"_______, you're adorable!"
I blushed and pushed my best friend away. She laughed, wrapping her arms around her torso.
"Rin!" I yelled. "Stop!"
"I'm sorry, it's...it's just..." She stifled her laughter and met my eyes. "You really like my brother, don't you?"
"I...I..." I looked away, walking around the room. I stopped by the bed and plopped down with a sigh. "Y-Your brother used to be really cute..."
"Used to be?" She smirked and sat down beside me.
"Yeah, back when we were fourteen-ish," I mumbled. "He's gotten taller now. Taller than me!"
"So you don't like him anymore?" Rin batted her eyelashes and pouted at me. "My best girlfriend has a crush on my brother!"
"I still like him," I said softly. I liked Rin's brother, Len, very much. I felt feverish whenever he was around but I was sure I'd never get him. Even if I told him how I felt, which I wouldn't do in a million years because I was too afraid, he'd say no. He was so popular. All the girls liked him.
"You should tell him," Rin swung her legs back and forth. "How long have you liked him for again?"
"T-Three years..." I stammered. We were all seventeen now and my feelings were as intense as they used to be three years ago.
"And you only told me last year!" Rin scolded. "_______, I thought we were best friends."
"We are!" I said quickly. "Rin, I...I only hesitated because you're his sister."
She grinned deviously. "You should've told me sooner because of that! I know him well and I can set you two up!"
"No thanks!"
"So, what're you going to do, then?" Rin crossed her arms over her chest. "You've liked him for three years. You still like him. You won't tell him how you feel and you won't let your best friend, who happens to be his sister, do anything, either."
"I'm hoping it dies out," I muttered. Rin smacked my back really hard, making me cry out.
"It hasn't died out yet, so it won't!" She yelled.
"What won't die out?"
We looked up and saw my crush standing in the doorway. I nearly fainted. He was naked, save for the towel wrapped his waist. He was soaking wet, his blond hair curtaining his eyes.
"L-Len!" I muttered before falling back onto the sheets. Rin looked down at me before looking at her brother.
"Rin, _______, what're you guys doing in my room?" Len asked. I gasped and scampered off of the bed. Len's bed? I was sitting on Len's bed? Lying in Len's bed? This was all too much for me. Add that to the fact that he was right in front of me with only a towel on, and it's a miracle that I didn't die of a massive nosebleed on the spot.
"Oh, right!" Rin clapped her hands together. "This is Len's room!"
"W-What do you mean, don't you know your way around your own house?" I asked queasily.
"Brother, _______ is looking for your USB memory stick," Rin lied, glancing at me and grinning evilly. "It's driving her crazy!"
"Oh, I'm sorry!" He shook his head apologetically and approached me, making me scream. He froze and stared at me. "A-Are you okay, _______?"
"Yes yes yes yes, I'm perfectly fine!" I said, my right eye twitching madly as I raked my gaze up and down Len's beautiful body. He was so close, I wanted to touch him.
But I didn't.
"Okay, then!" He smiled and my heart began to soar. I guess he still was cute, in a different way. Cute or not, I still liked him.
"Y-You don't have to hurry," I said, not taking a step back as he came closer. I had to stop being so sheepish, for sure.
"Nah, it's fine," he said, pulling open his bedside drawer, which was right next to where I was standing. I shamelessly ogled him as he shuffled through the bits and bobs in the drawer. Rin giggled from a few feet away. My face flushed. I was feeling bold, stupid and unabashed.
"Here you go," he beamed, pulling a memory stick out of the drawer. He held it up in the air momentarily before looking at me and holding it out, offering it to me.
"Thank you," I said slowly, taking it from his hand.
"No problem," he said before turning to look at Rin. "Now, can I get dressed?"
"Can we stay?" Rin smiled.
"Rin, what're you saying?" I screamed.
"Uh..." Len's eyes widened. Rin giggled.
"I'm teasing!" She sang before grabbing my arm and yanking me out. "Have fun, Len!"
'Have fun'?
Rin slammed the door shut and continued to laugh like a hyperactive schoolgirl, but I suppose she and I were just schoolgirls. I thrust my hand with the memory stick forward, against her chest.
"Here! Keep it!" I hissed. She smirked and swiped it from me. "I don't need this!"
"You were practically eating him with your eyes, _______!" Rin linked her arm with mine and dashed down the hall. "There's a little window out here! If we hurry, you can catch Len changing!"
"I don't want to!"
"For goodness sakes, _______, act more like a crazy girl in love!" Rin sang. She pulled me out the back door of her home and dragged me over to Len's window. The curtain was parted slightly in the middle and we could see Len putting his pants on.
He was still shirtless. My heart rate just wasn't slowing down. I clamped my eyes shut before I looked at anything else.
"_______, you won't get a chance like this ever again!" Rin whispered. "Unless you tell him, of course...he's hot, right?"
"Rin!"
"Come on, let's go back inside," she said. We headed back into Rin's home and sat down on the living room sofa. She turned the television on and started flicking through the channels.
"Are you going to tell him?" She asked.
"Can't you just...leave me alone?" I groaned, resting my head in my hands.
"No," Rin said plainly. "I can't."
