The fist made contact with your face and that was when everything went black. Birds chirped inside your head and the idiots that punched you in the face walked away, laughing, leaving your cheek throbbing in pain. The only thing you remembered at that moment was the date: May thirteenth. Another day in your horrible, stupid and screwed up life.

"What is this, the tenth time?" The school nurse's assistant frowned at you, worry carved into his brow. The nurse was dealing with another student, someone with a much more serious injury, so she requested the assistant to take a look at you. This was a common occurrence; your injuries weren't horrible, but they were painful, nonetheless. Every incident left you with the assistant in a small office, your face or head or arm or something else pulsating with pain, or even bleeding.

"The eleventh," you corrected him, your words causing pain as they left your mouth because of the bloody lip you had been left with, "I hate those jerks."

The assistant sighed and you looked down at your feet. There was one good thing about getting beat up, something so nice that it almost made the pain feel like it was worth it - almost, but not quite. He was quite a handsome man, this assistant, and what was better, he was a student, just like you, except a year older. His name was Kaito Shion, and he was the only guy you had ever seen with blue hair that actually looked nice on him.

"You really should talk to someone about it," Kaito sat on a chair facing you. You were sitting on a small bed with an bag of ice in your hands, pressed it against your injured cheek.

"I can't," you said, "My parents aren't around, the teachers didn't do anything about it...there's nobody to talk to."

"You're talking to me," he smiled, making you blush. Thankfully, it wasn't that visible, given how your cheeks were already red from being hit, "Maybe I can help."

"You are helping," you whispered, doing your best to face him, but you just couldn't look the boy in the eye, "You're helping me right now."

He shrugged and reached forward, taking the ice. His hand clasped over yours in the process and electricity coursed through your palm as a result of such a simple touch.

"S-Sorry!" Kaito apologized and quickly took the ice, realizing how the physical contact had left you feeling flustered, "I'll get you some bandages for your forehead, along with some fresh ice."

He smiled sweetly and your heart throbbed. After he left, you sighed, wiping your forehead, which was caked with blood, thinking about how you had been seeing Kaito for over a month now, every week or so. He didn't seem to have a girlfriend, either, but you only knew that because once, you stalked him. The whole stalking thing had left you feeling guilty, but you couldn't help it. You had a huge crush on the nurse's blue-haired assistant.

Kaito didn't return immediately, so you decided to hum to yourself while looking around. There were posters of dental hygiene and hand-washing stuck in the little room, and in one corner, towards the head of the bed you were sitting on, was somebody's black backpack. That was what really caught your attention.

It was mostly unzipped, with the edges of notebooks and binders jutting out. A small, pink sheet of paper was folded up and it protruded from the waves of white note paper, practically sticking out of one of the binders. You took a quick look around and snatched the sheet up, unfolding it and reading it.

The first thing you noticed was the date, written neatly near the top with dark blue pen. It was strange though; the paper was dated a week from today: May twentieth. You tossed your confusion aside and read on, stopping at the next line.

It said your name, written with that same handwriting,p and that same blue pen. Why was your name on this person's paper? You read on.

"I'm never going to be able to say this without writing it down, that's how lame I am. See, it's sort of like this. I really, really like you, _____. Every time I see you in the halls my life stops right there. I love seeing you and talking to you, but it hurts me to see you hurt like that. I want to protect you, _____, because I...well, yeah, like I said. I'm stupid, and I said it already, but I'll say it again. I love you. I'm so sorry if this is creepy. I really don't want it to be, but if I held back my feelings any longer, I'd explode. Anyway, sorry for wasting your time. I just wanted to tell you how I felt.

"-Kaito Shion"

You sucked in a breath after reading the letter. Kaito liked you? He was going to somehow give this note to you as a confession? Suddenly, the sound of footsteps pulled you out of your jumbled up thoughts and you hurriedly put the note back into Kaito's open bag, not having enough time to worry about how you had gotten some blood on it.

"_____, are you okay?" Kaito walked in with some fresh ice and looked at your red face worriedly, "You look sick..."

"I'm fine," you nodded briskly.

He smiled and your gaze snapped to his mouth and the way his lips curled up and made that perfect smile. He sat down on his chair and leaned forward, pressing the cold bag of ice against your cheek, making you blush.

"I can do it!" You accidentally snapped, taking the bag from Kaito. He looked surprised and hurt. You could practically hear the sound of your heart shattering and you began cursing at yourself. Why did you have to hurt this boy? You liked him, and he liked you back! It was just a matter of time before he confessed.

"I'm sorry," Kaito looked down at the ground, "May I...apply the bandages to your forehead, at least, _____?"

You couldn't say no, not after you had just hurt him so badly. Slowly, you nodded and the boy began wiping your forehead with a cloth soaked with antiseptic. You winced, the stinging sensation catching you by surprise.

"It's okay...," Kaito's voice was as gentle as his touch, the way he carefully cleaned your wound, "Just a little more..."

"Right," you whispered, feeling his eyes on you. He wasn't smiling or frowning; he seemed deep in thought, as though he was concentrating on something. That something seemed to be you and your hurt forehead.

