Chapter 10

It was now Monday, and this is the most I've dreaded going to work since I started. I know the chance of seeing Lorenzo is high, and I honestly don't want to see him again after embarrassingly trying to kiss him and being rejected.

As I drive to work, I tell myself to just pretend I don't see him if he's there. However, what I see when I walk in the café immediately ruins my plan and surprises me all at once.

"Lorenzo?" I ask surprised.

Lorenzo looks up from behind the counter, the apron looking surprisingly good on him.

He smiles, "Oh hey Bailee. How are you?"

I look at him slightly confused, as he continues to serve the customers yet acting as if nothing happened over the weekend.

"I'm good." I reply, putting on my apron and getting behind the counter with him. "I didn't know you were going to start working here."

"Me either. It was a last-minute thing and Marco knew I needed a job, so he offered one to me."

Great. Just great.

"Well...hopefully you make coffee better than you reject girls." I laugh, then instantly realize the stupidity of that joke.

Lorenzo just looks at me sadly, causing me to apologize profusely.

"I'm sorry, that was a really bad joke. I know you said you're nineteen and I understand that, but I just thought it would be a funny joke for the moment to try to break the ice and I know it was dumb and corny  but - "

He puts his hand on mine to try and stop my rambling. I notice I do that a lot.

"It's okay Bailee. The joke was funny... I just wish this could be different." He smiles sadly, and then walks off to help another customer.

He wants this to be different?

The rest of the day was filled with stolen glances and chance touches, but it never went beyond that. I could tell there was definitely some chemistry between us, but the age difference was such a problem for him. I hope we can get rid of this tensions in our relationship, so we can become friends, or it might become a real problem.

When I got home that night, everything was dark. Usually some lights are on when I get home, so to come home to darkness is kind of weird.

"Mom?!" I scream, hearing my voice echo throughout the entirety of the house.

No answer.

I walk up the marble staircase and see if she is in her room. As I walk down the hallway, a piece of paper stuck to her door begins to come into view.

In her delicate handwriting was written the following:

"Bailee,

Ash and I went out for a little dinner while you were working. We may be back by the time you come home but then again, we may not be. If not, there's leftover dinner in the microwave and remember don't go to sleep too late because there's school tomorrow.

I love you,

Mom"

I can't remember the last time she took out time in her schedule to do anything with me. I guess Ash is more important.

I rip the paper off her door in anger, crumple it up in a ball, and throw it on the ground. Walking into my room without eating dinner and jumping in the shower to take my mind off thing.

However, when I'm in the shower everything that's happened in the day just goes through my mind. I don't know why I thought that would be a good idea, but I guess its better than pretending nothing happened. I thought of telling Josh the embarrassing "date story, making the embarrassing joke to Lorenzo, the tension during work, and the anger for my mom I felt moments ago.

I realized then that even though today wasn't a great day, maybe I can make tomorrow even better.

When I get out of the shower I change into some pajamas, brush my teeth, and use my mom's brush to brush my hair because for some reason I can't find my hair brush. I have no idea where that went, but that's one more thing to add to the list 'missing hair brush'.

Ugh. Today sucked.

As I get into bed with thoughts running through my mind, all I can do is hope for a better day tomorrow.
