Van, that little girl can't replace what you've lost. You have to understand that. And you can't expect her to change anything.

Vanessa stares off into the distance for a moment before pushing past Ron and reentering the motel room. Ron clenches his jaw in frustration before following her.

INT. MOTEL ROOM - DAY

Mari's eyes fly open, but she has not been startled awake. It seems like a muscular habit more than anything.

She sits upright more slowly and observes Ron and Vanessa drinking from covered soda cups at the small table in the room.

Vanessa does not look up from her drink as she speaks.
