Twelve

His mother looked at me with a murderous stare; she looked nothing like Frank. Her brown hair, a few shades lighter than his, was in a tight bun on top of her head. She had been crying, her blue eye were red and puffy.
A few moments after I had opened my mouth, Frank pushed past her gently, ignoring the look of horror on her face. How dare her son push her aside for some boy. One day, I would assure her that I was much more than some boy.
He seemed incredibly relieved as we walked further and further away from his rundown house. His mannerisms screamed happiness, I was basking in it.
"So, your mother seems like a nice lady." I said sarcastically, kicking a rock into the road. He stopped, turning to me with a blank look as if to say 'You must be blind'.
"Okay, okay. But I haven't met her properly, so you can't judge me." I held up my hands defensively as we neared a dirt road. The fir trees towered over us, blocking out the sunlight; the sky threatening to rain.
"You don't live with it." He shivered. He really did hate her.
"She's a lady, respect her pronouns." I laughed, pulling a broken branch off a nearby tree. The smell reminded me of Christmas, even though it was months and months away. Frank looked at me, in a state of mock anger, not breaking his stare.
"Tell me about your life, seeing as we've covered a huge portion of mine." He challenged, raising an eyebrow, revealing his beautiful hazel eyes.
"Well, you've met my brother Mikey. He's a few years younger than me. Sometimes I want to push him into a wall. My parents aren't really around anymore, I haven't seen them for a while. We were practically raised by our grandmother, Elena," I began. Elena wasn't our real grandmother, but she insisted that we should call her that- in case of confusion. I owed my life to her, Mikey too.
"And we move around a lot, we never really find anywhere that we can settle down." I couldn't tell him why we could never truly call a place home; it was much too soon, he wouldn't understand. He'd turn and run in the opposite direction, screaming bloody murder. Then I'd have to kill him, nobody could know about us. They'd kill us, use us for science or some such malady.
"That's sad. I wish that I could move, I hate this town. Nothing happens. I'm usually the main talking point." He sighed, as we came to a fork in the trail. I allowed him to choose the way, as he clearly was familiar with the route. He would come here to escape; honestly I would too.
"Why's that?" I asked, tossing the branch aside. My hands were stained green, I wiped them on my jeans.
"I'm gay, and that's so ungodly." He said very bluntly. I had never known somebody to be so open about their sexuality. Me, I kept it inside. I was somewhat ashamed, thinking that I'd never come across somebody who would understand. Mikey had managed to bully me into telling him, and he had soon told Elena. She had always known, she had said. I didn't.
"I see."
"Don't worry, I'm not gonna attack you or anything." He laughed, shaking his head. I couldn't help but smile. I wanted to tell him that he wasn't alone- but I was too afraid. As usual.
"It's fine, it's not every day that you come across a fine specimen like me." I joked, nudging him with my elbow. He told me to shut up as we came to a river. Over the other side was a huge pile of rocks, untouched by civilisation.
"Not a lot of people come around here, they think that it's full of demons or something. Or they might just know that I come here." He chuckled.
I stepped across the river, holding out my hand to help him across.
We sat together on top of the rocks, admiring the water as it fell into a pool beneath us. I wanted to take off all of my clothes and dive in, but my brain constantly reminded me of the circumstance. And I had no clue as to what sorts of objects lay beneath the blackening waters.
He sighed, dangling his legs over the edge.
"It's really peaceful here, I'd come here more often if my mother didn't try to keep tabs on where I am all of the time." He said with a deep sigh.
I was lying on my back, watching the grey clouds creep across the once clear sky.
"Why does she do that?" I frowned, not taking my eyes away from the sky. It was going to rain; I knew it.
"She's scared of loosing me." He laughed nervously, his hands folding in on each other. I sat up, wanting to comfort him.
"She won't lose you, I know that you love her. You just don't like to show it." I delivered the harsh reality, it being that he did love his mother. He may not have liked to admit it, but I knew that he would've been devastated if anything did happen to her.
A single drop of water landed on his soft hair, dripping down his nose. He frowned, as the rest of its friends soon followed.
