A smirk formed on (Y/n)’s lips as she slipped out of the bakery window undetected in the dead of night. This was one of the countless times her perfected skills in thievery had helped her.

After all, people were just too cold to give what they could to the poor these days. It was every man, or woman, for themselves. You didn’t want to die out here on the dark streets of Meteor City. People here were very resourceful. They would undoubtedly find a use for your dead body as well.

(Y/n) carefully hid half of the bakery bread she had salvaged from the shop in the boughs of the tall oak near her house. She stopped, thinking for a bit. Would it be wise to head home? She would certainly receive another beating for the meager food supply she had brought.

Every girl for herself. (Y/n) grabbed the food and dashed off just as her father opened the door.

“You!” the alcoholic roared, shaking a half empty liquor bottle. (Y/n) did not stop, but made her way around the house. If this man was all she had, it would be a waste of her time. She had better things to do.

She looped by an open bedroom window, thankful the place had no ventilation, and grabbed the meager savings lying carelessly on the floor before continuing on her way. Soon, her father’s shouts grew distant. She had escaped.

But out of the frying pan into the fire, they say. Soon, other footsteps pursued her. (Y/n) ran as fast as she could into a maze of back corridors, hoping to lose them, but couldn’t. These people were probably thieves like her that knew how to maneuver these corridors with acuity.

A sharp pain pierced the back of (Y/n)’s head, and her legs disobeyed her, letting her body crash down on the hard cement. The bread fell a few feet in front of her, where it was scooped up by hungry hands.

“Why, I see I’ve stolen from you, my clever thief.” The dark-haired girl that stole from her grinned horribly, making (Y/n) shake with rage. “Bye!” She flounced away cheerily, and the other girl put her face on the ground in defeat, having wasted all of her energy looking for this food.

Meteor City also had its share of thief-of-thieves. It was just something (Y/n) hadn’t anticipated in her weeks upon weeks of careful planning to raid the bakery when the baker wasn’t there. Thieves-of-thieves, of course, planned two steps ahead instead of the usual one.

The cloudy sky decided right then to begin pelting the poor girl with cold, hard drops. The fallen thief let her own frustration meld with the cool liquid, tasting her own salty tears as they travelled down her face to the ground.

Suddenly, another presence appeared. (Y/n) tasted the metallic taste of blood in the cold rainwater below her. She opened her eyes to find the water had acquired a sanguine color. Murder. Straining against the pain, she tried to get up and escape from her already apparent failure.

A hand gripped her shoulder from behind, and soft, wheaty texture was brought to her lips. (Y/n) took the bread eagerly, smiling despite the rain.

Turning around with soaked bangs covering her eyes, the grateful thief cast her eyes upon her savior.

Standing in front of the thief-of-thieves’ corpse, the Master Thief basked in his own glory. His dark eyes and bangs and the blade he held that was as sharp as his intelligence gleamed in the rain. (Y/n) immediately admired him.

“S-Sir,” she began, but couldn’t find the words and hung her head down, embarrassed. The gentle hand now patted her head in acceptance. Reassurance.

“It’s alright. I’m a thief, too.” A smile of mixed mischief and welcoming greeted (Y/n). “I am Chrollo-kun to you, (Y/n).”
