Chapter 7: Jane?
"Where am I?" A seven-year-old me sat up quickly, glancing nervously around.
The room was abnormally cold and completely white. The walls, the bed, the sink, the door, everything was a brilliant white color. The door, however was slightly cracked open.
"Hello!" I called out. "Is anyone out there?"
"Kassy," The door opened fully revealing a tall, slender older man with white-everything is white, I swear-hair. "I was afraid you weren't going to wake up." He admitted, coming to sit beside me on the small bed.
"Why am I here, Doctor Brenner." I asked. Last thing I remember I was at school talking with Lily and Carol.
"You slipped and hit your head pretty hard on a rock." Brenner explained. "Joyce brought you directly here afterwards."
I sat up further and smiled weakly. My head hurt like heck. "Have I been here long?"
Doctor Brenner smiled. "You ask a lot of questions, little one." He stood up. "But to answer that question; you've been here about two hours."
"I missed the rest of school." I mumbled, pushing my hair back. "So will I at least live?" I joked.
"You know the answer to that already." He headed toward the door. "You coming?" He asked.
I got up quickly. "To where?" Before he could reply I was out the door and halfway down the hall.
"Kassidy!" He yelled after me. "Slow down or you'll get yourself hurt."
"No I won't." I yelled back over my shoulder.
I stopped outside a big door with a 'QUIET CHILD MAY BE SLEEPING' sign posted on it, and waited for the older man to catch up.
"Has she learned anything new?" I inquired excitedly, the pain of the headache now suddenly gone.
"A few small things." Brenner smiled before opening the door and motioning for me to in.
I nod and step inside. A small child around the age of three sat in a rocking chair being read to by a nurse. The adorable little girl sucked happily on a pacifier as the nurse rocked slowly.
"Jane!" I squealed, making both the nurse and child turn to look at me.
"What's going on!" The nurse demanded. She obviously didn't look happy and her voice reflected the annoyance. "I'm never going to be able to be her down for a nap if you keep interrupting me." She snapped.
Jane looked quizzically up at her nurse and a frown could be made out under her pacifier.
"Remember who works for who." Brenner warned. "As for her nap, I suppose she won't have one today."
"No nap!" The nurse scoffed. "You wanna not give her a nap that's fine with me, but you have to deal with her when she gets fussy."
Brenner nodded and with that the nurse got up, set the Jane down in the chair, handed her the story book, and left.
"I don't like her." I stated, walking up to the rocking chair.
"I don't either, but Jane seems to so she stays." He agreed.
"Hello, Jane." I bent down to the toddler's level.
"Kass!" Jane said happily, dropping the paci in the procese. She jumped at me.
I caught her and spun her in the air. "How's my baby?" I asked with a giant smile.
Jane only giggled in response, hugging me closer.
"I'll leave you two alone." Doctor Brenner went to leave. "Only a hour though, okay, Kassy? I have to call Joyce and tell her you're awake after that."
I nodded. "Thanks, Brenner." I then looked down at the kid in my arms. "Tell Papa bye, Jane."
"B-bye, Papa." Jane repeated and waved as he left.
"You want to read a story?" I sat down in the rocking chair that the nurse had been in and grabbed the book.
Jane nodded quickly, sending brown strands everywhere.
I laughed as she tugged on her own hair. "Hair." She sounded almost disgusted about the matter.
But all seemed to fade as she saw the book. "Book." She clapped her hands together.
"Okay." I opened the book and flipped to the first page. "Once upon a time there was a little girl who fell down the rabbit hole, and went to a magical land." I began. The story was Alice and her adventures in wonderland. I loved that story and so did she.
I'd been reading for a while, when I noticed Jane had stilled. I glanced down to see she was fast asleep, a small smile peeking out from her paci.
I kissed the top of her head. "Good night, Jane."