"There we go," he pulled the cloth away and smiled, "That wasn't so bad, eh?"

You nodded, swallowing slowly. Your heart was still soaring from the note you had just read, and it was going to be hard to wait till next week. Kaito was right there, in front of you, and he liked you, and you liked him, too, but you were going to have to wait.

"_____, if you don't tilt your head up, I won't be able to do this," Kaito said.

"Huh?" You looked at him. He was holding the bandages in his hand, looking at you and waiting patiently, "Sorry..."

You tilted your head up and Kaito got to his feet, standing in front of you. He started to wrap the bandage around your forehead slowly, tightening it and finally tying them up to hold them in place.

"There we go!" He looked down at her with a huge smile. He was about to go on, you could tell, but then a girl knocked on the open door. You frowned. She looked familiar, like a student, but a little older than you. She was beautiful, too.

Kaito turned to look at her and they both laughed, starting up a lively conversation. You grimaced a little. A small flame of jealously flickered inside of you, but then you realized: Kaito probably dated the letter a week ahead because he still wasn't sure how he felt about you. He didn't love you, not yet, anyway, you were starting to doubt if he ever would, with the way that girl was practically flirting with him.

Quickly, you got to your feet and ran past the two, out of the room, tears welling up in your eyes.

"_____!" You heard Kaito call your name, but you didn't want to go back. Once he found out that you had touched his things, he would despise you. After all, only a thief or some horrible person would stick their nose into someone else's belongings, right?

You sprinted straight towards the school doors, throwing your already hurt body against the doors in an attempt to push them open. You ran out into the schoolyard and kept running without looking behind or in front. Your eyes were too wet with tears to be of much use.

Suddenly, you stopped dead in your tracks, crashing against something that felt like a wall, except you knew, deep inside, that this was something far, far worse. A large hand grabbed a fistful of your hair and you cried out in pain as the person pulled.

"So the little brat hasn't had enough for one day, huh?" The voice was too familiar. It was the voice that lingered in your nightmares, a voice that was too hard for you to fight, "And look at this...got your little forehead all fixed up, eh?"

"Let me go!" You wiped your tears away furiously and smashed your fists against the bully's body, but it was futile, "Damn you,you stupid..."

Your insult flew from your lips without being said as the bully punched you in the face again, letting go of your hair and letting you drop to the hard, cracked tarmac. Laughter filled the air around you.

"You know, I absolutely hate people like you," the bully snickered. Your eyes darted around to take in the bystanders and the bully's friends. Your face throbbed with pain and you knew that this second serving of pain was far from over.

"I think you should leave," this was another voice, the voice of a young man emerging from the crowds, pushing aside people and walking past you. You gaped at him, your finger against a cut that was carved across the length of your right cheek. The breeze hit the wound and it felt naked. That same breeze hit the young man's dark blue hair, making it blow in the wind, leaving you awestruck for a moment, making all your pain disappear.

"Well, if it isn't the little nurse's boy," the bully scoffed. You were practically glued to the ground, watching the two talk it out, though you could see the bully clenching and unclenching his fists. Worry dotted your expression. You didn't want Kaito to get hurt.

"Don't you think I'm helping you?" The bully sneered, shrugging, "You'd be bored without any bodies to fix up, huh? I break 'em, you mend 'em."

Kaito twitched and you could tell that he was gritting his teeth. "Don't ever talk about people like that!" He burst out, taking another step towards the bully, "People aren't machines! They can't just be fixed like that! They die, they get hurt..."

Kaito looked down at you and you felt tears well up in your eyes as you pressed the flat of your palm against your burning cheek. He turned away from the bully and offered you his hand.

"They have feelings," the blue haired boy finished, the wild fire in his eyes calming to a glowing ember as he looked at you, "Right, _____?"

You nodded slowly. He lifted a hand and stroked your hurt cheek before leading you out of the crowds, which began to dissipate. You swallowed slowly and wiped your tears with one hand. Kaito was holding the other.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, "I shouldn't have yelled at him like that."

"No, you did the right thing," You said softly, "You helped me."

"You...read it, didn't you?" Kaito asked, stopping in front of the school doors, "The note?"

You sighed and nodded slowly, forcing yourself to look him in the eye. His icy blue eyes were warm when they focused on you, and the way he squeezed your hand gently made your heart throb. It was almost as though he healed your pain.

"I saw the fresh bloodstains," Kaito whispered, "I love you, _____."

You knew your reply, and you didn't have to think about it before saying it. "I love you, too, Kaito. I...I always did."

He smiled and pulled open the door, his face a little flushed, which made him look adorable. "Really?"

"Really. You're...you make the pain go away without the ice and bandages."

He laughed softly with you in the darkness of the dimly lit hall, leaning forward and pressing his forehead against yours. "You look pretty hurt right now."

"But it doesn't hurt that much," you whispered, looking up at him, "Because I'm with you."

"But I don't want it to hurt at all...," he closed his eyes and kissed you sweetly.

You didn't need bandages or ice or antiseptic. You just needed him.
