Chapter 8: The Body

Hopper showed up a few minutes ago to tell Mom and Jonathan about Will. I watched as he looked at the Christmas lights and the ABC's painted on the wall. Watched as he explained that Will was dead, and as always Mom didn't believe him. Instead she went on a rant about how he was talking to her.
"It's after him. We have to find him." Mom pleaded. "It was almost human but it wasn't. It had these long arms and it didn't have a face."
"Didn't have a face." Hopper muttered.
I ran to my room and shut the door. Curling up on my bed, I grabbed my teddy bear and cried into it.
Will was dead. Why couldn't Mom realize that? He wasn't coming back, they fished his body out of the quarry. I saw them do it. There was no monster. Just the fact that Will had fallen into the quarry. Eleven was wrong and she gave us all false hope. That's the extant of it.
A soft knock on the door caused me to look up. "Come in." I called weakly.
Jonathan opened the door and came to my bedside. He didn't say anything just sat down and wrapped his arms around me.
I gladly accepted the embrace and leaned into him.
"We'll make it through this, Kass." Jonathan whispered.
"Promise, Jon?"
"I promise."

.......

"Mama." I shook her. "Mama, get up."
"Mom!" Jonathan tried more harsh.
Mom opened her eyes with a start. "What-What time is it?"
"It's almost eight." He answered. "We have to go."
"Go where? Where?" Joyce shook her head, her voice sounding far away.
"To see Will." Jon stated.
The older Byer's woman got up and went to change, before grabbing her keys and heading straight to the door. "Well come on." She motioned for us to come.
"Well I'm not coming." I sighed, leaning against the door frame.
"What?" Mom exclaimed. "He's your brother."
"Yeah, but, Mom, Kassy can't go with us. It's not a good idea." Jonathan answered for me. "The doctor called last night and warned us about her coming.
"Fine then," She threw her arms in the air. "Just come on we're going to be late, Jonathan."
I waved as the pulled out of the driveway and onto the road.
I'd just shut the door and walked back inside when the walkie-talkie went off. "Kassidy, are you there. Over" Lucas's voice drifted through the room.
I snatched the device. "I'm here. Over."
"Mike wants all of us at his house now. It's about Will. Over"
"About Will?" I mused. "Alright let me change and I'll be there. Over and out." I threw the walkie-talkie down and went to get dressed. Stripping out of my pajama's I quickly pulled on a sweater and jeans.

.......

We sat on the floor of Mike's basement surrounding the tent made for El.
Eleven was playing with Mike's walkie-talkie trying to get 'Will' in.
'We keep losing the signal but you heard it right?" Mike asked.
"Heard what?" I inquired. "All I heard was noise."
"Yeah I heard a baby." Lucas said.
I nodded in agreement. "It did sorta sound like a baby."
"What?"
"Listen you probably tapped into a baby monitor." Lucas tried.
"Like the Blackburn's baby. They have monitors everywhere for him." I stated.
"Did that sound like a baby to you." Mike remarked. "That was real."
"Mike, come on." I sighed. "This isn't funny."
"You two don't understand he spoke last night. Words. He was singing that weird song he loves. Even El heard him." He was trying so hard to make us believe this bull.
"Yeah, if the she heard him then it has to be true." I scoffed.
Dustin asked something about a channel.
Is he seriously believing this?
"I don't think it's about a channel." Mike looked toward the box. "I think somehow she's channeling him."
"Like Professor X." Dustin sound astonished and amazed.
I rolled my eyes. Why must he be like this?
"Are you actually believing this crap." Lucas voiced the question I'd been thinking.
"Well, I don't know. I mean you remember when Will fell off his bike and broke his finger? He sounded a lot like that." Dustin defended.
I thought back. Will was ten when he broke his finger and I guess he did sound like what we'd just heard. Could it all be true? Could Will be alive?
I'd zoned out, a result of once again not taking my medicine. But when I zoned back in Lucas was saying: "He's DEAD!"
Dustin looked hurt by what he'd said. Quite frankly they all did, I wondered what he'd said before then, truthfully hearing him say it with that much force hurt me too.
"What if it's his ghost." Dustin said with a grin, making me smile.
I hugged him from the side. "Always the optimist."
"If it wasn't then what was in that water?"
"I don't know, I'll I know is Will is alive. Will is ALIVE!" Mike told Lucas. "He's out there somewhere all we have to do is find him."
We all looked from him to El.
"This isn't going to work we need to get El to a stronger radio." Mike sighed.
"What about the science teacher's AV thing." I suggested.

"Don't tell me you're buying this, Kass." Lucas said dully.
I nodded. "I think I am. I believe Mike, and if he says he heard Will then he really did." I stated. "End of story."
"I hate to break it to you, but the Heathkit is at school and there's no we're going to get the weirdo in without people noticing." Lucas had a valid point.
We all looked down. "I mean look at her." He finished.
I look up quickly. "We can dress her up." I said. "You know do a makeover on her. Make her look normal."
"Like you and Nancy used to do to us?" Mike groaned.
"Exactly." I clapped my hand. "Mike take El up to Nancy's room and find her makeup." I thought better of what I said and added. "If she comes down looking like a clown I'll personally kill you."
Mike smiled and led El upstairs. The rest of us sorted through boxes of Nancy's old clothes.
The boys pulled out lots of different items of clothing before finding a baby pink long sleeve dress and a blonde shoulder length wig. They turned and looked at each other before looking at me.
I smiled and gave a thumbs up. "Good job, guys."
We went upstairs and waited with Mike as El changed. She came out a moment later and to be honest she looked pretty, but I thought she looked pretty before.
"Wow."
"She looks-"
"Pretty." The words seemed to fall out out Mike's mouth, making me grin even bigger. He was so inlove. "Good. Pretty good." He added, realizing his mistake.
El walked to the mirror and repeated his words.

