Chapter 4
Piper's P.O.V.
"Your results show that you're Divergent," Katelyn, my Amity test administrator, tells me.
I narrow my eyes. "You won't spill this to everyone, will you?"
"Of course not!" she says, appalled. "People like Jeanine Matthews have always wanted to kill off 'our kind'.
I breathe a sigh of relief. "You're Divergent?"
"Yes, but don't spill this to everyone." Katelyn winks.
"So which factions could I consider choosing?"
"Amity, Dauntless, or Abnegation. I'll put Amity results in the computer."
"Thanks," I reply, and walk myself out.
Leo's P.O.V.
In the simulation, I'd let the dog sniff me, then put the girl on my shoulders and left the building. When the man interrogated me, I lied and pretended I didn't know him.
When it ends, an Erudite guy stares at me coldly. Run, I think.
"I'm going to report your Divergence to Jeanine Matthews right away," he says. And then I light my hand on fire. "Do that, and get your face melted off," I growl.
The guy lets me pass.
I hurry down the hall to meet my friends.
Frank's P.O.V.
When the dog attacked, I turned into a dog just as big and met its blows with blows of my own, all the while protecting that poor little girl. The room changed, and a man asked me if I knew a mass murderer that looked familiar. I told him the truth, naturally. Romans don't lie.
I am back in the testing room. My test administrator, a woman from Candor named Felischa, stares at me open mouthed.
"I won't tell anyone," she promises. "Be careful. You're dismissed."
So I exit the room and run to my friends.
Hazel's P.O.V.
When the dog chased me, I threw the hunk of cheese at it. It shimmered and disappeared, and I found myself in another room, this one much darker. A man questioned me, and I told him the truth. After all, I was taught to never lie.
My eyes flutter open, and my Amity test administrator is grading the test, not surprised at all. "Divergent. Be careful, lassie. Divergence is dangerous around these parts."
I nod. She looks up from her computer and stares at me, a sadness in her eyes. "You're welcome to choose any faction, but your results were Amity, Dauntless, and Candor."
"Thank you," I say. As I turn to leave, she murmurs, "They're always so young when they die."
My heart fills with dread.
