Chapter 5: What in the Name of Steven Spielberg

"Jon?" We were halfway to Lonnie's and he hadn't said a word since we got in the car.
The only answer I got was him turning up the radio. Should I Stay or Should I Go by the Clash drifted through the air.
For some reason this was always Will's favorite song. Smiling I thought back to the last time I heard it.

"Can you turn up the music, Kassy?" Will asked. We were standing in the kitchen making lunch.
I obliged and turned the radio louder. In the radio was some cassette Jonathan had given him.
"I heard Lonnie's suppose to take you out next week." I said, handing him the plates.
"Yeah, but I don't want to go." He answered.
"Why not?" Sure I didn't like Lonnie, but that was no reason that Will shouldn't like his father. I mean he was still young.
"I don't know." He sighed. "We just never do anything fun." Will walked back to stove. "I rather stay here or go hang out with the guys than go with him."
"Then don't go." I turned to him. "You shouldn't have to go anywhere you don't want to."
Will smiled. "Thanks, Kassy." He suddenly hugged me. "I love you, sissy."
"I love you too, kid." I kissed the top of his head. "Let's go see if Jonathan wants lunch." He nodded and we set out to find our older brother.

I was brought out of thought by the engine shutting off. Looking up, I realized we were here. We were at Lonnie's house. Jonathan quickly got out and I followed close behind. "So what exactly are we going to do?" I asked.
No response yet again only a sad look. He knocked rapidly at the door. "Hello."
A young woman opened the door, she was maybe early thirties. "Can I help you?" She demanded.
"Yeah is Lonnie here?" He questioned.
"Yeah he's out back what do you want?" She annoyingly asked, chomping down on bubblegum.
"To look around." Jonathan pushed past her.
"Hey you can't-"
"Save it, lady." I commented as he mumbles something about being fast.
She grabbed my wrist. "What do you two want? This is trespassing ya know."
"It's not if your family." I sneered, gripping my wrist from her and heading toward one of the rooms. "Will." I called and opened one room. "Will, you in there!"
Jonathan was doing the same a couple feet away, when someone threw him against the opposite wall.
"Hey!" I yelled, pulling at the man.
"Get off." Jonathan pushed him away.
Lonnie cussed. "You've gotten stronger." He then cast a glance at me. "Wish I could say the same for you."

Before I could answer the lady from earlier came up. She threw her arms out in a questioning position as she spoke. "Will someone please explain what the heck is going on?" She asked.
Lonnie looked from us to her and back. "Jonathan, Kassidy, this is Cynthia. Cynthia, this is Jonathan my oldest and Kassidy the freak we adopted." He introduced.
His words no longer hurt me as they used to.
"Come 'mer." He tried to hug us both.
"Get away from me." I swatted and ducked under his arm.
"Get off. Get off me." Jon pushed him away again, and grabbed my hand. "Come on, Kass." He lead me outside and toward Lonnie's car.
Lonnie was droning about his car as Jon went to check the truck. "Really you wanna check up-"
I cut him off. "Shut it."
"Oh, please, you suspect that I took Will when Kassy was the last person with him?" Lonnie chuckled. "Everyone knows she's a freak on meds to think straight she probably killed him and don't remember." He was stone cold serious, and I'd had enough.
"Listen, Lonnie, I know you don't think a lot of me, but I loved my little brother." I took a step toward him. "I wouldn't ever hurt him, but you oh I'd hurt you in a heartbeat." I threatened.
"Is that so, Kassidy Ives?" Lonnie said my name as if it were some dangerous horrible word. "Tell me then you off of the medication yet?"
"No, but I did miss my dose today." I replied, this made Lonnie pale a little and stepped back almost like he was scared of me.
"I told you the same thing I told those cops, he's not here and he never has been." He said.

"Then why not tell us?" I asked. "Tell Mom."
"I assumed she just forgot where he was. Ya know he was lost or something." Responded the older Byers.
"Then why not tell us that." I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "He's gone, really gone, Lonnie."
Lonnie went on about Joyce never being able to take care of herself.
Jonathan started explaining about what the town and police were doing.
"Hopper isn't still chief, is he."
"Of course he is." I laughed.
Lonnie said something about moving, how people were more real in the city, and how he could see us more.
But I wasn't listening to a word of it. "You don't care about any of us." I sighed.
"You think I don't want to see you?" He inquired.
"Correct." I said at the same time Jon said, "I know you don't."
"That's your mother talking, well Jonathan's mother that is." He said pointedly. "Does she even know you two are here?"
Neither of us answered.
"Great so one kid goes missing, and the other two run wild." Lonnie sighed. "Look maybe I'm not the butthole in all this."
Jonathan approached his father and shoved something at his chest. "In case you forgot what he looks like." With that Jon stormed off.
Lonnie looked up from the picture as I went by, catching my arm in the process. "If you did anything to my son, you little freak, I-"
I cut him off again. "You'll be the last to know." I yanked my arm free. "Goodbye, Lonnie."
Cynthia stalked up Lonnie as I walked away. "They're kinda cute. Maybe I tried you in for the younger model, either of 'em."

