41: Truth
"This bed is so small."
Taehyung yawned, stretching out arms and legs and shifting from left to right within seconds, quite literally thrashing around like an excited child.
"You know, I can't hold you like this," Jungkook grumbled, trying to hug him from behind but failing miserably due to the vampire flailing around like a little freshly caught fish. "I don't care. I need to move!," said vampire answered childishly, which made him sigh at the other's stubbornness.
"And I need you to be still, little vampire." All of a sudden, Taehyung halted in all his movements and turned around to look back at him in surprise. "What did you just call me?"
"You heard me. You're acting like a cute but also frustrating toddler and you're a vampire. I think this nickname suits you perfectly," the ravenette explained, grinning despite being extremely sleepy.
"I'm like three centuries old and you have the audacity to call me a toddler. You jerk," he sulked playfully and turned around from him again, which gave the human a perfect opportunity to slip his arms around his waist and hug him tightly from behind, his dark hair tickling the redhead's ear which the latter surprisingly did not mind at all.
"At least you're finally staying still."
But all of a sudden, a beep could be heard from the front door and someone entered the dorm quite loudly. Both Taehyung and Jungkook widened their eyes.
"What the fuck. Hoseok wasn't supposed to be here until midnight!," the younger boy swore as he removed his arms from around Taehyung and sat up in alarm. "Hide in the closet?" The vampire furrowed his eyebrows.
"Hide in the closet? Me?"
"Well yeah, unless you want to be exposed. You know he's gonna tell Jimin and Jimin's gonna tell Namjoon and soon, all of South Korea will know." As Taehyung also reluctantly sat up, the ravenette smiled weakly and kissed him while firmly cupping his jaw with both hands.
"I'll tell you when it's safe to come out," he whispered, mentally cursing when there was a loud knock on the door.
"Jungkook? Open up!" It was Hoseok's fist banging against the door indeed. Trying to look as normal as possible, Jungkook unlocked his door as soon as Taehyung was perfectly hidden inside his closet. He stifled a yawn as he opened it.
"What's wrong? I was just taking a nap."
"Really? I thought I heard voices. Woah, what happened to you? Your lips look hella swollen, what did you do? And is that a mosquito bite? Well, anyways, here's some mail for you." Hoseok passed two envelopes to Jungkook, scanning the room suspiciously.
"No one here, just me. And my lips are probably swollen from... Yes, the mosquito bite. Somehow. Thanks for the mail," he quickly excused himself, about to shut the door again when Hoseok stopped him with a shake of his head.
"You know, I really don't mean to snoop around or anything. But I couldn't help but notice that your parents always send you such huge envelopes with heaps of money. How come you live in this tiny-ass dorm when you could afford something much bigger? Or do you need it for other things?" Jungkook froze.
"Wha-- That's not money! They just send me... cards? To-- to congratulate me. For enduring the hardships of uni life?"
Oh lord, why are you such a bad liar?, the ravenette mentally cursed himself.
"That's not true and you know it! Once, I picked up the mail to give it to you and dozens of bills fell out! Millions of Won! I was shocked by how much it was but I figured you were saving for a motorbike or something and ignored it. But you've been getting these letters every month! What the fuck is up with that?" In that very moment, Jungkook wanted to sink five feet below the ground.
"The money wasn't meant for me. There was a mistake," he tried for one last time. Hoseok groaned in frustration.
"Why are you lying?! They keep writing you those little messages on the envelopes! 'Dear Jungkook, please accept this money.' 'Dear Jungkook, please give us a call.' 'Dear Jungkook, we beg you. Call us back. Mommy and Daddy.' I'm sorry, but I can't just ignore this! The hell's going on?" The younger felt like the air was getting knocked out of his lungs. Why did Hoseok have to find out, now of all times?
Jungkook didn't like keeping secrets from his loved ones, he really didn't. But he believed there were some things better left unknown. Why mention his parents when they weren't relevant in his life anymore?
"Nothing happened. Really! I'm not in the mood for this." The brunette sighed.
