Chapter 10: Learning New Things
"Can you tie my tie?" Jonathan asked, after moments messing with it.
"Yeah, sure." I stepped in front of him, working quick.
"You look pretty." Jon complimented, pulling me into a hug.
I practically melted against him. "Thanks.

The funeral was just that, a funeral. A boring, sad meaningless gathering.
Afterwards Jonathan pulled me away, and led me to where Nancy sat against the fence.
"What's she doing here?" Nancy questioned.
"Coming to join the hunt." I sat on one side of her and Jonathan sat on the other. "Besides I know more about this than both of you combined." I shrugged.
Jonathan pulled out a map. "This is where we know it's been, right?" He asked.
"So that's..." Nancy began.
"Steve's house." Jon finished.
Clearly they had been working on this a while. I watched them carefully. "It's close distance." I observed. "That means it must live in that little area."
"About a mile." Jonathan nodded.
"You want to go out there?" Nancy asked.
"We might not find anything." He warned.
"I found something." Nancy contradicted.
"I did as well." I agreed. "But if we see it?"
"Then what?" Nancy added on.
Jonathan sighed. "We kill it."
And just like that it was settled. We were going out there.
Jon broke into Lonnie's car and stole his gun, saying something to Nancy about taking pictures.
Hey, I mean, Lonnie said he was here to help, right?
"This is a terrible idea." Nancy reminded.
"It may be, but it's the only one we got. People aren't going to believe three high school students saying they saw a monster." I said.
Nancy nodded, but then her and Jon began to argue about telling Joyce. The decision came to not telling her until the monster was dead.
We separated to change, but agreed to meet at the clearing.
Jonathan and I beat her there. I took the gun first, firing two shots and knocking the cans down.
"Dang you are scary good at this." Jonathan commented. "Hey did you take your meds this morning?" He looked at me concerned.
I shook my head slightly, firing the gun again. "No, and I have a killer headache."
He took the gun and began to shoot, missing the cans completely.
"You're suppose to hit the cans, right?" Nancy asked sarcastically, as she approached us.
Jonathan smiled a small smile. "No, actually, you see the spaces in between the cans? I'm aiming for those." He replied.
Nancy nodded. "Ah." She looked over at me. "And you?"
"Perfect aim." I shrugged. "Teach the mental girl to fire a gun properly is a high priority." I said, earning a laugh from the brunette girl
"You ever shot a gun before?" Jonathan changed the subject.
Nancy laughed softly. "Have you met me parents?"
"Yeah, I haven't shot one since I was ten." Jonathan said, while reloading the gun. "My dad took me hunting for my birthday. He made me kill a rabbit." Jonathan told.
"A rabbit." Nancy sounded sad at that.
"I guess he thought it would make me more of a man or something." He paused, and I tried not to laugh at what was coming next. "I cried for a week."
"He really did. He would come into my room sobbing cause he used to call me bunny as a kid, and apologise for killing it." I confirmed.
"Jesus." Nancy cursed quietly.
"What? I'm a fan of Thumper." Jonathan defended.
Nancy smiled. "I meant your dad."
"Guess he and my mother loved each other at some point, but I wasn't around for that." He finally finished loading the gun, and Nancy reached for it.
"I don't think they loved each other ever. I think Joyce got suckered into it." I sighed.
Nancy began to say almost the same thing about her parents as I had his.
She hit the can with amazing aim.
It was decided at that moment she would be the one to carry the gun.

We were currently walking through the woods, and they were discussing a picture he took.
I felt sorta out of place as they started arguing about Steve.
"Yesterday with the camera he's not like that. He was just being protective." Nancy explained.
I knew the side of Steve she was talking about. The Steve that threaten to beat Miles to a pulp last year for looking at me 'wrong'.
"Wait, what happened with your camera?" I cut in.
Ignoring me, they continued their conversation.
I watched from farther back, feeling like the third wheel in TV shows and movies.
Jonathan soon stormed off, leaving Nancy and I behind.
"How can he hate Steve so much when you're his sister and Steve is your best friend?" Nancy asked me.
"Jonathan never liked Steve, Nancy, even when we were little. But he doesn't like most people." I answered.
"So did he really used to call you Bunny?" Nancy questioned with a laugh.
I nodded. "He sure did. Like he said he was a big fan of Thumper growing up." I laughed.
"That's adorable." Nancy smiled. "You know, you aren't so bad, Kassy."
"Either are you, Nanc."
"This may be the beginning of a friendship." She laughed.
"I do believe so." I smiled. "Now let's go catch up with Jon before he gets lost." I suggested.
Nancy grabbed my hand. "Let's go."

It was now dark outside, and we had been walking awhile when Nancy stopped.
"What are you tired?" Jonathan asked.
"Shut up."
"What."
A noise came from the left.
"Shut up." This time just as quietly spoken. "I heard something."
"I heard it too." I nodded.
We followed the noise to a dying deer.
"Oh, God."
"It's been hit by a car." Nancy pointed out, touching it lightly. "We can't just leave it."
I bent down beside her to get a better look. There was blood all over it. "We need to shoot it." I said finally.
"I'll do it." Jonathan reached for the gun.
"I thought you said--"
"I'm not nine anymore." He cut her off.
"I'll do it." I grabbed the gun form her hands, but before I could fire the deer simply vanished.
Leaving us all speechless and scared. The pain in my head intensifying.
"What was that?" Nancy asked, knowing the answer already.
We searched for signs of bleed, but there was none.
"Where'd it go?" Nancy sighed.
"I don't know." Jon shook his head. "You see anymore blood."
"Nope. It's all gone." I sighed.
He went to look somewhere else as Nancy neared a tree truck.
"Nancy?" I followed after her.
She glanced back at me once before crawling into the hole in the tree.
"Nancy? What are you doing?" I crawled in after her.
The place looked weird. Almost like the Upside Down sounded. That's when I saw the monster. This was the Upside Down
Nancy crept forward, only to step on a twig, making the monster whirl around to face us.
It growled and charged toward us.
Nancy screamed for my brother as she turned to run, grabbing me hand along the way.
But then something hit me. The pain in my head and the tiredness I felt vanished instantly.
I let go of Nancy's hand, and turned to face the monster.
"Kassy, what are you doing?" Nancy demanded.
I ignored her and took a step forward. The Demogorgon still coming fast. "Stop." I commanded.
The monster looked confused at me for a second then advanced.
"I said stop!" I repeated myself louder this time.
The Demogorgon froze, looking almost awaitingly at me.
"Nancy, go find Jon." I said over my shoulder, never taking my eyes off it.
I heard hurried steps, signalling she was gone.
"Come." I beckoned.
It did as told and stepped toward me.
"You listen to me?" I asked out loud.
'Yes'
It came from inside my head.
"Did you just say yes to me in my head?
'I did.' The monster answered.
"Why do you do as I say?"
