55: Paris

"We can save Taehyung!"

The next fifteen minutes were spent running around the mansion and trying to find a particular pair of jeans, where he had 'M.Y.G's note pocketed still. It only took him a while to realize that he still had no way to contact Min Yoongi because he had not left a telephone number.

"When did you last see him?! Did he say anything about where you can find him?" Mina rummaged through the jeans pockets again and again, trying to find another note with a telephone number written on it or simply anything that could possibly help them.

"There's nothing in there, he just left me that stupid note! He wanted to return his sister's soul into her body and travel the world or something, so he could be fucking anywhere!" She groaned, dropping her elbows on the dining table and cupping her temples. Jungkook had never seen her in such an agitated state.

"This can't be true. We're so close. This is the one chance we have for saving him and we can't let it slip away. It can't end like this, it just can't. But we can't just search the whole wide word like that. Is there anything else that could help us? Like a website, a book, a job or something?" Jungkook thought hard, quite literally frying his own brains for answers to a point where his ears could be releasing actual steam.

"Well... We saw him in this jewellery store for the first time. He was behind the counter, I think?" The witch's eyes widened and she clapped into her hands once.
"That's it. This is good. Do you know the name of the store? We could call and ask them!" But he shook his head.

"I have no clue how to contact them. It was this Swarovski store or something at the shopping mall." Suddenly she stood up.
"You know where it is, right? We're going there. We will hunt that Original vampire down and I'll personally extract his blood forcibly if that's what it takes." Not even waiting for a response, she marched out of the dining, Jungkook trailing after her like a lost puppy.

Would this really work? What if wouldn't? He felt extremely apprehensive about this.

"Come on! Taehyung's werewolf bite won't just cure itself, this is our one shot!" Those words were enough for him to pull himself together and vampire-speed out of the front door and begin the 'finding-Min-Yoongi'-journey.

To their luck, the jewellery store was still open, a lady standing behind the counter and tapping on her phone. When they asked her to tell them about her colleague Min Yoongi's current whereabouts, she frowned.

"Who?"
"A guy who worked here some time ago. He's short, has black hair, looks a bit like a cat? Do you know where he is?" And finally, she seemed to get it.

"Oh, him. I'm not sure, boss said he suddenly quit his job saying he would spend some time in Paris or something. That's how I got employed." They nodded, thanking her for the information and hastily moving back towards the mansion.

"Okay, I have an idea. I can do a locator spell on him. Now that we know about where he is, there's a big chance of finding him. I just need a bit of your blood to do the spell." However, Jungkook remained doubtful.
"She said she wasn't sure, though. And if we do find him, what do we do? And why the hell do you people need blood for every damn spell you perform?" She waved him off.

"Because that's how magic works. Let's just focus on finding him first."

And again, Jungkook was astonished by the way magic worked. This was the first time he witnessed a locator spell, a drop of blood being extracted from him and carefully placed on an old map showing not the entire world but central Europe.

And as soon as the witch started closing her eyes, grabbing Min Yoongi's note and chanting slowly, candles lit up around them and the drop of blood started moving around, leaving traces on the parchment and making a stop right on, as expected, Paris.
The atmosphere seemed thicker than before, as if there were invisible spirits were floating around the air and watching them, sharing their energy with the witch.

"So he really is in Paris. I'll book the next flight there right away, then. You stay here and take care of Taehyung," the vampire suggested, but furrowed his eyebrows when she shook her head.

"No way. If you're going to Paris, I'm going to Paris with you. You need me, it's a big city and I've been there before. Together we'll be able to save him faster." He sighed.
"But who will take care of--"

"Chaeyoung can. Taehyung will be fine, he just needs to push through a few more days. No second thoughts, stay focused. We're leaving for the airport, it's time we put your vampire powers to use."

°○●○●○°

When Mina talked about "putting his vampire powers to use", she had meant compelling the airport staff into selling them plane tickets for the next Paris flight despite it already being fully booked. Jungkook felt bad for the two people whose flights would be cancelled now, and felt even worse about the fact that he was currently sitting in first class without paying a single penny.

So there he was, sitting in his luxury seat flying to the city he had wished to visit his whole life. But then, why did it weigh so heavy on him?

Of course, the answer was clear. Taehyung wasn't with him and it felt like he was simply leaving him behind, although the sole reason he was doing so was saving his life.

He had never expected to be in this sort of situation. When he fantasized about flying to the city of his dreams, he had pictured a redheaded vampire sitting in the seat next to him, not the graceful yet intimidating blonde witch who was currently occupying said seat, nibbling on a chocolate-covered strawberry.

"So damn mean," he muttered quietly to himself. "I always wanted to try these, and when I get the opportunity I've turned into a blood-sucking monster that's biologically unable to eat them." All of a sudden, Mina turned towards him and grinned.
"You poor thing. I can't wait to try the fancy caviar and salmon, not to mention the fluffy caramels and truffles," she teased with a smirk, making him visibly sulk.

"Screw you. I miss instant noodles... and chicken..." He looked around him, grabbed a glass of rosy sparkly wine and downed it in one go. "Taehyung would have loved all of this, everything is so exquisite and fancy. I miss him," he spoke to no one in particular.

