Chapter 8: Valkyrie Queen

Kara sat on the branch of the look out tree. Night had settled in, the cold nipping at her fur. The Godlings had all gone to bed, as did most of the Valkyries.

Most of them, she could see Rota flying in from a late night patrol to the border. When she came closer, Kara noticed the rather fat squirrel in her mouth. The black tabby landed in the snow, below the look out tree. She placed the squirrel down, before looking up to Kara.

"Don't mind if I share a midnight snack with you?" Rota asked, to which Kara chuckled.

"Sure, come on up. You have much better eyes then I do, you can help me as we eat," Kara said, before scooting out of the way to let Rota sit next to her.

The black tabby flew up, her squirrel in tow, and settled down beside her. "Caught it fresh from Vanahiem. They seem to be doing fine there," Rota said, pushing the fat squirrel to the other.

Kara couldn't help but lick her lips and take a bite. She hadn't had a good meal since Fimbulwinter had started, besides that time Svalinn and Atreus took out the elk the other day.

It was still warm, much to her delight. The meat was tender and easy to bite, and the fur was soft against her whiskers.

"This is so good, thank you for letting me have a bite," Kara said, licking her lips and pushing the squirrel back to Rota.

The Valkyrie of Judgement chuckled. "It's not problem, I figured it would be good to treat ourselves every once in a while. Shame we can't stay in Vanahiem forever, the Godlings are better on here in Midgard than there."

Kara nodded her head. There weren't mere as many threats in Midgard then there were in Vanahiem. Drakres and serpents the size of fully grown trees, the thought made the calico shiver.

Rota looked out towards the forest, her eyes focused as she started out into the territory. "Kara... have you noticed it?"

Kara turned to her, her ear flicking. "Notice what?"

"Sigrun... she's off. When I met her in the sky, I got this... feeling. The way she snapped at Eir was weird too. Even if Sigrun was tired, it was so strange to see her snap at Eir..."

Kara lowered her head slightly, her ears falling back. "I did notice... I heard Estrid and her speak the other day, about the poisonous gas, but the gas of Neiflhiem doesn't effect Gods and Valkyries..."

Rota nodded her head. "The gas doesn't even make cats delirious, Gods or not. I don't know what is going on, but my gut it telling me to stay alert," Rota whispered.

Kara nodded her head. "I will, I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling the same way."

Rota didn't speak, her ear suddenly perked as she stared out to the forestline, hearing a branch snap off in the distance. It was too far out to worry about, it was probably a dead tree who could no longer handle the snow.

Kara glanced over to Rota, lowering her head again. "Rota, I have a question," Kara whispered.

Rota flicked her tail in acknowledgement, her eyes still staring out to the trees. Kara took it as a means to continue, and she looked down towards the Community Den.

"Who... who is that young tom? The one with the bobbed tail?" Kara asked.

"Atreus? He's an outsider, I was told he was the son of the White Lion of Sparta. They were here in Camp before," Rota answered.

"Well, that I know. I didn't know he was the White Lion's son... he looks like-"

"You?"

Kara snapped out of her gaze towards Rota. They're eyes locked, and for a moment, Kara saw her reflection in the Valkyrie's eyes.

She looked away, her head still hung low. "That... wasn't what I was going to say. He looks so happy here, with Valor and Yrsa, and everyone else... besides François, of course."

Rota gave a small chuckle. "Yeah, you could say that again."

They went back to taking turns, snacking on the squirrel from time to time. Before long, the dawn light crept in, bringing a new day.

A loud booming voice was heard announcing Fimbulwinter has arrived. A discussion chain will be place for everyone to discuss what this means and what to do.
