30: Operation Kim Seokjin
"What the hell are you two doing here?!"
The two of them spun around with round eyes and their jaws dropped and immediately jerked back when seeing who currently stood in front of them.
"Jimin?," they called out at the same time, shocked out of their wits. The short noodlehead looked at them with his eyes narrowed out of suspicion, his hands on his hips. "Yes, me. What on earth's going on? Why are you here so early?," he asked them.
"We could ask you the same thing," Jungkook shot back. Jimin suddenly looked pitiful.
"Mommy had to bring Yoo to the vet's again and dropped me off like an hour earlier," he answered. "Yoo tried to climb a tree to catch a bird and fell down on her paw, it's broken. My poor, clumsy babygirl." Taehyung recalled having the cat on his lap after the sleepover at Jimin's. He also recalled himself being seated on Jungkook's lap.
And now, the two of them had kissed...
Taehyung! Focus!
"Stop trying to distract me! What are you doing here, lurking in front of Mr. Kim's office like burglars?," Jimin demanded again.
Jungkook decided to respond instead of Taehyung, which the redhead was thankful for. "Uh, we... we...," he stammered.
"You know Mr. Kim is a distant cousin of mine, right? Uh... We wanted to play a little prank on him." The blonde's eyebrows furrowed. "But why? Has he done something to piss you off?"
Jungkook looked like he was internally panicking.
"Um-- He owes my parents some money and refuses to pay up. So they called me and told me to- I don't know- drop a hint and pressure him and stuff. I figured sneaking into his office and planting something in there would be a good plan." Finally, Jimin looked convinced.
"Really? I didn't take him for that kinda guy. I thought all of your family were on amazing terms with each other!" The ravenette nodded a little too persistently.
"Mishaps can happen, I guess. Money drama, amirite? But of course. Apart from that, we remain one big, happy family." There was something pained and forced about his sudden smile, the sight feeling like a blow into Taehyung stomach as the realization hit him.
He hasn't told him... About him cutting ties with his family...
For a moment, the vampire wanted to grab his hand or touch his arm reassuringly but eventually decided against it as Jimin asked his next question: "Wait-- But that still doesn't explain why you're here, TaeTae! Did you two make up? Are you finally friends again?!," he exclaimed, clapping his hands in excitement.
The boys' cheeks reddened, both of them immediately thinking of the same thing.
Could they be called friends? Did they even make up? Why did they kiss in the first place, and why could neither of them mentally move past it?
"We're trying to be. It wasn't a serious fight in the first place and we realized how stubborn we were being and how much of a hard time we were giving you and Namjoon by acting so spiteful around each other," Taehyung shot out quickly. "How did you know we were up here?" Jimin raised an eyebrow.
"Are you kidding me? I could hear you from all the way downstairs, throwing things on the floor!" He pointed towards Taehyung's items sprawled across the floor which made the vampire mentally facepalm. How could he have not paid attention to how damn loud he was being?
"Ooh! Where did you get this nail polish? The colour would go so well with my hair..." The noodlehead was pointing towards the golden nail polish bottle and Jungkook, turning impatient, forced a smile and grabbed Taehyung's wrist to pull him along as he made his way back to Mr. Kim's office.
"Sorry, Jimin. But I really wanna get this done and we've got to hurry. I'd appreciate it if--"
"Oh, of course! My lips are sealed! I'll make sure no one enters the office," Jimin spoke happily, both Taehyung and Jungkook letting out a breath of relief at that. "Thanks, Jimin," they spoke in unison as they tended to the office's door once again.
"So, you haven't told Jimin about your parents?," Taehyung asked carefully, as soon as they had succeeded breaking into Kim Seokjin's office. It looked a bit like a CEO's office, a golden name tag on the wooden desk and loads of papers and folders stacked everywhere. They didn't know where to start.
"I didn't think it was necessary for him to know what's there to know? It's not like he believes in vampires. You do the desk, I do the shelves?," Jungkook mumbled, clearly avoiding the topic and making his way towards the shelves to look through the abundance of papers. Taehyung frowned, subconsciously pouting a little.
