47: In The Hospital
Jungkook visibly tensed at the words, letting go of the doctor and turning around slowly.
Taehyung could just see his eyes transition from a bloodthirsty red back into their usual warm and dark colour. His breathing was heavy and a remaining drop of blood was trickling down his chin.
They could hear the doctor behind him let out a groan of pain, this sound making Jungkook realize what he had just done and let out a heavy gasp. Not believing what in the hell had happened, he grabbed a fistful of his hair and slowly sank onto the floor in shock.
Momentarily, Taehyung broke out of his own state of shock and rushed towards him, quickly hugging him before he could crash.
"Hey, it's gonna be fine. Don't be too scared of yourself, you'll get used to it. Okay, that's easier said than done. But eventually, you will." He patted Jungkook's very tense back in hopes that he would feel calmer this way.
"You know, I had no idea this would happen. We were just having a nice day out and all of a sudden, everything escalates and now we have something that we couldn't have imagined in our wildest dreams... And it's all my fault, I shouldn't have run across the street like that. I'm so sorry, I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive myself for ruining your life. You're just as young as I was, with your whole life ahead of you." He buried his face in the crook of the other's neck, sighing deeply.
"Don't worry about the doctor and the whole lot of them, I'll compel them to forget. You didn't kill anyone so you don't need to feel horrible about yourself, okay?"
"I'll never be able to live like a normal person now, will I?"
Taehyung sighed again. "Well no, probably not. But you should always remember that you're not alone in this. I'll be with you every step along the way and help you where I can. When you're turned, there's lots of things you need to get used to and terrifying as they are, the quicker you manage to accept them as part of you, the better." He loosened the hug briefly and was glad to see that Jungkook seemed to have calmed down just a little bit.
"I'll never be able to walk around on a sunny day again, right? And I can never eat instant noodles again..." The redhead shook his head.
"You can walk in the sun, of course you can! I'll get you a daylight ring as soon as possible. You won't like the sun as much as when you're human, but that won't be a problem at all, okay? And, well, of course you can't eat instant noodles. Or anything, for that matter. Everything will taste like you're chewing on grass or crayon because your organism now fully depends on blood. But blood won't taste so bad after a while, either."
He wiped the drop of blood off his chin with his index finger and held it in front of his mouth. "Try it?" The ravenette stared at the drop hesitantly, slightly squinting his eyes and just about to give in to Taehyung's request when he realized that it was too late and Taehyung had already tasted the blood himself.
"Sorry, I couldn't resist." Both of them smiled sheepishly.
Few gasps from the far back of the hospital room broke the tension between the two. The team of nurses and doctors, who had basically been watching the two of them paralyzed in shock, seemed to have gotten back to their senses and were now trying to flee the room, which Taehyung prevented by vampire-speeding towards the exit and shutting the door before they even got there. "Nuh-uh. I won't have you people gossiping about me and my boyfie and our special powers. Please stand still while I modify your memory."
Jungkook watched silently while the redhead compelled every single nurse, all of them terrified to death, with an angelic smile and a gaze so innocent it looked as if he were telling them stories about rainbows and unicorns. He tried to hide the fact that he found it oddly attractive.
"You need to show me how to do that sometime," he whispered into Taehyung's ear as the two of them left the hospital room after everyone was compelled and the confused head doctor's wound was hidden perfectly by a wooly scarf (unfitting for the warm spring temperatures) and a false belief that he had a very nasty cold.
"Sure. I'll make you into the fastest, strongest and wittiest vampire anyone has ever seen." Taehyung grinned, however, that grin faltered after only a few seconds.
"It's the least I can do after messing your whole life up. I'm so sorry." He pressed the elevator button with his thumb harshly in frustration, slightly pouting.
"Hey. Don't feel down about something that's not your fault. I guess fate wanted me to be this way, it just happened and it doesn't have to be anyone's fault." Jungkook wrapped an arm around his shoulder while waiting for the elevator to arrive.
"But in this case, it really, really is my fault! And I didn't just ruin your life, I ruined Hoseok's too by making him trigger that stupid werewolf curse through hitting you with his car!" Jungkook blinked in confusion.
"Um... You made Hoseok trigger what through what?" The redhead gasped.
"Oh gosh, I didn't even get to tell you properly! Hoseok was the one who killed you by accident. And turns out he descends from a line of werewolves and he triggered his curse- no wonder he looked familiar, he looks exactly like his ancestors!" The new vampire's jaw dropped.
"Huh? Hoseok is--? Where is he, when have you last seen him?" Taehyung sighed deeply.
"In the ambulance. He started transforming and he tried to attack me so I told him to go into the woods where he'd be safe. I was so preoccupied by you dying, I really didn't have the chance to check up on him. I'm sorry." The ding of the elevator that just arrived interrupted the thick silence that just erupted between them.
