43: Happy Birthday
April brought pleasantly warm temperatures with it, multiple flowers proudly showing off their gorgeous petals in various shades and colours, ranging from blossom pink to forget-me-not blue. The air smelled fresh, sweet and honey-like, flower bouquets and spring-related accessories were successfully sold in every corner of the supermarkets.
Taehyung was currently roaming the corridors of an old, kind of cold mansion in Jinju. Its walls were held up by grey bricks, reminding of a knight's castle from Middle Age despite being quite modern. This was Chaeyoung's house, a place he had never been to before but the moment he stepped into it, he could already tell that this was a werewolf hunter's home.
A vegetable patch in the garden that grew nothing but wolfsbane was the first hint, the trap door in the kitchen that would lead down to a huge and dark dungeon the next. Not to mention all the bear traps, snares and occasionally even guns (Just how did these people get all their guns?). Generally, the house gave off a horribly eerie vibe that Taehyung did not like all too much. He liked big houses, but pretty and charming ones and not gloomy and dark ones. Even the champagne glasses from which they drank looked grey and dingy.
But that surprisingly did not kill the mood at all. Despite there only being three people inside the house, they had a fantastic time celebrating the werewolf girl's eighteenth birthday party.
"Cheers!," Chaeyoung exclaimed happily, holding up her dingy champagne glass and downed the champagne in one shot. Taehyung did the same, having mixed some good old blood in it before drinking his. And Mina, who wasn't all too fond of alcohol, stared her glass down sceptically before drinking a little sip and slightly wincing at the taste.
"Well, finally I can move out of this shitty place. Thank you for being the most ugly, discomforting place I could've ever spent my childhood and teenage years in," she spoke to no one in particular and simply glared at the huge dining hall in front of her. The vampire couldn't help but agree. "I feel you, this place sucks and this is my first time here. But happy birthday. I got you some skull-shaped earrings because I had no idea what else to get you." He pulled a little velvet sack out of his pocket, multiple pieces of jewlery jingling inside it.
"Thanks," the youngest laughed. "I can't believe I'm allowed to move out. And drink. And I'll go to college soon! And I can get tattooes!" She leaned back in her chair smugly, grabbing the kitchen knife to cut her bubblegum pink birthday cake (strawberry-flavoured), the cake matching her hair colour perfectly.
"Happy birthday from Jungkook, too. He got you a fantasy novel about werewolves and how to kill them. He- He's not the best at giving appropriate presents," the redhead mentioned, pulling out another package and laid it next to the earrings. At least Jungkook had made an effort in wrapping the present tidily.
"It's cool, tell him thanks," the birthday girl answered while cutting the cake in quarters, then eighths.
"So, I couldn't help but notice how much time you spend with that boy. Almost all of it. Are you two, like, a thing now?," Mina asked sceptically, him surpressing a giggle at that.
"Well... we're more than friends, less than lovers. For now? Actually, I've been wanting to ask him if... Or I'll wait until he asks me. Wait, how would you know how much time I spend with him?" The blonde raised her eyebrows.
"Because every time I call or text you, you respond with 'Sorry, I'm at Jungkook's' or 'I'll call you back later, Jungkook's here'. Please, what are you two doing that keeps you so damn busy?" Now, the vampire actually giggled.
"I don't think you'd wanna know, Minari." The witch rolled her eyes, sighing. "No, I really don't. But honestly, what are you gonna do about Kim Seokjin and his little stunts? You know I still get visions about him, his tattooes, some brown book and a bonfire or something. Also, traffic lights, the moon and a hotdog stand in the middle of the city." The redhead furrowed his eyebrows.
"I think you're high. That stupid bitch, his stupid tattooes and his stupid diary? Understandable. But the rest, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. But I started bringing gloves. I look so dumb, wearing gloves in April. But at least they're pretty." Mina nodded but looked anxious. "And safe. And I admit, my visions can be complete bullshit but most of the time, they have reasoning."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Can we talk about something cool now? It's your girl's special day, this shouldn't be about me and some butthurt vampire hunter, or Jungkook!," Taehyung protested, both girls looking slightly taken aback. "My-- well, is there anything you wanna know?"
The vampire nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, actually. How the hell did the two of you meet? I've been wondering about this for a while now but always forgot to asked." Mina and Chaeyoung looked at each other bashfully.
"You tell him. It's your birthday, not mine," Mina whispered, Chaeyoung nodding and thinking of how to start.
"Well, it's a bit of a strange story. A 'what-are-the-odds?'-kinda story. Anyways, it happened on a full moon, one month after that high school party where I literally killed a girl and triggered the werewolf curse, which I didn't know back then. I tried to live my life as normally as possible, I tried not to think of the fact that I killed a literal human being. I also tried not to think about how I suddenly had yellow eyes, I just assumed I went a bit crazy out of shock and imagined it."
"Well, me and two friends of mine met up and had a sleepover. Jae and Nayeon. They're great, but of course they know nothing about my werewolf-ness. Anyhow, we went out and walked to the supermarket."
-
"Guys, let's go up that hill and get drunk in the cemetery!," Jae suggested, two bottles of beer hiding under his arm and three packs of salt-and-vinegar chips under his other.
"Sounds like a plan. I swear, it's gonna be so spooky, today's a full moon," Nayeon agreed with a mysterious smile, carrying a bag of donuts and few bottles of vodka.
Chaeyoung, also carrying good amounts of alcohol and sweets, halted in her step. "Full moon?," she whispered inaudibly, clearly remembering the events from exactly one month ago in form of crucial flashbacks.
The girl. The girl falling. How she had pushed the girl. Herself running out of the house and cold air whipping her face like slaps of realization. Her reflection in the lake, eyes yellow as a traffic light. Her bones cracking, probably out of shock.
