Chapter 4: The Weirdo on Maple Street

"Why can't I go with Jonathan?" I complained. Jonathan was going to the copier to make copies of Will's missing posters, and I was having to go to school.
"Because, honey, you missed school yesterday." Mom sighed. "Okay now how much money is it?" She asked then babbled on about how she'd go but someone should stay here. Neither of us get a word in edge wise with their mom. That is until Hopper showed up.
Mom opened the door quickly. "I've been waiting six hours!" She exclaimed.
"I know I came as soon as I could." Hopper tried.
Joyce mentioned about how long it'd been again.
Hopper said something then sighed. "I've been searching all night, went all the way to Cartersville."
"Did you find him?!" I asked, jumping in the conversion.
"Sorry, kid."
Joyce let out a cry as I fell back into Jonathan. I felt responsible for leaving him alone that night.
"Phyllis said you got a phone call." Hopper stated.
"Yeah." Mom led him to the phone.
"Storm barbecued this good."He commented looking at it.
"I'm going to get dressed." I mumbled to Jonathan.
I wanted nothing more than for all this to be a dream, a terrible nightmare. I shouldn't havw left him that night. With a sigh, I went to find my medication, but came up empty. It wasn't in the cabinet where I always left it.
"Mom, have you seen..." I trailed off, wondering if the chief was still there. I knew he suspected me as the murder, I know everyone does.
My door threw open a moment later and Jonathan stood there looking kinda mad.
"Jon," I touched his arm. "Jon, what's wrong?"
"Hopper won't let me go to Lonnie's, but I am, Kassidy." Jonathan rushed out. "I'm going to see Lonnie, and I want you to come with me." He looked deadly serious, and frankly it terrified me.
"Jonathan, think about this a second...." A sharp pain shooting through my head cut off my words, almost doubling over in pain. "Alright, we'll go to Lonnie's together." I choked out, then rushed out of the room mumbling something about going to be late on the way past him.
"I'm headed to school now, Mom." I called from halfway out the door, completely forgetting about my meds.
But before I could even make it down the driveway I felt sick. Quickly finding a bucket, I threw up, and afterwards I felt just fine.
Making to the curb, a car pulled up in front of me. "Hey, Kass, ya ready?" Steve asked.
"Yeah, Kassy, ya ready to go ta school?" Carol asked sarcastically from the backseat.
"Oh shut it, Carol, and go back to making out with Tommy." I playfully snapped at the redhead.
Back in elementary school Carol had braces, pigtails, and big black glasses. It was funny to see her now. But nevertheless she was still my geeky friend.
"You've used that same comeback since we were in third grade, girl." Tommy laughed.
"No actually I haven't." I turned to face the back as Steve pulled back onto the road. "It used to be 'shut up, Tommy, and go back to eating paste.' and 'Shush, Car, go back to your book'." I smirked and turned back around, causing Lily to laugh. "So how'd your 'study' date with Wheeler go last night?"
Steve's grin grew. "Amazing."
"Gross, Harrington, no wants to know what happened." Lily said. "And that creepy smile gives it all away."
"Love you too, Lils." Steve blew her a kiss.
Ten minutes later we arrived at school. Steve got out first and the rest of us followed shortly after.

*********

I went to bathroom and leaned my head against a mirror, bracing my hands on the sink. A killer headache had formed on the way over here, just a small reminder that I hadn't taken my prescription today. In fact I don't remember missing a day since I got the medicine.
"Are you alright?" A voice asked from behind me.
I smiled weakly at Barb through the mirror. "I'm good, Barb."
She nodded and went to wash her hands. One of her hands had a pretty deep cut on it and she seemed to be in pain.
"I'll see ya around." I said and left.
Standing in front of my locker were five familiar teens: Steve, Carol, Lily, Tommy, Nancy, and Barb... wait Barb? How did she beat me here?
"Come on, it'll be lowkey. It'll just be us." Steve tried to convince the brunette. "Are you in or are you out?"
"I never agreed to a party, Lily." I whispered to the blonde.
"I know, sweetheart."She whispered back.
Nancy made a noise and opened her mouth, but before she could speak Carol cut her off. "Oh God." She groaned. "Look."
We all turned to see what she was looking at. It was Jonathan hanging up a poster.
"Oh, God, that's depressing." Steve commented.
"Should we say something?" Nancy asked.
"I don't think he speaks." Carol replied.
"What do you wanna bet he killed him?" Tommy said with a goofy grin.
Steve pushed him. "Shut up!"
"Tommy, shut it that's not nice!" The blonde hit his arm roughly.
"Guys!" I demanded. "That's my brother you're talking about!" I hated when they talked like this about Jonathan.
"Sorry, Kassy, it's hard to remember you're siblings sometimes." Tommy apologized. "It's just you don't act like them."
I nod and watch as Nancy goes to talk to my brother.
The bell rings and everyone started to file into classes.
"You coming Kass?" Jonathan asked, slightly unamused. He never liked my choice of friends.
"Yeah, I am." I gathered my stuff and followed him out.
To the biggest jerk in the world's home we go!