"But he's your friend. Friends don't lie. You don't have to tell him about the vampire hunter part. However, he does deserve to know about you breaking off contact with your family, don't you think?" He moved towards the desk to examine the messy papers on it, the ravenette freezing in his movements.
"Just to make him ask a billion unwanted questions? You know how nosy he gets, it's not a bad thing but I don't think I could live peacefully with him constantly interrogating me about why and how I did this, you know? I don't wanna talk about it, my family's not worth the talk." The younger then picked up a folder, checking the papers in it.
"This is just class preparation stuff, criminality rates and shit," he added.
"Well, you should still check all of them, there could be something hidden!," Taehyung protested. "And I can see you're not ready to talk your situation through with all your close ones, but talking is the first step of--"
"I don't want to talk about it with anyone, okay? The only reason I told you is the fact that you're personally affected and you deserved to know. But do you realize how fucking humiliating it is, having parents who are so full of hatred and narrow-minded they act like the literal spawns of Satan and cut their own son's cheek because their ideology is more important than their own kid's health? They're psychopaths! Some things are just better left unsaid, okay?" The redhead frowned again.
"That's what you think. Every time I felt like shit and I talked it through with Mina, it immediately made me feel better. Worked for centur--"
"Wow, you suddenly have a lot of interest in my personal life for someone who pushed me away and ignored my feelings for over a month," Jungkook spoke bitterly. "All of these are filled with school stuff, there's no use. What about the desk?" Taehyung rummaged through its papers aggressively.
"Don't make me feel guilty about it, I was just looking out for myself plus I still am not sure what to think. Why do you think I'm doing this?" He pointed towards the stack of papers in front of him. "These are all about court panels. We should check the drawers instead. He was dumb enough to leave the key on the desk, it's worth a try." His fingers enclosed around a little golden key peeking out from between the papers.
Reluctantly, Jungkook agreed and together, they opened the drawers of the desk curiously. And much to their surprise, they did find a little something:
"Physics, maths, science. All about magnitude and weird calculations... mostly about compass needles. Yeah, I think this one speaks for itself. He made the fucking compass," Jungkook spoke, holding scribbled notes in his hands of which Taehyung could not decipher a single number or letter.
"How can you tell?"
"You took engineering at a uni and you don't know the basic principles of math or science? Why am I not surprised?" The ravenette almost laughed.
"This ones about cellular structures... of vampires? Every single body part, particularly eyes and ears. Yeah, this is definetely not good," he established, mumbling a little to himself as he took pictures of the pages. Feeling a tad worried, the redhead gulped and watched his concentrated side profile with a tinge of apprehensiveness.
On the bright side, he was starting to believe in Jungkook's innocence more and more. And on the darker side...
He widened his eyes. "He could be doing labour experiments on vampires. Cutting them, breaking their bones, torturing them. It's a real thing that's happened before. And if something like that is happening again-" All of a sudden, the vampire felt extremely nauseated, memories as well as possible worst-case scenarios flooding his mind and practically choking him.
"Maybe these are old notes that he inherited, he doesn't seem like much of a biologist to me," the younger tried to reassure him. "Hey, come on. I won't just let you get dragged into some sort of labour like that. Plus, you possess like a gazillion times his strength. You can defend yourself, you're a fighter. So don't worry." All trace of the earlier slight snarkiness gone, Jungkook decided to take an enormous risk and wrapped an arm around Taehyung's shoulder, the redhead tensing up at first but then luckily not fighting back.
"Thanks," he whispered. "We should restore all of those and lock the drawers again, that way no one will notice we were here. I think that was it for the office, but I've met vampire hunters before and I know their mentality. There's something else he's hiding, something he keeps close to himself constantly. Something where he brags about his plans and achievements as if it were something great. I know it. A diary, a sketchbook, like that. And I want to find it."
To his surprise, Jungkook didn't decline immediately and view him as completely crazy. "Okay. But how do you suggest we get close to him?," he asked calmly, gazing at him from sideways.
For the first time today, Taehyung smirked. "Don't worry, I always come with a plan B when I think things through. And I've got just the perfect idea on how to distract him."
