Chapter 7: Learning
~Karma's POV~
I smiled brightly skipping down the hall towards the library. A few wandering vamps gave me weird looks. I ignored them. I opened the doors to the library and stepped inside. I closed the doors behind me before immediately jumping onto a latter and rolling further down the book shelf. It stopped right at the section with books about magic. I climbed up towards the top shelf before scanning over the titles. I snapped my fingers and an empty cardboard box floated next to me. I plucked a book off the shelf before blowing the dust off of it. I skimmed over the first few pages before putting it in the box. I got another book, checked the first few pages, put it in the box. This continued for a while until the box was full. I hopped off the latter with a thud before walking out of the library. The box floating behind me. More weird looks as I marched up to my study. On my way up the stairs I was able to hear faint piano music. A smile came to my face as I started sprinting up the stairs. I stopped at the door, catching my breath for a minute before slowly and silently opening the door. (Y/N) was sitting at the piano again, playing away. Tonight she was playing a bouncy song with a smile on her face. I just watched her silently, enjoying the music before sitting next to her without disturbing her. She didn't even realize I was there yet. I smiled, watching her completely lost in her music. I shook my head a little as she finished up. "You're getting so much better. That was great (Y/N)! You need to play for me more often." I said cheerfully. She jumped five feet in the air with a yelp before falling off the bench. I laughed a little. "Cute." I muttered. "KARMA YOU A*SHOLE! D*MN YOU!" She shouted. (Y/N) jumped back up on her feet while glaring at me. Of course her smile remained on her face. I smiled back and we both just started laughing. She sat back down, crossing her legs as she shot a look at the floating box of books. "What're those for?" She questioned. I smirked a little as the books started floating out of the box and circling around us. "Since it's been a few months and still no sign of magic, I think it's safe to say you're getting some pretty powerful magic. So I thought, let's see if we can determine what you might be getting beforehand. I'm gonna teach you a little more about magic so you'll be more prepared for when you get it." I explained. (Y/N) nodded before plucking one of the books from the air. "The first thing you need to note is that because you haven't gained your first power yet, you won't be able to use any form of magic. And that we're still discovering new powers to this day, so you may get something that we had no idea existed." I said. (Y/N) nodded again before tilted her head a little. She shot me a look. "Question. You mentioned that at the very least you get one power when you turn. But is it possible to gain more than one at a single time period?" She asked. I smirked, ruffling her hair. Only to get my hand smacked away. "Good question. And the answer is yes. It is entirely possible to gain more powers at one time. Though its very rare, it has happened before." I said. (Y/N) hummed a little to herself opening the book to the first page.
"It says here powers will sometimes be in tune with a vamp's personality and skill set. Is that true?" She asked. I nodded. "My first power was my flames. Matching with my more...prideful and temperamental nature." I said. I tapped the book a little. "Its all about self reflection. What are the core traits of our personalities? But since its taking this long, I'm gonna assume you may get an elemental power. So think. What element do you most relate too?" I asked. "Probably something closer to fire or electricity." She responded. "Right...you do have that temper about you. But while you can be a bit of a smarta*s, you've also shown amazing flexibility and a strong sense of understanding. My money is on water or wind. Especially with wind considering that it can be both flexible yet at the same time can turn on you in an instant. Wind is a temperamental element yet at the same time one of healing." (Y/N) scoffed a bit. "Me? Flexible? You're talking to the wrong person. I'm as stubborn as they come." She said. "Well not all powers are in tune with our personalities. Some can be in tune with our interests, our strengths, hell sometimes even our weaknesses. And some of the strongest powers aren't even element based." I explained. "Hm...what are some of the strongest powers you have?" (Y/N) asked. "Well...brainwashing for sure, my fire, teleportation is pretty OP at times, my limited ice magic and my electricity-" "Why is ice limited?" (Y/N) asked. I blinked at her for a minute before shrugging. "Its on the other side of the spectrum." I said. "What spectrum?" She questioned. "Elements (Y/N). The Elemental Spectrum. Ah. Gimme a minute. Excuse my bad drawing skills." I said before grabbing a white board and a few markers.