.......

"Remember if anyone sees us look sad." Mike ordered.
We had arrived at the school just in time for the bell to go off and the principal to announce something about an assembly for Will. El looked freaked out be the noise so I kept a hand on her back, telling her it was okay.
Mike tried the door to the AV club. "It's locked."
"Hey do you think you can open it with your powers?" Dustin asked her.
Eleven looked at him like he was dumb but did say a thing.
"Dustin, she's not a pet." I laughed.
"Boys!" Mr. Clark said making us all jump and turn toward him. "And Kassidy, still failing science?"
"Oh no, Sir." I lied, looking down at my shoes.
He ignored me. "Assembles about to start."
"We know. We're just-" Mike looked down a look of sadness falling over him.
"Upset." Lucas added.
"Yeah definitely upset." Did I mention Dustin isn't too good at on the spot things. He normally freezes up.
"We just need some alone time-" Mike said.
"To cry." Dustin finished.
"Listen I get it. I do. I know how hard this is, but let's just be there for Will." Mr. Clark said softly. "And then," He dug something out of his pocket, and tossed it at Mike. "The Heathkit is all yours for the rest of the day. Would do you say?"
Before anyone could respond he noticed Eleven. "I don't believe we've met, what's your name?"
El looked unsure of what to do but answered anyway. "Elev-"
"Eleanor." Mike spoke over her.
"She's Mike's cousin." I stated.
"Second cousin." Dustin added holding up two finger.
"She's here for Will's funeral." Mike explained.
"Well welcome to Hawkins middle school, Eleanor. I wish you were here under better circumstances."
"El looked back at all of us before answering: "Thank you." She nodded her head.
Mr. Clark looked strange. "Where are you from exactly?" Gosh can't he stop with the questions.
"Bad place." She answered.
"Sweden." Dustin covered covered.
"I have a lot of Swedish family." Mike commented.
"She hates it there." Lucas said.
"It's too cold." I thought fast.
"Subzero." Dustin agreed.
Mr. Clark didn't looked satisfied, I think he knew we were lying. "Shall we?"
"Yep." Lucas moved out of the doorway quickly.
Dustin slammed the doors open causing everyone to look at us. "Abort." He whispered, backing up into Lucas.
I sat next to El as the principal droned on.
"Kass." Eleven touched my arm.
"Yeah, El?" I looked down at her.
"They don't really care."
"I know, El, but it gets them out of class."
"Class?"
"I'll explain later." I said with a smile.
She nodded and went back to looking around.
My headache had intensified ten times since we got here. I swear I could hear other people's voices, but no one was talking.
Eleven leaned forward past Mike and looked down at Troy and James who were snickering like five year old girls, and mocking everything the principal was saying. "Mouth breather." She whispered and sat back.
El looked over at me and I smiled. "Good use of the word." I whispered, causing her to smile.
The bell rang and students started getting up.
"Hey," Mike started walking faster. "Hey, Troy!" Troy turned to face him. "You think this is funny?" Mike asked.
"What'd you say Wheeler?" Troy demanded.
"I-I saw you guys laughing over there, and I think that's a real messed up thing to do."
"Did you listen to the counselor, Wheeler, grief shows itself in funny ways." Troy sneered. "Besides what's there to be sad about," Troy cast a glance up at me and almost looked scared but he spoke nevertheless. "Will's in fairyland now. Flying around with all the other little fairies all happy and gay." They laughed and sang a melody.
I glared at Troy. God how could someone like him be aloud to breathe. "You're pathetic, Troy"
As they started to leave Mike ran after them, pushing Troy down.
"You're dead, Wheeler, dead!" Troy threaten, but froze before he could ever reach him.
My eyes widened as I watched Troy began to pee himself.
A kid in the crowd announced it and everyone started to laugh, but my attention turned to Eleven who wore a smug smile and wiped under her nose, turning away.
Lucas grabbed Mike and we all took off for the AV room.
"That was awesome." I hugged El.
She hugged me back with a smile. "Thanks." She said quietly.
I was beginning to really like this little girl.
El sat down in the chair in front of the radio.
"Now what?"
"She'll find him, right El?" Mike started turning knobs.
"Of course she will." I had no doubt she couldn't do it.
She closed her eyes and began to concentrate.
"She's finding him."
"This is crazy." Dustin looked amazed at it all.
"Calm down. She just closed her eyes." Lucas had to be a downer.
The light bulb broke overhead.
"Holy-"
Sound started to come through the radio.
"What the heck is that?"
"Mom." It was Will's voice. "Mom!"
"No way." Lucas looked up.
I got closer to the equipment. "This is absolutely Hitchcock."
"Mom." He repeated. "Mom!" He sounded more urgent.
"Will." We all started trying to talk to him.
"Why can't he hear us?" Lucas asked.
"I don't know." Mike replied.
"It's coming." Will shouted afraid. "It's like home, but it's so dark. It's so dark and empty and cold." He paused then continued to shout Mom.
I wondered if Mom was on the other end actually talking to him.
The Heathkit caught fire, and Dustin went to get a something to put it out as the sirens came on.
Eleven looked pretty bad.
"El, you okay?" Mike asked her.
She only looked at him dazed like.
"Here." I went to help him with her.
We left the school as quick as possible.
"You did really good, El." I bent down so we were eye level. "You found him."
She wrapped her arms weakly around me and sighed. "You're nice."
