"He's not creepy," I insisted again and again over the course of many weeks. "I don't know who he is, though. He's always got that hood covering his face."
I started seeing him when I was almost seventeen. It was two days before my birthday and the house was empty. There was this little window in the living room, a small, clear pane of glass, and that was where he showed up. I had entered the living room to pick up a notebook that I had left on the sofa.
The area was dark and brown, mostly. The walls were covered with dark brown wallpaper and the furniture was wooden. The lights were all off and it was raining heavily outside. Dull daubs of greyish light passed through the windows and spilled across the wood floor.
I entered the living room and stopped suddenly because he was right there, right outside my window, standing with that hold over his face. It obscured his eyes but I could see the tip of his nose and his lips, which were curled into a small smile. His skin was pale. Slowly, I approached him and got a glimpse of the dark blue hair that touched his cheeks.
"Hello?" I whispered. The window's glass stood between us.
"Happy early birthday," he said before turning and walking away. I held my breath before opening the window and sticking my head out into the rain, getting my coral pink hair drenched.
"Hey!" I yelled as he kept walking. "Come back! Who are you?"
"I'll be at your birthday party!" He yelled back, not bothering to turn around.
Sure enough, there he was, two days later. At first, I waited for him to show up at my door but after all my friends had shown up, I realized. Quickly, I hurried into my living room and looked towards the window. There he was.
"Hello," he said after I opened the window a crack.
"W-Who are you?" I asked.
"Please don't ask me that question."
"Why not?"
"Because I don't like the answer," he said. "I don't like who I am."
I frowned. "Will you come inside?"
"No."
He turned and walked away.
I didn't see him after that, not for a few days. I went to the window everyday. I started to stay there, reading something or talking on the phone, waiting for him.
"Luka, are you sure that you actually saw someone?" One of my friends asked about a week after my birthday. She was on the phone with me and I was heading downstairs, to the living room, as usual.
"Yes, I'm sure," I said into the phone. I stepped into the living room and gasped. He was outside again.
"Luka?" My friend called. I ran over to the window. The sun was shining that day. He was still hiding his face.
"He's here," I said into the phone, grunting as I forced the old window open.
"Hang up," he said softly.
I blinked. "What? Why?"
"Please."
I guess I should've gotten scared but I didn't.
"Miku, I have to go," I said before hanging up and pocketing my phone. I stared at the young man.
"Hello," he smiled.
"Why did you stop showing up?" I asked.
"Oh...so you like it when I'm here?"
I pursed my lips. "I'm curious."
"I stopped coming because you asked too many questions."
"But it's human nature," I argued. "Can I...can I please see your face?"
He didn't move. I sighed, my fingers gripping the window ledge. His expression was practically frozen.
"You seem nice," I said.
"You're lying," he said. "You don't even know me."
"I do!" I said, opening the window further. "We've spoken a few times and I want to be your friend."
"Curiosity killed the cat, Luka."
"And then there's that," I whispered. "How do you know my name and why don't I know yours?"
"I don't like my name," he said.
"Maybe I'll like it," I tried, offering a smile.
"My name is Kaito Shion," he said softly.
"Kaito..." I echoed. "I like it. It's a very nice name."
"Are you lying again, Luka?"
"No, of course not," I shook my head. "I wasn't lying before, either, you know."
He sighed and I looked down at his hands. They were very, very pale and slender. He slipped them into the pockets of his black pants.
"Kaito, can I see your face?" I asked. He laughed softly and shook his head.
"No. Not today, at least."
"B-But..." I watched as he pulled one hand out of his pocket and dipped it into the shadow of his hood. He pulled something out and gently pressed it down onto the window's ledge.
"You can keep that, if you want," he said. I looked at the ledge. There was a single strand of dark blue hair. Slowly, I pinched it between my thumb and forefinger, glancing at him.
"Why..."
"You can see my face another day," he said. "I need to go."
"Okay," I said. "W-Wait!"
He nodded. I slid my arm out of the window and reached for his face. He gasped and stepped back.
"No!" He said. "Don't. Not...not today. And please...keep your friends away, or I won't come back."
"But why?" I asked. He shook his head and walked away. "Kaito..."