"This is the Elemental Spectrum. You have your base four elements, Fire, Air, Water, and Earth. Then you've got their branches. Other skills that masters of the core element can learn. Like earth for example. If you're a master of earth you can eventually control metal and even plants/nature. Hell, I've seen some powerful Earth users learn how to speak with animals. Or with Water. As a master of water you could learn to use ice or gas. The other states of matter." I explained. I pointed to the fire element. "My main element is fire, therefor making it nearly impossible to learn something on the other side of the spectrum. Example, water. Its near impossible for me to ever use water, ice, gas, etc. The only reason I can use ice is thanks to Asano. But that's a story for later." I explained. "What about these darker elements? SW, SE, SA, and SF?" (Y/N) asked. "Every element has a dark side to it. Those are the shadow versions of each element. While Shadows/Darkness can be considered an element all its own, each element has its own shadow version. Shadow fire, for example." I held out my hand and the blood red flames appeared again. They slowly darkened and turned black. "Shadow fire is a dangerous half of the element. And learning the shadow versions of some elemental magic has driven many vamps insane over the years." I explained in a dark tone. "Its cold..." (Y/N) commented. I extinguished the black flames. "Black fire or Shadow fire, drains all the warmth out of the room and of the victims its used on. It sucks up all the warmth until it burns hotter than any other fire ever. Scary right?" I asked. She nodded a bit. "What about this right here?" (Y/N) asked, pointing at the red circle on the water side. "Ah. That's a forbidden technique for the most part. But important and powerful none the less. You know how a human or vampire's body is made mostly of water?" I asked. She nodded. "Well that technique allows you to manipulate someone's body by controlling the water in them." (Y/N)'s face grew even paler than normal. "I should really give you a history lesson. Lets just say, there's a reason most young vampires learn this stuff as early as we can teach them. The elements of nature are dangerous things to play with. We like to call that specific division of water magic Blood Bending. Its scary stuff." I commented. (Yo where my Last Airbender fans at!?)
(Y/N) put the books down in the box before crossing her legs on the bench. "I've got time. Nothing better to do. Let's have a history lesson." She said. "Why is it a forbidden technique? I thought vamps would be all over that since y'know...blood and everything." She commented. I took a deep breath before looking her in the eyes. "Welp. Time for a history lesson." I said with a shrug. "A long time ago, at the dawn of vampires, the first ever Scarlet Night, four vamps emerged from seventeen. Each vamp being a master of one of the four elements. A girl, some called her Midnight, a vampire of insanity, and a master of fire. Midnight is the only one we know the name of, being that she was the leader of the first ever vampire tribe. The next was a male, master of air and wind alike. Short in stature but a vicious fighter. He was a sin of pride if I'm remembering correctly, and Midnight's mate. The other male, an earth master, was a sin of sloth. Very keen with perception, but he wouldn't always speak the truth if he saw it. Then finally, another female, a master of the flowing element of water. She was a sin of wrath (Y/N). Despite her element she was easy to anger or provoke, but most of the time kept a monotone face. As still as the surface of a lake." I started. "With these four leading the way, they began to turn more and more people into vampires, powerful people. And their small tribe grew. Soon, Midnight led the others into a new location, close to a secluded human village, and it was believed that this very castle was the first ever built. And that since the first tribe was born under a Blood Moon, they named their tribe after it. Hence the Blood Moon tribe, and our castle here today." I continued. "But eventually, as each of the four elemental users got more powerful, the water user began to feel like she was unappreciated, even with her mate staying close to her side. She didn't trust Midnight much, nor did she trust her mate. The water user grew resentful, and eventually, had an idea. She hunted down a human and began to practice manipulating the water in their body. This technique, Blood Bending, is what she used to try and overthrow Midnight. And it almost worked. The water user got almost everyone to dance on her strings. And for a while, it was believed that Midnight and her mate wouldn't be King and Queen for much longer. This...power of bending one's blood seemed to be both unstable, and unstoppable. And if it wasn't for her mate's quick thinking, our tribe would be different today." I explained.
"Midnight's mate, the wind user, combined his power with Midnight's. Using his complete mastery over Air, he manipulated the weather and called up a thunder storm. Midnight, with her complete mastery of fire, was able to redirect all of the lightening strikes at the water user. Electricity beats water, and she ended up fried. They locked her up as a small mercy to their friend. They didn't have it in them to kill her, and they didn't want to bring despair on her mate. So in the end, no one knows what happened after that. Blood Bending is forbidden to use because of how dangerous it is. Keep in mind, she nearly took over the entire kingdom. And its also said that the use of Blood Bending was driving her mad. That it began to splinter her mind and her sin of wrath, slowly turned into Midnight's sin. The sin of insanity." I said. "I thought a vampire would only have a sin of insanity if they don't eat." (Y/N) muttered. I shook my head. "Vampires can be driven to insanity as well, albeit we're harder to drive insane than humans." I explained. I hummed a little, looking at (Y/N). "Hey. Come with me for a minute." I said, grabbing her hand. I snapped my fingers and we popped into the element room. A room dived into four separate areas each pertaining to one of the four elements. "Lets have a crash course on the elements while we're at it." I said with a smirk. I brought her over to the fire side which was made of cooled volcanic rock and had multiple fires lit.