"That's-- That's-- wow. That's a lot," the ravenette mumbled after the two of them entered.
"Do you see why I'm sorry now? Everything is just my fault and I'll feel guilty for the rest of my cursed immortal life! I'm such a clutz sometimes and I feel horrible for it!," Taehyung whined.
"Will you stop beating yourself up about this? Things happened the way they happened and there's no point giving anyone fault for it." Jungkook grabbed his shoulders softly and gave him a pleading look which made the redhead sigh.
"Fine. I'll try," he gave in, and in that exact moment, the elevator dinged again and the doors opened to reveal the sunny waiting room. Not many people were there, for better or for worse.
They had just walked two or three steps when all of a sudden, Jungkook groaned in pain and hid his burning face with his arms quickly. "It burns! What the actual hell?" Taehyung gasped, suddenly remembering that it was a bright and sunny noon and the sun was currently showing off all its powerful glory- not the best conditions for a new vampire that didn't possess a daylight ring.
"Oh shit. The sun!" He grabbed Jungkook's arm and quickly vampire-speeded to a little corner where the sun wasn't as present at this time of day. The kids' section of the waiting room.
"So I died and got reborn as a blood-sucking creature, I almost ate a doctor and I nearly went up in flames in less than twenty-four hours. I don't know what I'm supposed to think about this," the ravenette commented sarcastically, observing his still sizzling wrists in distaste.
"You'll get used to it. For now, let's stay... under here? Until the sun is gone." Taehyung caressed the burnt but slowly healing skin of his cheeks with his thumb and pointed towards a little table with several sheets of paper and colourful crayons on it, a table for children to unleash their inner artist in case they got bored in the waiting room.
"You're kidding. I'm not gonna sit under a kids' art table for half a day, is there no way I can get home despite the sun?" Taehyung shook his head. "No, not unless you wanna burn to your death. You don't have a daylight ring yet, but I can change that soon. Now get under there, the sun is very persistent today. I'll be there with you so you don't get lonely." Hastily, he pushed the other boy under the little table and crawled under it himself, the space just big enough to fit both of them.
"You know, this wasn't how I expected our first day as boyfriend and boyfriend to go at all. Like, what are the odds?" Jungkook shook his head in disbelief, not knowing how to process anything that had happened. Everything felt like a crazy dream and some part of him expected to wake up soon. But deep inside he knew that this was not a dream. And it scared him.
That fear that suddenly appeared of nowhere was beyond anything that he had ever felt, its power completely overwhelmed him, blocked his airways and blurred his vision. It was completely eating him up and he felt himself unable to move a single limb. He knew fear couldn't kill him, but deep inside, he was still worried it might never stop.
"All your emotions are amplified, it gonna take a long while to get used to it. Happiness, love and passion are gonna make you feel like the most invincible man on earth. But once sadness, guilt, fear and anger get a hold of you, you can't just shake them off. You'll feel like a madman, or like you're dying. Pretty ironic, considering the fact that you can't die. And I know you must be pretty worried right now. But it'll pass." Taehyung seemed to have sensed the sudden fear consuming him and quietly held his hand, not expecting him to respond.
"I know you're probably sick of me saying this, but I'm really sorry. Not because this is my fault, though it is! But just because it happened. You had your whole life in front of you and now it all turned upside down. But at least you're not dead for good?" He leaned his head on the other's shoulder, feeling oddly comfortable despite the heavily inconvenient arrangements.
"I guess so. I'm just really worried about Hoseok. I have no idea where he is, and I think I lost my phone when his car hit me," Jungkook now spoke, feeling a bit calmer.
Taehyung couldn't help but laugh softly. "In this situation, you can still manage to think about others?" The ravenette shrugged.
"What can I say, others are my life."
"I've always admired how selfless you are. After centuries of thinking of me and my survival at first place with no exceptions, I'm starting to realize how selfish I might've been," the redhead commented quietly.
"You didn't really have a choice with people constantly coming at you from left and right. And I'm kinda scared I might lose that. My selflessness, the putting others before myself. I don't want me to change but I can't help but change in a situation like this, can I?" Taehyung squeezed his hand softly.
"You really can't. At some point of dealing with your transformation, you're gonna see how much it changed you. But you can find a balance, you can connect the old you with the new one. And you absolutely don't have to turn into an egocentric diva like me." He nudged the pondering Jungkook which made him smile a little.
"Watch your mouth, I happen to like that egocentric diva a lot. Because I can tell you really changed in a positive way, within these few months I've known you." He pinched the older vampire's arm, leaning his head on top of the latter's.
And so they sat under the table all afternoon, until the sun had set and the world outside turned completely dark again, relieved that they had each other even in these particularly unusual situations.
