____________________________________________________________________________________

Nagi was quite enjoying himself at :Re. The adults were nice to him, the customers were fun to talk to, and he got to go back to school. He lived with Kimi and Nishiki in their tiny apartment a little ways from :Re. He didn't fully trust Nishiki for a while because he was the one that stabbed a hole through him on the day he was brought to :Re, no matter how many times Nishiki said it was necessary. He liked Kimi though. She was extremely nice to him, and made him feel like he actually had a mother.

In the back of :Re, there was an old piano. It wasn't anything special, just a regular upright brown piano that was pushed up against the wall. Nagi was fascinated by it. He spent most of his afternoon hours pressing the keys and listening to the lovely sound that each one made. Kimi even told him all about famous composers she learned in school and how they made masterpiece after masterpiece. Nagi wanted to be like them, too. He wanted to write and perform songs that go down in history books. There was one small problem though.

Nagi had no idea how to read music or play the piano.

One average evening, after :Re had closed for the day, a person with purple hair knocked on the glass door. Kaneki rushed over to answer it, while Nagi stayed back and watched in fascination. Kaneki let the man in and the man immediately threw his head back and started yelling.

"Tresbien Kaneki-kun!!!! You never cease to delight me!!!!" The man yelled, and tried to wrap his arms around Kaneki. Kaneki swiftly pushed away his arms.

"Tsukiyama it's nice to see you again," Kaneki said politely.

So the man's name is Tsukiyama, Nagi thought. He made nothing of it and assumed that Tsukiyama and Kaneki were going to do serious adult things like taxes or sending e-mails or whatever adult things adults do. There was no need for him to linger, so he went and sat at the piano in the back. He pressed on the key that was in the middle of the other keys and listened for the rich sound of the piano to fill the air. He played the keys after that one, and listened as the sound got higher and higher. He was so immersed in his playing, that he didn't notice Tsukiyama come up behind.

"And who might this young one be?" He asked to no one in particular. Nagi looked over at Kaneki and silently asked him if Tsukiyama was okay to talk to. Kaneki gave a nod in response.

"My name is Nagi Mikado," Nagi stated. He sat up a little straighter and puffed out his chest. In the corner of his eye, he saw Touka and Kaneki laughing softly at him, saying things like oh he's so cute, and I wish I had a video camera. Nagi paid them no mind because he wanted Tsukiyama to get the impression that he was not to be messed with.

Tsukiyama laughed and ruffled his hair (to which Nagi gave a pout) and said, "I'm Tsukiyama Shuu, pleasure to meet you. Your smell is very.......... curious. Could you be..." before Tsukiyama could finish his statement, Kaneki had strode over and jabbed his side. They whispered for a few seconds, before Tsukiyama turned to Nagi.

"Do you like the piano, Nagi-chan?" Tsukiyama inquired.

' "I like it alot, but I don't know how to play or how to read music," Nagi complained. He settled into his cute little pout again.

"What a shame. How about we fix that?" Tsukiyama said.

Nagi's face visibly brightened as Tsukiyama sat down next to him on the wooden piano bench. He showed Nagi the basics of the piano, like where the notes were positioned, and even got into a little into how to read music.

After this moment, Tsukiyama would come to :Re at least once a week to teach Nagi the piano. He brought books with basic songs and papers of staff lines so that Nagi could practice reading music as well as playing. Sometimes Nagi even put words to the songs they played and sang them while playing. He had a lot of fun when playing the piano. For Nagi, it was like going to his own secret place and escaping from things like his past trauma, studies, and the mean kids at school.

Nagi played whenever he wanted to, but never while the shop was open. However, the workers of :Re encouraged him to do so. They were all very proud of their little Na-chan, and wanted him to show off. Therefore, one day he sat down at the bench of that piano while the shop was bustling with customers. He opened the book that Tsukiyama gave to him, and turned to page that had the song, "Silent Night" on it. Tsukiyama told him that this was a simpler version of the actual song, he didn't want to give Nagi the actual version of the song because his fingers weren't big enough to reach all the notes in the song.

Nagi played through the song and was met with a shower of applause from the customers and staff. Nagi didn't even realize they were listening to his playing. He felt pride swell in his chest as his eyes swept through the crowd. One old lady next to him pinched his cheek and asked, "What's your name, sweetheart?"

Nagi stood on the piano bench and stated loudly for everyone to hear, "My name is Nagi Mikado and soon, I will be the best musician the world will ever hear about!!"