"One of his ex-boyfriends was a stone-rich scientist, he was pretty much always surrounded by luxury. Well, that was until... I think he told you what happened." Jungkook frowned, suddenly feeling a bit infuriated.
"The one who tried to use him for some sick experiment?" Mina nodded.

"I hope he had a painful death." And then, she smiled. "He did. Taehyung turned off his humanity after the betrayal, and he went completely rogue and deliberately killed all sorts of people in pretty brutal ways. He was one of them." And that calmed him down just a bit.

"What does it feel like, turning off your humanity?" She tilted her head, looking quite pensive.
"That's the point, you don't feel anything. You don't have a conscience, you have no sense of moral, dignity or understanding, no soul, no emotion and no spirit. You turn into an animal, acting out of instict, drive and urge. There are basically no limits, you don't think and just act, doing as your animal instincts please. Witches can't turn off their humanity, but we have a pretty clear picture of how it works."

"That sounds fucking horrible. Why would you do that to yourself?" She shrugged.
"Imagine being in so much pain you pretty much forget who you are, it eats you up in the moment. You start making rash decisions and instead of confronting the pain and learning to gradually cope with it, you rashly decide to feel nothing. You're blinded. In my opinion, it's a mistake. But we all learn from mistakes, so..." Appreciating how wise Mina was, Jungkook nodded.

Spending time with the witch, he felt a lot wiser and much more philosophical. Something about the way she talked gave him new perspective and made him see the world in a different point of view. It reminded him a lot of being with Namjoon. However, Namjoon's words were mainly based on scientific evidence whereas Mina took a much more philosophical, ethical and sometimes even theological insight on things.

After several hours of enjoying their highly comfortable plane ride, the two of them landed in Paris at last.

He and Taehyung had talked of Paris before, the redhead finding the city way too crowded. He had a point, as soon as they exited the plane they were met with an abundance of people swarmed everywhere in the Parisian airport. What was even more shocking was the fact that it was extremely early in the morning, not even six AM.

"Holy shit. So many damn people," Jungkook muttered in shock. Mina nodded gravely.
"I know. I hate saying this, but things used to be better back then. Tourism can really ruin the beauty of a city sometimes."

"You've been here before?" She raised her brows.
"Of course, Taehyung and me travelled to almost every part of the world. It used to be so romantic, he even had one of his relationships here. His third or fourth one, I can't really remember." He nodded understandingly, wondering what might have been the cause for this relationship's failure.

"And what about you? Did you hit it off with someone?" All of a sudden, she looked embarrassed.
"Why are we talking about me now?"

"Because I'm curious. Chaeyoung didn't exist back then and you can't tell me you've been a single lady for centuries looking like this." She laughed a little.
"Okay, I'm starting you like you. And yes, maybe there was someone, but that's not relevant to our mission right now. Please help me hold this, will you?" She pulled out a huge city map that she now unfolded, the vampire aiding her with a raised eyebrow.

"So do you plan on having a séance in public or something? You need to do magic to find him, don't you?" She shrugged.
"I thought we'd be able to find a secluded spot... since he's in the same city, I don't even need candles anymore. Just some blood and some peace and quiet."

Jungkook sighed. "Peace and quiet in a Parisian airport? I don't think so. At least everyone's busy. I can give you my headphones if you want?" She nodded half-heartedly, handing him a needle for the blood extraction.

It was a weird sight, the two of them standing at the emptiest space the crowded airport had to offer with a huge city map sprawled in front of them, Mina with a thick pair of headphones on and quietly chanting her spell. At first, she didn't think she'd be able to do it but luckily, the headphones managed to block out all the busy noises and she was able to channel her inner magic after all.

Nothing about this plan was genius or absolutely ideal, but they were in a hurry and were forced to act spontaneously and instinctively.

When the spell had succeeded, they found out that apparently, Min Yoongi was staying in the most expensive hotel in the whole of Paris. The question was just how they would get there.

"Hotel Athénée? That's pretty close to the Eiffel Tower, and the Arc de Triomphe! I've been there before, but it's a long way to go...," the witch thought out loud. They would never catch a train or a bus with so many people around. It wasn't one of the world's most touristic cities for nothing.

Suddenly, Jungkook had an idea. "You're travelling with a vampire. I have super-speed and I know how to use it. Uh... maybe I could take you on a piggyback ride or something?" She did not look convinced.

"I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with that," she stated bluntly. "But I do like your idea. There are so many people here, no one would notice us rushing past. I'll just take your shoulder, that should be enough."
They were excited, to say the least. Everything was going well, which brought them a huge deal of relief and anxiety at the same time. What if something went wrong now?

However, they weren't ones to just let their doubts take advantage of them. They had to save Taehyung and they had come too far to give up. So they literally risked their exposure by vampire-speeding through the crowded yet beautiful streets of Paris.
It was an exhilerating feeling, although Jungkook would've loved to stop and take a closer look every five seconds. This was the city of his dreams after all, and if he weren't so preoccupied with thoughts of Taehyung, he could've cried out of joy.

And as crazy as it sounded, their plan worked. Despite getting lost a few times, the Eiffel Tower was their one and only reliable guide and in less than an hour, they had reached the famous tower and were zooming towards Hotel Athénée.

"Woah," Jungkook gasped as he stared up at the massive five star-rated building, pretty balconies with red rose-decorated railings looking back down at him.

"What are you waiting for? Let's enter."
