(erwin x reader) aftermath

                                                                                  (Y/n)'s pov

We were greatly outnumbered, and I could feel it. Deep down. I knew this mission wasn't going to be smooth sailing as we had hoped for, and nothing, and I mean nothing could have prepared us for this. We were all taken by surprise as numerous Titans headed for us from all directions. Not much of an opening for a retreat, but Commander Smith order one, and not one person would've objected anyway. I told myself that we can make it, we've got to, but the scene around me told more truth than I wanted to believe. I watched as my comrades were plucked one by one from their horses backs by these monsterous beings. I hear their panicked, dying shrieks fill my ears, and everything seems to slow. Everything seems to slow, the Titans feast upon my comrades, the wild shouts of commanding officer, cadets whizzing through the air on their 3DMG, the faint hissing of fallen Titans as they evaporated. Everything. All at once. It hit me like a tidal wave of desperation, fear, and hopelessness. My horse continued onward at break neck speed, but I myself felt as if I were still standing in the middle of this horrid nightmare. That's when I felt it. The thundering steps of an abnormal chasing behind me, closing in with each step. Closer. Closer. Closer. Only ten meters away. "Cadet (Y/ln)! Turn around and do not look back, keep pressing forward!!!" His voice, the man I had entrusted my  life with on this mission, Commander Smith, shook me from my fear filled gaze as we all raced back to the safety of the walls. Keep going, just keep going don't even think about, just go.

The ground behind me stopped its thundering, I peered behind me, though every fiber of my being told me the sight I'd behold is not one that would ease my mind. They only stop chasing us for two reasons, either they've been killed or they found an easier, slower meal... Sadly, they'd found an easier meal, a fellow cadet, my friend, (f/n), silent tears fell as I watched as the titan devour her in a single bite. Just like that. (F/n) was merely nothing more than a lumpy form sliding down the monster's throat.

So few of us left....

"ONWARD, THE WALL IS ONLY 300 YARDS AWAY, KEEP PRESSING FORWARD TEAM!" Commander Smith shouted as he guided his horse closer to mine. I looked at the man beside me, his features were mixed with determination to get as much of his team as he could back home alive and pure terror at how fast this mission went into chaos. Even as his features portrayed his emotions, he never lost his composure as he shouted words of reassurance to those around him. I averted my gaze from the man at my side to the wall that was drawing nearer and nearer, I sped up faster, passing my commander, THAT'S IT KEEP GOING (F/N), I kept mentally reassuring myself as the most unthinkable happened. My horse tripped, it rolled, with me still mounted on her. Again, all noise faded away as I only heard the sound of my leg snapping at the weight of my horse landing on it, and my scream that followed.  A scream of both pain and dismay, I knew I was going to die. No one saves anyone in situations like these, only the ones who are willing to risk their life for someone they really love. I closed my tearful eyes accepting my fate, crying harder as I felt myself being lifted from my position on the ground. "Commander Smith, I am so sorry, I have disappointed you."I let go of conciousness with that as my goodbye.

Instead of feeling a wet slimy tongue beneath me, I felt the familiar feeling of horse hair, and the faint scent of citris and pine and a strong arm wrapped around me. I opened my eyes to see buildings, kids running through the street shouting and waving at the returning soldiers. I WAS BACK IN THE WALLS! But how? I looked up to see who's arm was wrapped around me, who had saved me. "Good to see you're finally awake (y/n)." My savior, Commander Smith greeted me with a warm smile. I was in disbelief, why would the commander jepardize his own life to save mine?

The whole ride back to the base I thought to myself of all possible reasons he could have had to save me. A random cadet greeted us, I had assumed he was there to carry me to the infirmary. Cadet, hold on to her as I get down, drop her and Corporal Ackermans punishments will just be a grain of dirt on the ground compared to what I will do The bewildered cadet held me as if I were a delicate flower. Commander Smith got off his horse with ease then gently lifted me into his arms. So careful. I winced in pain as he placed an arm under my injured leg. As he carried me to the infirmary, all eyes of every by passer were on us, I looked away from their gazes up to the man who was carrying me. His eyes are so beautiful, he truly is a handsome man, but he is my commanding officer. Weakly, I spoke up to him, Commander Smith, why are you being so kind to me? Why not save yourself the trouble earlier and let the cadet carry me? He kept walking silently for a bit, then took a deep breath, slowly releasing it as we entered the infirmary. (y/n), we all have a weakness. We are all human, we all feel, live, breathe, and die. But today out on that field, as that titan stalked you, I felt myself become weak. I couldnt bear the thought of you dying. Over the years youve been a part of us, Ive watched you progress into an amazing soldier and friend to all, even Levi likes you. I feel as if I may feel something more for you, I believe I love you. Its terrifying to say that in the world and lifestyle we live in, but I do. In the aftermath of all this chaos we see daily, the one thing that seemed to give me clarity was knowing that you are still here, and I would like a chance to show you just how much you do mean to me. I had grown silent, I could not believe what I heard, the man who lead an army of titan killing machines and had faced many of those monsters himself, saw you, a simple cadet as his weakness, his love. C-Commander Smith, I- Please call me Erwin, he said as he placed me down gently on a cot. Erwin, I never thought you would like someone like me, never in my life. Id be honored to be yours. He smiled softly, relief and joy filled his features as bent down to kiss my cheek. I smiled weakly as I felt myself getting drowsy. I felt his hand softly stroke my hair as my eyes fluttered close and I fell into a soft slumber.