"Well, if that's what you want," he then spoke monotoneously. "You know, I've been sharing this dorm with you for quite some time now. You're like a little brother to me and I actually feel like I could trust you with anything in the world without hesitation. I always think I know you but actually, I don't know shit. You're not obliged to do anything, but I figured you'd feel the same way. I guess I figured wrong." Hoseok left the room quietly and closed the door, leaving the younger boy with a huge pit of frustration and guilt forming inside his stomach.
Taking a shaky breath, he massaged his temples and ran his hands through his hair while sighing multiple times. What could he do? What should he do? Was he being a bad friend, little brother and roommate?
"You should tell him," a voice called from the other end of the room, surprising him for a brief moment. Of course. Trying to avoid Hoseok's questions and feeling guilty and frustrated, he completely forgot about Taehyung still hiding inside the closet.
Hesitantly, he walked towards it in a slow pace. "So you heard. And you think I should tell him all about vampires and vampire hunters? I could never do that to you." He squeezed himself into the dark closet and sat down next to him, sighing deeply.
"You don't need to tell him everything, you know," the vampire spoke after a while. "Twist it around a bit."
"But that isn't any better, is it? It's just like lying to him all over again. And I don't want that, because I love him and he's important to me. But at the same time, I don't wanna put you in any danger. This is so fucking complicated." He started massaging his temples again.
"Of course. It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your loved ones, just like it does to others. And the same goes for keeping secrets. Keeping a secret isolates you without you realizing it, it's important you have someone to share it with. At the same time, there's the risk of putting someone in danger. A painful fear. But there's always a balance." Jungkook huffed.
"So what do you suggest I do?"
"I won't suggest anything, I trust you to do the right thing. You're smart enough to figure out what's right for you." This cheered the ravenette up significantly.
"Well, get going, then. While you have the chance." Taehyung lightly slapped his shoulder in order for him to stand up, gingerly kissing his cheek before he did so.
With a heavy and simultaneously floaty heart, Jungkook looked back to the redheaded vampire huddled inside the closet once with nothing but fondness in his gaze and then left the room to find his roommate, which wasn't exactly hard to do.
After knocking on Hoseok's door few times, he could already tell he was inside although there was no response. Without waiting for an invitation, he took a deep breath and entered the room to find Hoseok's back facing him, the brunette sitting on his bed with a pair of headphones on his head. By the way his shoulders tensed, it was clear Jungkook's presence hadn't gone unnoticed.
"Hey. Can we talk?," the younger asked carefully, and much to his relief, Hoseok removed the headphones and shuffled around on the bed until he was facing him. There wasn't any particular emotion written on his emotion that stuck out- a bit of fatigue, maybe.
"Okay, so..." Jungkook took another deep breath. "I'm sorry I was so dismissive earlier. You were right. My parents do send me money every day. They write those little messages on the envelopes because I don't take it. I don't accept anything that comes from them."
"What happened between you?"
This was why Jungkook liked Hoseok so much. Instead of jumping to conclusions and saying things like "How dare you do that to them, that's so disrespectful!" to accuse him, he was completely unbiased and waited for an explanation patiently.
"It's a really long story. I cut them off from my life completely, they're trying to crawl their way back in." The brunette simply blinked, motioning for him to continue.
"Well... Let's just say my parents, or my family, have strange beliefs. That's another way to say they're complete nutters. They... They believe in supernaturality and supernatural creatures. And that's not the problem, I'd respect that much. But they're fucking obsessed. They want to kill those supernatural creatures in the most brutal way possible." Jungkook hoped he had not said too much, noticing Hoseok's eyebrows lifting significantly.
"Supernatural creatures? Like fairies and mermaids? That's... interesting." The brunette would have laughed if the situation weren't so nerve-wrecking for him.
"No, not fairies. But vampires, werewolves. Witches, too, I think. I personally don't believe in it, but that's not the point. They acted like they were part of some cult, it was insufferable."
"There were weapons everywhere. Weird herbs that were supposed to kill vampires and werewolves. They said the weirdest prayers at mealtimes, not praying to God but praying for the demolition of those creatures. They kept feeding me weird stuff that would protect me from them. And completely forced me to agree with their sick mindsets, tried to manipulate me." The older's eyebrows furrowed.
