she trailed off, her voice tinged with a mixture of confusion and alarm.
"After that, I don't remember anything." As the reality of our situation began to sink in, a sense of urgency washed over me. We needed to find out what had happened after Sidhisha had unknowingly consumed those vodka shots, and how we had ended up getting married in Las Vegas of all places. But one thing was for certain. This was going to be one hell of a story to tell.
Sanchit is lucky to have supportive friends like Aryan and Sam. And, looks like they've just realized that Sidhisha actually drank vodka shots.
What do you think will they do next?