......

I'd just gotten ready to go to Steve's-I didn't feel like a party, but I said I'd go so-when there was a knock on the door. "Just a second." I called, making my way to it.

On the other side of the door stood a upset looking Dustin.
"Need something, Dustin?" I asked, slightly worried.
He nodded furiously. "Come with me quickly."
"Why? What's wrong?"
"We.. We found a weird girl in the woods last night, and Mike won't let us get rid of her." He rushed out. "Now come on, Kassy, we gotta go."
"Okay, I'm coming." Closing and locking the door, I followed him back to Mike's house.
"Go through up top." He ordered.
I nodded. and ran to the door, knocking twice. "Hello, Kassidy." Karen greeted me with a warm smile. "Did the boys call you?"
I nod as she lets me in.
"They're in the basement, go on down." She informed.
"Thanks." I slipped into the basement.
"I had to call her." I hear Dustin explain.
"Call who?" Mike asked.
"Kassy." Lucas replied. "Because she's the only one who will know what to do about the weirdo." He added.
"What? how could you d-"
I guess by fully entering the room I cut Mike off.
"Okay, so why am I here?" I asked.
"Because of that." Lucas pointed over at a girl on the couch.
"Her name's Eleven." Mike said. "We call her El."
"Like the number?" I laughed, thinking they had to be pulling a prank.
"Like the number." Dustin sighed. "She can move stuff with her mind."
I bent down on the ground next to Eleven to get a better look. She had on clothes that didn't quite fit and a buzz cut in stead of hair. Something about her looked familiar though. "Hello, El." I said calmly. "I'm Kassy."
"Bad." She mumbled backing away from me. "Very bad." She looked frightened almost terrified of me.
"Bad?" I mumbled. "Why'd she say bad?"
"Bad like bad people?" Mike asked.
Eleven nodded. "Yes."
"She's not bad." Lucas stated. "She's Kassy."

"Hurt me." El whispered, looking away from me to Mike.
I reached a hand up to touch hers. "I'm not a bad person, El."
She jerked away at my touch. "Left me." She managed, before starting to freak out.
"What's she talking about!" I demanded. I'd never met her in my life.
"She's saying you're one of the bad people." Mike answered skeptically.
"I'm not." I stood up and walked a little ways away from the girl who was still saying bad and freaking out. The worse part is I could tell Mike was starting to believe her.
"Mike, you know she's not right, right?"
"I don't know, Kassidy, she looks really upset." Mike looks at the floor as he speaks.
"Come on, man, you've known her all your life. You really think she could be bad." Dustin defended.
"I don't know that, Dustin, there's a lot she hides from us." Mike countered.
"Well you know what until you decide to come to your senses I'm gonna leave." I walked to the basement door and threw it open. "I'm not going to stand here while you do this."
I left, but instead of going home I leaned back against the side of the Wheeler's house, it'd started to rain lightly.
What the heck just happened. How'd Mike know I kept things from them? Or more importantly why would he believe her over me? And who and or what the heck is she?
I needed my mind off of what'd happened, so I headed toward Steve's house. Sure it was all a rouse to get Nancy in his house, but at least there would be alcohol.

............

When I arrived most of them had gone upstairs already. I waved hi to Barb before opening the door.
Lily laid curled up on the couch watching some TV show.
"Hey, Lil." I said softly, incase she was asleep.
Lily sat up. "I thought something happened when you didn't show up." She patted the seat next to her. "Come sit."
Lily and I had been friends for as long as I could remember. We were never apart even the few times I was hospitalized she was right there beside me.
"How was the party? I'm guessing Steve's plan worked?" I asked, laying my head on her shoulder.
She wrapped an arm around me. "Of course his plan worked." She laughed. "Poor Nancy." Lily shook her head, causing her ponytails to hit her face and mine.
"Yep poor little Wheeler." I agreed.