°○●○●○°
Jungkook had to admit, Taehyung's plan was genius and hilarious at the same time.
Surprisingly, the plan included nothing but two cups of iced Americano, two cups of hot Americano and four very special people, The Wenches.
It was very simple: Jungkook stayed behind after class and hid under his desk while Mr. Kim was busy cleaning the board and Taehyung was hot on the four girls' heels as they left the classroom. For the next step, he emptied the coffee cups over their heads, the steaming ones over Seolhyun and Heejin, the iced ones over Wendy and Ailee.
He had to admit, he was definetely having more fun than he was supposed to.
As soon as he had completed his mission, he vampire-speeded into the classroom silently while blood-curling screams filled the hallway. His already highly sensitive ears were definetely not enjoying this too much, he was forced to cover them with his nose scrunching in distaste.
"My hair!"
"My skirt!"
"My Chanel shoes!!"
"AHHHHH!! Someone HELP!"
Immediately, Seokjin stopped cleaning the board while jerking back and, with an aghast expression, dashing outside to rush to his students' aid but not looking too pleased doing so. For right reason, it literally sounded like a serial killer was on the loose and someone was about to get brutally disposed of.
"Come on, let's hurry," Jungkook urged, not being able to repress a huge grin forming on his face due to the hilarious situation. Together, they rushed towards the teacher's desk and immediately started rummaging in his bag. The ravenette stood close behind Taehyung, checking if there was anything hidden in the school material used for today's course. While Taehyung was basically holding his breath while feeling the insides of the bag for anything suspicious, Jungkook was trying to breathe in and out calmly which worked only partially.
"Girls, are you okay? Who did this to you?," they could hear from outside.
"W-We don't know! Whoever it was is going to pay, that little skanky bitch! This is a limited edition-skirt!," Heejin sobbed dramatically.
The vampire giggled. "Like a bunch of headless chickens, really." His fingers brushed against several folders that much resembled the ones stacked inside the office but weirdly enough, he didn't feel like it was necessary to examine them. He was looking for something more personal, the only question was if he'd he able to find it.
"I feel bad for laughing," the younger answered. "Nothing here, let's take a closer look at that bag." He started rummaging inside the big brown leather bag aswell, tensing up when his fingertips coincidentally brushed Taehyung's a few times. The redhead wasn't doing much better, it seemed as if his cheeks were getting more and more heated each time his hands accidentally met Jungkook's. Plus, his legs felt like uncontrollably wobbly jelly.
He knew what these signs signified and he wasn't a fan of it.
"Ma'am, do you mind getting these girls a few towels? Someone just pulled a horribly dirty prank on them and now the floor's an utter mess! I'll tend to them after I've finished packing up and cleaning the board!," Mr. Kim assured, probably talking to a cleaning lady. Taehyung gasped, all feelings of sudden giddiness replaced with panic.
"Fuck, go faster," he cursed under his breath, pulling the bag closer and digging deeper. The cleaner mumbled some indistinct words and soon, the teacher's footsteps could be heard on the hallway outside, leading towards them.
And suddenly, he felt a little leather-bound book in his hand, letting out a squeak of surprise but not wasting any time and immediately grabbing it, vampire-speeding back behind a table while clutching Jungkook's hand harshly. Just in the perfect time, since the teacher reentered the exact moment after.
"You can let go of my hand now," the ravenette commented as soon as they had sneaked out of the classroom again and were in a safe and secluded space, past the sticky puddles of coffee and few crunchy ice cubes. And like it was on fire, the vampire let go of his hand with his entire body feeling like it was, in fact, on fire.
"Sorry!," he whispered frantically, eyeing the little book inspectively. Jungkook smiled a little.
"It's okay, I didn't mind. So, this is either a planner, a calendar or a collection of all his nasty schemes. Should we open it?"
Deeply concentrated and feeling anxious and even a little fearful of what he might find, Taehyung nodded curtly.
And with Jungkook's hand positioned right over Taehyung's gently, the two of them flipped the first page of the book.