I fell asleep by the window that night, leaving it open a crack. The wind gusted in as trees shook violently outside. It was around three that night when I heard his voice. It was a soft whisper.
"You're so beautiful when you're asleep."
I gasped and shot up straight, nearly falling off of the sofa. I caught his silhouette glinting in the moonlight right outside the window, where it always was. His hood wasn't pulled as far down over his face as usual, and I could see two cool, blue orbs glinting under the dark shadows cast over his pale face by his hood.
"K-Kaito?" I whispered. He nodded so slightly that I thought that I had imagined it at first. Then, he raised a hand and waggled a finger towards me. I got up and rubbed my bare arms as I approached him.
"I can't hold it back any longer," he said softly. I grabbed the bottom of my pink nightdress and tugged it down gently. "I should've shown you earlier."
"What?" I asked. He grimaced.
"My face," he said, tilting his head upwards so that our eyes could meet. "It's like my name."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I don't like it," he said.
"Maybe I will," I replied.
"That's...that's what I was thinking," he mumbled, looking down at his feet. "Are you ready?"
I nodded, quickly grabbing a chair from a few feet away and pulling it over to the window. I sat down and pressed my fingers against the window's ledge, looking at Kaito intently.
"I'm ready," I said.
He nodded and grabbed each side of his hood with each hand, slowly lifting it and pulling it back. I pressed my lips together, waiting, watching, as he revealed his face. A mop of dull, dark blue hair came into view. He dropped the hood back and shook his head slightly, letting his hair settle over his eyes, the bridge of his nose and the sides of his narrow face.
"There," he said softly, his expression grim. "Do...do you..."
"I like it," I nodded, cracking a small, friendly smile. "I don't understand, Kaito, how could you dislike your face?"
"Because," he said. "I just don't."
"Well, I do," I said, still smiling. "Kaito...did you mean what you said about me? That looked...beautiful when I'm asleep?"
"Of course I did," he said, nodding. I nodded as well, in response, looking at his face and letting his features soak into my brain. His eyes glimmered like stars and his hair was like the ocean with a blanket of stars and night sky above it. It complimented the lower half of his face perfectly and he looked very nice.
"You look beautiful, too," I whispered, slipping my fingers between the crack of the window. He looked at them and then at me. Then, he slowly brought his right hand to my fingers and brushed them with the slopes of his knuckles gently. His touch felt airy, almost. I closed my eyes and he recoiled suddenly.
"I should go," he said.
"Won't you come inside?"
"No!" He grimaced and shook his head. "I've slipped far enough...now I'm losing control. I need to go now."
"But...!" I pushed the window open and grabbed his hand. His hand felt small and weak in mine, which came to me as a surprise and I loosened my grip immediately. "Will you come back?"
"Of course I will," he said darkly. "It's not like I can stop myself anymore."
We looked at each other for a long moment. I let go of his hand and he started to walk away.
"Goodnight," I whispered. "Kaito."
"...Goodnight," I heard him call as he shuffled his feet against the path and disappeared.
I couldn't sleep well that night, or any other night, really, for at least two weeks. I didn't know what the problem was. Maybe I just wanted to see him again, but he wasn't always there.
I never actually saw him approaching my home. Sometimes, I'd go to the bathroom and when I'd return, he'd be at the window. I'd be taking a nap and he'd be waiting for me the moment I'd open my eyes.
We talked about all sorts of things but he never came into my home. He always stayed by the window when he spoke, though he took his hood off of his head when we talked.
"I baked cookies today," I told him one rainy afternoon, about a month after he had shown me his face.
"I bet they're delicious," he said.
"W-Would you like some?" I asked meekly. "I made lots!"
He shook his head. "No, thank you."
I furrowed my brow and stared at him. He slowly brought one pale finger to the window ledge and rubbed the grime and dirt off slowly. His blue eyes twinkled like the sky at dawn, the stars disappearing as the sun begins to peer out past the horizon. I sighed softly, letting myself indulge in the ethereal beauty of his facial features. His lips were a very pale pink and his skin almost seemed to glow.
"Luka," he said suddenly, meeting my gaze. "Come here."
