Chapter One
I got a million on my soul, I go build an army on my own. They put a bounty in my soul; Won't you leave me alone more, oh leave me alone more. I gotta be a man, I gotta be a man--Alexiane, A Million On My Soul.

Valerian drop kicked the man in front of him, sending him to the floor and whipped his gun from his leg holster, aiming it at the man's head. Valerian needed to get to the hangar of the ship to meet up with Laureline. They had gotten what they came for and now they needed to leave.
He pulled the trigger without any hesitation and sprinted down the long corridor, firing his weapon at anyone who tried to stop him. Just as he reached the hangar a humanoid came out of nowhere and swung a machete at him. Valerian skidded and dodged backwards, the blade narrowly missing his nose. He came back up and grabbed the humanoid's arm, raising his leg and kneeing him in the stomach before flipping him over onto his back.
Valerian didn't wait for him to get back up before he kicked him in the face, effectively knocking the humanoid unconscious. Sprinting across the hangar that was starting to slowly fill up with humanoids, he started waving for Laureline to start up Alex, their spaceship knowing she was already onboard.
Valerian was almost caught off guard by a humanoid jumping out at him from a dark corner and he twisted his body so that the alien missed. Valerian could see Laureline in the cockpit as she started giving Alex orders to prepare for takeoff. He climbed up onto a bunch of crates and began running along them as the ship began to lift a few feet off the ground.
Valerian could hear Laureline's voice through his earpiece, cursing and ordering him to hurry up. He panted his own response and he jumped onto another stack of crates before gravity seemed to change and the ship they were still on shook violently.
Valerian pitched to the side unable to keep his balance and fell off of the stack of crates. He hit the floor hard, landing on his side and a grunt of pain escaped his lips. As much as he wanted to just lay there and get his breath back, he knew he couldn't because unless he wanted to die, he had to get up. So winded, he pushed himself to his feet and broke out into a run, barely dodging an alien humanoid who had managed to catch up to him.
Valerian sprinted full speed toward the spaceship, knowing the humanoid he managed to evade was hot on his heels. Once he was close enough to the ship he ran up a beam and jumped. His fingers grabbed hold of the edge of the ramp leading to the cargo bay and he hoisted himself up into it.
He had no idea just how close the humanoid had been until someone rammed into him, sending him flying back and to the floor. Grimacing, he looked up to see the alien looming over him. Sizing the alien up, he became a bit nervous. This thing was three times his size and was intimidating as hell.
Valerian scrambled to his feet as the alien advanced toward him. He pulled his gun but the alien knocked his gun from his hands. Not having any other option, Valerian fought the alien hand to hand.
The humanoid punched him in the gut and doubling over from the pain, the alien was able to slam Valerian against the wall of the cargo bay hard. He dropped to the floor as the alien threw a punch at the wall where his head had just been.
Valerian rolled to the side and stood up jumping back when the alien swung around aiming a fist at him. He knocked the humanoids arms to out of the way, jabbed him in the side with his hand, hooked his foot around the back of his ankle and yanked while placing his hand on the aliens chest and putting pressure on it in such a quick succession that anyone else wouldn't have even seen it happen.
The alien hit the floor hard on his back and Valerian started for his gun lying on the floor at the other end of the cargo bay. The humanoid grabbed his foot and pulled him off balance, causing him to fall and hit his head on a metal box on the way down.
Groaning in pain, Valerian tried to sit up but the pain in his head prevented him from doing such an action. It felt as if his head was splitting in half and squeezing his eyes shut, tried to block out the pain as he slowly pushed himself up and began to stumble toward his gun. He felt the alien grab him by his jacket and he was slammed on the floor.
Hands wrapped around his throat and Valerian shouted hoarsely at the alien. "Get off of me!"
The alien ignored him and pulled a knife from behind him, raising it over Valerian's chest. He knew what the alien was about to do and he lashed out at the alien, clipping it in the jaw with his fist and making the humanoid jerk back enough that he could shove him back and struggle to get to his feet.
Valerian blinked when he started seeing double and stopped trying to climb to his feet. Shit, this is bad. I might have a concussion, Valerian thought.
The humanoid loomed over him raising the knife and then two shots rang out, making the humanoid jerk twice before falling on its side. Valerian sat up and breathed a sigh of relief when Laureline's face was who he saw.
"Alex said you needed help." Laureline deadpanned, brushing her blond hair out of her face and walking over to him.
"She wasn't wrong." Valerian told her as she helped him to his feet. The bay area spun around him and he swayed on his feet, nearly falling over. The only thing keeping him on his feet at all was Laureline.
"Alex, run a biometric scan on Valerian for any serious injuries he may have." Laureline told their AI (Artificial Intelligence) Alex who was also their spaceship.
"Yes Laureline." Alex spoke. Moments later Alex began speaking once again. "I have run a biometric scan on Valerian. He has a stage three concussion, a few bruised ribs, and he may have a hairline fracture in his skull."
Valerian glanced at Laureline, his eyes unfocused and glazed over as she said, "Is it anything life threatening?"
Valerian collapsed to the ground unconscious before he hit the floor just as Laureline finished her sentence. Laureline rolled her eyes and Alex spoke over the intercom.
"Nothing medical attention can't fix. Just be prepared for if he passes out on you."
Laureline huffed. "He already did."