We were both quiet. Rin continued to surf channels, stopping on an anime channel at was airing Ouran High School Host Club. She turned up the volume and I sat back, watching the show and doing my best to ignore the awkwardness that hung in the air over me and my friend.
"Rin? _______?" I heard Len's voice. It made me jump.
"We're in the living room!" Rin called. In a matter of moments, the blonde walked in. He was wearing black pants and a white button down shirt. A small, white towel hung around his neck and his hair was still sopping wet.
"You guys watching something?" He said, sitting down on the armrest next to me and looking at the television. "Oh, I think I've seen this show."
"Y-You have?" I tried to start a conversation.
"Yeah, I think," Len grabbed his towel and started drying his hair. "It's the one with all the guys, right? And the girl who pretends to be a guy? Anyway, do you guys want something to eat? I'm going to the kitchen for a banana."
"Oranges!" Rin yelled, throwing her arms up in the air.
"I'm fine, thanks," I said.
"You sure?" Len asked. Rin smirked.
"I'm sure!" I said.
"Okay," Len jumped off of the armrest and walked into the kitchen. I slouched, groaning.
"You should come to my house more often," Rin said. "You'll get to see Len so much!"
"Ugh...that reminds me," I pulled my phone out and looked at the time. "I have to be home in twenty minutes."
Rin groaned. "That's practically right now!"
"I know," I said, getting up. "I should get going."
"Ooh, there's Len!" Rin whispered, her eyes lighting up. I spun around and saw Len walking out of the kitchen, a banana in one hand and an orange in the other.
"What's up, _______?" He asked. "The show's not even over yet."
"_______ needs to be home in twenty minutes," Rin smiled. Len tossed the orange to her and she caught it. He started to peel the banana.
"Oh, that's too bad," Len mused, taking a bite of his banana. He looked amazing as he ate, too. "We'll see you soon, huh?"
"Len, you should walk her home."
"What?" I yelped. "No, I'm fine!"
"No, Rin's right," Len smiled at me, turning me into a little puddle on the floor. Not literally of course. "Come on, _______, I'll walk with you. It's nice outside."
Rin winked at me and I took a deep breath. "Okay," I said. "T-Thank you, Len."
We left the house soon after. Just as I had stepped out, Rin yanked me back in momentarily.
"You have to tell him!" She hissed.
"I can't!"
"_______, I should've told you sooner, but for the last month or so, Len's been acting strange. I think he likes someone, and if you don't tell him..."
"I..." I started to feel queasy. "O-Okay, I'll try. Thank you, Rin."
She pushed me out and I hurried up to Len. He was waiting for me a few feet away, his hands in his pockets.
"You okay?" He asked, grinning. "You look kinda flushed."
"I'm fine," I beamed, smiling as widely as I could. "I'm...yeah, I'm fine!"
We walked quietly for a few minutes. The late afternoon sun hung low in the sky as sunset drew closer. Orange light painted the empty sidewalks and roads. Gulls cawed and flapped across the sky. I was mostly calm. I was trying to remain calm. I was thinking about Len, who was walking right beside me.
"Len, can I tell you something?" I said it before I could convince myself not to.
"Of course you can," Len looked at me, smiling sweetly. His flaxen hair shone, thanks to the sunlight. "But there's something you should know first."
"Huh?"
He laughed softly. "I'm sorry, _______, I feel so uneasy when I think about telling this to Rin, but I can't hold it back anymore. I need to tell someone, right?"
"Oh..." I nodded slowly. "Is it about a girl?"
"W-What?" Len's eyes widened.
"I'm sorry I said it like that!" I apologized quickly. "I didn't mean to be nosy!"
"No, no, it's fine!" He shook his head. "It's not about a girl, but...I do like a girl."
"You do?"
"Yeah, but..." Len put a hand over his mouth and mumbled something.
"I didn't hear you," I whispered. "W-Well, anyway, you don't have to tell me about her! Just tell me the other thing!"
"N-Nah, you go first," Len smiled. "Mine's probably not as important."
I nodded. My house was coming into view. I had to tell him right now. Rin would be disappointed otherwise. Yes or no, I needed an answer.
"Len I like you," I said quickly.
"What?"
"Len," I looked up at him. "I. Like. You!"
"Huh?" He yelped, stopping in his tracks. "You...like me?"
"I love you!" I exclaimed. It was so much easier the third time. "I've liked you for three years, Len! Before, I thought you were really cute! Now you're taller than me but I'm still crazy about you! I like you a lot and I can't get this feeling to stop, so..."
"I like you, too!" He screamed, pulling me towards his body suddenly, his arms coiled around my small figure as he hugged me tightly. "Oh my God, _______, finally! Finally!"
"Wha...?" I pulled back and looked up at him. "What do you mean?"
"I've been wanting to tell you for months, _______, months," he grinned, tapping my nose. "I love you, as well."
I stared at him. "So..."
He stroked my hair slowly, smiling. His blue eyes sparkled. I felt so unbelievably happy and amazing, in his embrace, after only dreaming about this for three years. I guess I had his sister to thank for all this, but at that moment, I had something more important on my mind. We looked at each other for a long moment and I stood on my tiptoes. He cupped my face in his right hand and held my close with his left, bringing his mouth close to mine for a gentle and wonderful first kiss.