"Fire is a wild element. Its strong and extremely fierce. But fickle in nature. The element of fire is playful." I said, I shifting to stand back to back with (Y/N) as she stared into one of the roaring flames. "Fire users normally have sins of Pride or Wrath. Sometimes Lust. Fire is temperamental like the sin of Wrath. Its a symbol of Pride for many. And the fires of Lust, passion, and love for another person can do dangerous things when tempted." I said. I let my voice lower slightly. "But for as beautiful as fire is, don't let it fool you. Fire can be Greedy in the most extreme of circumstances. It will burn and consume for as long as its allowed to run free. Fire users walk a fine line between vamp and monster. If they aren't careful, the flames will consume them as well. Fire is a dangerous element to master. And the users of this element must be careful to the upmost extreme. Fire users have to be disciplined. But that doesn't stop us from retaining fire's playful nature." I said with a smirk. I led her over to the Water half of the room.
A small river ran through, breathing life into the fresh green plants. "Water is fast and flexible. Just like Water users. They're calm, still, and silent. Like the surface of a lake. But swift and precise, like a river. However, Water moves down a flowing path, for it cares not where it goes. Water users normally adapt easily to change." I explained. (Y/N) knelt down and stuck her hand into the water. "Really it depends on the Water user. They can be like the still surface of the lake. Follow an easy going flow like a river. Or they can be mysterious and temperamental like the ocean. Water users, like their element, are easily flexible and adapt quickly. But push them enough and well..." I trailed off with a small smirk. "Lets just say, the feeling of drowning is not fun." I said. "Feel the way the currents move and shift around your hand. Water is an element of healing. And of great strengths. And just like the tides, Water users rise with the moon. Just as Fire users rise with the sun. Water is the opposing element of fire. Making it an element I'm weak too in a sense. Fire and Water don't mix." I explained. She stood up and we moved to the next area. The Air side.
I let her sit on one of the highest rocks, positioned where air and breezes from the outside come through. "Air is very similar to Water. In fact, the two are almost identical. And they both share a sub-division of gasses. Normally Air and Water users are pretty similar. Meaning they get along really well. But while Water follows a set path, Air goes wherever it pleases." I said. "Users of the Wind and the Air are very strong and very temperamental. For the Winds are ever changing and ever moving. It goes where it wants, and yet its all around us. Control over the Air and Winds takes high discipline. But they're clever. Air users, while temperamental, are good planners. And are as strong and unforgiving as the Winds themselves." I said. (Y/N) took a deep breath, letting her eyes close. "Air users can sense shifts in the Air around them. Some of them powerful enough to control the Weather or sense when someone is coming without sight or sound. They can feel different Air currents and ride as light and as weightless as the air itself. They are flexible and fast. Temperamental yet disciplined. An Air user that doesn't control their emotions is a dangerous person to cross." I explained. (Y/N) got down from the ledge and I led her over to the Earth side, letting her sit down.
"Feel the dirt, the rocks, and the sand underneath you. Earth users are strong and sturdy like the rocks they control. They are unmoving, stubborn, and strong willed. And they almost never crumble under pressure." I said, placing a hand on her shoulder. "And even if they do crumble, they come back stronger and reformed. Earth is the opposing element to Air." I added. "Earth users are connected to all living things. They have a special connection to each and every plant, every animal, even humans or other vampires. Earth users listen with their ears and their hearts rather than their sight." I explained. "Angering an Earth user takes quite a lot. But when they do anger, all hell breaks loose. For an Earth user has the power of one of the most dangerous elements. Because while Water and Air are flexible, and sometimes temperamental, Earth and Fire are the most prone to Wrath." I said. I sat next to her, gently pushing her hand into the dirt. "Feel the way the ground moves. Look not with your eyes but with your ears. With your nose. With your touch. Feel the vibrations in the ground and listen as the Earth moves." I said softly. "Earth users, while strong and powerful, are known also for being good listeners and being kind souls. And Earth users that are truly good listeners, the extremely intelligent, the masters, they can control the plants, they can control metal, and they can even learn to speak with animals." I said. I smiled softly as (Y/N) closed her eyes, breathing out softly. "Some humans can have a deep connection with the Earth. Werewolves and many other creatures have that same deep connection as well. Its not just vampires." I said.
(Y/N)'s eyes opened. "Someone's coming." She said. Just then the door opened and Asano walked in. "Thought I smelled strawberries. What are you two doing in here?" He asked. "Just teaching (Y/N) a few things on the elements. No big deal." I said dismissively. Asano smirked a little. "Oh I see. You think she might be getting elemental magic." He said. "Its a possibility." I commented while shrugging. With that me, Asano, and (Y/N) headed to the throne room. Apparently I had guests as well. But my eyes kept wandering back to (Y/N). She picked up pretty quickly that Asano was there....maybe Earth is her element... I thought.