Would anything bad happen today?
"Should we really?" The other two also stopped walking, looking back to her. "I mean, getting drunk in a cemetery. Sounds kinda... unethical if you ask me. Wouldn't that be disrespectful to the dead?" Both of them started laughing, Nayeon approaching her and throwing her free arm around her shoulder.
"Don't think too much about it. The dead are dead, they won't mind a little bit of action. Just imagine being on that hill, drunk off your ass, the full moon over that graveyard. It'll be bombastic," she imagined with her eyes shining in anticipation.
"If you ask me, I think the dead should thank us for amusing them while they decompose in their graves. 'Cause we know how to party!," Jae exclaimed, Nayeon giggling and Chaeyoung shrugging and taking a deep breath, deciding to let go of her worries for a night and just hope nothing bad would happen.
So up the hill they climbed, Jae and Nayeon with delight and Chaeyoung rather anxiously. Visiting dead people right after being the cause of one didn't exactly make her feel better but then again, it wasn't like they could sense her and punish her for her crimes or anything. They were dead.
Of course, she hadn't told her friends about being a literal murderer. As far as they knew, a girl had died at the party she had attended and they were just happy that the girl wasn't her. If she ever would tell them, she didn't know.
"Guys. It's getting dark. The moon's gonna rise," Nayeon announced as they stood in the old graveyard, plenty of tombs casting dark shadows over the dry ground and glowering at them, covered in ivy and, occasionally, dried flowers.
All of them had a fun time consuming all of their snacks and beverage, Nayeon and Jae, who were definetely very lightweighted, standing arm in arm on top of a tombstone while swaying around and singing famous hits from the 90s (although lyrics were extremely slurred).
Chaeyoung, not completely sober herself but with a much bigger alcohol tolerance, giggled at the pair of them and took a video with her phone. She would never let the two forget this.
And suddenly, the full moon rose in all its glory.
While her friends stopped singing and now gaped at it wide-eyed, Chaeyoung started feeling extremely strange. As if her body had the sudden desire to rebuild itself. She felt dizzy, disoriented and her limbs started aching. And soon, everything hurt.
She dropped her phone. And then dropped to her knees without being able to control it. What was happening? It was like the moon had some sort of effect on her.
The pink-haired girl noticed how her sanity was about to slip away and her self-control was decreasing more and more by the minute. What if she hurt her friends? Was she turning into some sort of serial killer? She had to get away.
Forcing herself up on her legs, she completely forgot about her phone and sprinted down the hill as fast as she could despite being horribly unstable. And when she stood at the far end of it, she just stood panting, wondering where to go or what to do next. Was there any place where she and the people around her could be safe? Her head was starting to ache and the dizzyness was starting to take over.
As it got worse and worse, she started running even further along the completely empty streets but stopping and screaming out of pain as the bones in her arm started cracking- or breaking. She looked up. She had no idea where she was, but in front of her was an ancient-looking herb shop.
And in that exact moment, the door of the shop opened with a jingle and the sound of high-heeled boots filled the lonely alleyway. A lady stepped out, almost dropping her shopping bag in surprise as she saw the pink-haired person crouching down and screaming like a maniac.
Immediately, she rushed towards her. "Miss? Are you okay? Are you having a baby? A miscarriage? Should I call an ambulance?" Chaeyoung, who was pretty much at the verge of going insane and absolutely could not bear the thought of hurting anyone in her presence, pushed the lady away roughly. "Go away! Go away before you get hurt!," she shouted.
However, the mysterious stranger, a beautiful witch with soft blonde curls hidden beneath her dark cape, did not obey. Seeing the girl's bright yellow irises, she immediately knew what was going on. "I know what happened to you. I can help you, you must be a new werewolf."
"Wha-- werewolf? You're absolutely crazy! Just- do yourself a favour and leave me alone! Or I might do something stupid!," the werewolf exclaimed, now feeling the horrible sensation of bones cracking in her entire body.
"Listen to me. We have to get you to the woods. You'll be safe there. But anyone could see you here.," the witch spoke, grabbing her arm and dragging her away from the alleyway to which Chaeyoung could only protest loudly.
"We have to hurry before the transformation is complete. It's best if you stop fighting. I promise you that nothing is going to happen. You're not going insane, by the way. You're just... different with special abilities. Just like I am." She lifted her cape to reveal her face, smiling a little.
Chaeyoung was pretty much paralyzed in shock, for she had never seen such a person. Young and beautiful, yet there was something wise and ominiscient about her. And there was something else, something about her aura that almost made her seem magical.
The werewolf couldn't explain it, but something about that lady's smile made her stop fighting after all.
-
"I don't remember my first transformation. In fact, us werewolves never remember much from our transformations. Probably better that way. But I remember waking up covered in leaves and blankets and some girl sitting beside me. I'm telling you, that was a shock."
Taehyung gasped. "Wow. So that's how you met. In a lonely alleyway late at night, just like Jungkook and I did." All of them laughed.
"Yeah, what's up with that?"
"Well, it's kind of cute when you think about it," the vampire smiled, remembering the shameless raven-haired toddler very significantly.
"You know what I've been wondering about recently? How did you two meet, it must have been centuries ago! What were the odds?," the birthday girl asked the two of them, both Mina and Taehyung widening their eyes and biting their lower lip pensively.
"It's a very depressing story, actually. Not suitable for a birthday party. But you'll know soon enough, I'll tell you," Mina answered, taking a piece of cake and stabbing a fork into it.
"I really wanna try this cake."
And Chaeyoung had a wonderful eighteenth birthday party.