"Woah, that's creepy as hell. But they seemed so normal!," he spoke after a while.
"Of course they pretended to be in front of my friends. But they thought they were the chosen ones meant to destroy supernaturality. They got tattooes, did blood rituals even. When I was old enough to realize what they were doing, I started feeling like I lived with some sort of demons. But when I was little, I guess I went along with it. Even went hunting with them."
-
"Honey, you're sure there is one here?" A beautiful woman, holding a little toddler's hand, asked, observing the forest around her.
"I told you there is. Seokjin's compass doesn't lie. The abominations have come," her husband responded firmly, a gun raised in front of him and aimed at whatever danger might be lurking around. That gun was the most precious thing in his possession, shipped from the United States illegally and filled with dozens of wooden bullets.
The toddler yawned. "Mommy, can we go home? Jungkookie is tired." The woman patted his parka-clad back while still looking in front of her. "Soon, my baby. This is what you were born to do and this is what you will do in the future. When you're old enough, you'll understand. You need to get used to this, from a young age."
"Quiet, Seojin. I think I heard something." Everything was silent, except for little Jungkook's feet shuffling around on the ground in boredom. "Daddy, I don't think there won't be any deer tonight!," he exclaimed, yawning once more.
"Today, we are not catching deer. There is something far more dangerous, brutes we are meant to kill until they go extinct. That's our legacy," Mr. Jeon answered, clicking his tongue when he still couldn't see a thing. "These beasts, always so quick-witted!." He gritted his teeth.
"Vampires?! But daddy, vampires aren't always bad! They can be good and they are beautiful, why do you have to kill them?," the boy asked with a sad pout, his mother's eyes instantly widening as she gripped his hand even tighter, which made him slightly wince.
"Jungkookie." Her voice was sweet, but there was a very chilly undertone to it. "I want you to never say that again. As beautiful as these monsters may look, they only mean to lure you in and destroy you after you have entered their trap. But you will not let that happen, you need to destroy them first before they destroy you." Her finger ran along his bruised cheek, stroking the scar softly.
"This proves your legacy," she whispered, now touching her own cheek with the same scar displayed on it. Jungkook didn't say anything, not understanding what his mother meant by that.
"Seojin! Quick! I think I heard something!," the man hissed, lunging forward while loading his gun. The raven-haired toddler was already used to this scenario, having followed his father around during hunts quite a lot and feeling bored out of his wits. Nothing was happening, what was he supposed to do here?
His mother let go of his hand due to shock and jogged forward to join her husband, panting in excitement. Jungkook used this opportunity to sneak away and run around freely, hoping to encounter something more interesting than same old boring woods that he had seen a million times either way.
And that's how he ended up in a random alleyway, accidentally encountering a very special someone.
-
"They dragged you into the woods to-- they cut your cheek for some-- Wow, they're fucking psychos!," Hoseok exclaimed in shock, his eyes wide as saucers, shuddering at the thought of his parents forcing him to join some vampire-killing cult. Vampires didn't even exist, what was the reason for such a fiasco!
Jungkook nodded. "Yeah, and when I turned eighteen they tried to get me to pledge my life to this weird supernatural-killing society of theirs. And that's when I lost my marbles and told them to fuck off. You know I'm an only child, that's why they keep trying to coax me back into the family."
The brunette gaped. "I understand now- God, I'm so sorry you had to live with such crazy fucks. Thank you for telling me. Do you plan on telling Jimin and Namjoon?" Jungkook had originally planned on declining, but suddenly considered another option.
"Maybe," he smiled. "Might aswell, now that you know." Hoseok walked over to him and gave him a hug.
"That's my Jungkookie. Living without family must be a tough thing, but you know you have us as a substitute for that. But you need to tell us stuff like that, yeah? Trust me, that'll always make you feel better. Like a gigantic pile of heavy-ass stones falling off your back."
Jungkook returned the hug only gladly. "Of course, I will," he spoke, knowing that Taehyung and his skilled vampire senses must've heard every single word of the conversation and subconsciously smiling.