The window was all that stood between us, really, so all I needed to do was scoot over, closer, a few inches. My face was just about pressed to the glass at that point.
"What is it, Kaito?" I asked. The glass was murky but he was still breathtaking.
He sighed softly, looking past me for a moment. "This is an old house, isn't it?"
"Hmm?" I nodded. "Yes, it's really old, apparently. My aunt bought it about five years before I was born. Apparently, some crazy woman used to live here. It gives me the creeps, really..."
"It's an old house," Kaito repeated. He looked at me. "Luka, I..."
"I know what you're thinking," I said suddenly, without really thinking twice. "Kaito..."
I grabbed the window's edges and grunted, forcing it open further. Then, I rested my chin on the ledge, looking at Kaito's face. We were inches apart and somehow, we both knew what came next. We never talked about anything like this, but somehow it was okay. The feeling was mutual.
"I like you," I whispered.
"I've loved you ever since I laid eyes on you, Luka," he exhaled, looking down at his feet. "I can't come inside, I can't..."
I cupped his face in my hands and gently pulled him forward, closing my eyes and kissing him, cutting him off. I held the kiss as he began to kiss back, his hands clasping my arms. He was so gentle, it was almost as though he wasn't there, or that he was air. I felt his lips caress mine gently, like feathers, almost. They were soft, small and cool against mine.
"Luka," he whispered against my mouth. I slowly brought my tongue to his lips and he did the same. He came closer and I kissed him harder, roughly.
Suddenly, he pulled back, his hands slipping off of my forearms. I gasped, opening my eyes, watching as he sprinted away.
"Kaito!" I yelled out, pulling myself back into the house. I ran to the door. Hurling it open, I dashed after his disappearing figure. It grew smaller and smaller. He melted into the horizon, which was spiked with trees. The forest. "Kaito! Come back!"
I followed him into the forest. The sky was dark. Thunder boomed. I panted, weaving in between trees and flora, trying to find him. My shoes were covered with dirt.
"Kaito...where are you?" I called out as thunder boomed again. Rain began to pour. "Kaito, please! I'm sorry! I shouldn't have...I shouldn't have done that!"
I huffed and continued to search for the boy, approaching the steep incline of a hill. Down below me was a large, lush and green valley. My eyes caught a glimpse of dark blue hair behind a tree trunk down below.
"Kaito," I gasped. "K-Kaito!"
I bolted down the hill, my hair soaked, my clothes heavy and wet, stuck to my figure. My eyes were set on his hair. I could see some of his pale face as well.
Suddenly, I felt something on my foot. I sucked in a breath, gasping and realizing what had happened in a split second.
Tripping. I'm...tripping....
"Ahh!" I cried out and fell into the dirt on my side, wailing broken cries as my body rolled down the hill and towards the valley. My limbs banged against trees. Branches scratched my arms and legs. My face was covered in dirt. I kept falling further and further down.
"Ugh!" I groaned, my face smashing into a tree trunk. I couldn't move. My body burned with pain. Something wet was seeping from my head, mixing with the freezing rain that drenched my figure.
"Kaito! Kaito, please, come back! Where are you, I...I love you, Kaito!"
Slowly, I slipped into unconsciousness, crying out Kaito's name one last time. The last sounds I heard were a scream and somebody calling for help.
When I opened my eyes, I was in a white room, lying on something. My body still ached. A middle aged woman with a bun of brown hair looked down at me sympathetically.
"You're awake, after almost twenty-four hours," she smiled. "Are you feeling alright?"
I groaned softly, coming to my senses.
"You were hurt," she continued. "What were you doing in the woods at a time like that, during one if the biggest thunderstorms of the decade?"
Suddenly, I remember. "K-Kaito!" I looked at the woman. She was a nurse, I realized. I was in a hospital. "Please! Y-You need to find this man, his name...his name is Kaito Shion and I..."
"Kaito Shion?" Her eyes widened the moment I mentioned the blue haired boy's name. "A woman lured him into her home. She claimed to love his name and face in particular...it was very traumatizing for the family..."
"W-What...what are you..."
"Ms. Luka Megurine," the nurse looked me right in the eyes. "Kaito Shion was murdered fifty years ago."
