Death in Your Eyes (part 2)

(So... plot change, I don't think I could write what was originally planned)

(Press' POV)

Tobin came back into our room after dinner, and all color was drained from her face. She sat on her bed and put her head in her hands. "Toby?" I sat up. "Are you okay? Did you get sick?"

Tobin shook her head and came over and sat next to me. She pulled me into her arms and I felt her tears drip onto me. "Tobin, what's wrong? What happened? Are you okay?"

She didn't answer me, but after a few minutes she sat up, wiped her eyes, and grabbed my hand. She sniffled before speaking. "Jill had a meeting during dinner, we've got some bad news."

"Hey, whatever it is, I'm sure everything is fine," I squeezed her hand.

She sighed. "Mal got in a car crash."

...

I was extremely close to throwing up the entire drive to the hospital, and not because of how sick I already was. I was so worried about Mal, I could barely breathe.

We pulled into the hospital and Tobin helped me out. We entered and asked for Mal, they told us she was in surgery, so we could hang out in the waiting room for her. Tobin paced back and forth, but I could barely move. Before we knew it, Kelley was there, her freckled face set on a worried expression. She said nothing, but stood in front of Tobin, grabbing her arms to force her to stop pacing. She then put her hands on Tobin's shoulders, taking a deep breath. Tobin mirrored her breaths, and then Kelley pulled her into a hug.

I remembered that from a few months ago, when Tobin got stressed before a game. She and Kelley always knew how to calm each other down. That made me a bit jealous at times, but it was nice to know that someone cared about Tobin, almost as much as I did.

Kelley then moved Tobin to sit next to me, and then she herself sat on the other side of me. She pulled me into a hug, and I sobbed on her chest. I felt her hand run up and down my back, and the movement comforted me. I sniffled as she pulled away, giving me and Tobin both a sympathetic smile. Tobin leaned her head on my shoulder, and I grabbed Kelley's hand.

We were going to stay here all night if we had to.

...

Mal got out of surgery at two a.m. They wouldn't let us see her until eight a.m. We left and managed to get around five hours asleep, before Tobin woke up and shook me awake. We went to Kelley and HAO's room, and Tobin texted Kelley we were leaving, so not to wake HAO. Kelley came out and we all walked to the car.

At the hospital, they told us that for now we were only allowed to go one at a time, because too much excitement could cause her to go into cardiac arrest. Tobin and Kelley pushed me to go in first, even though I was rather nervous. I walked quietly into her room and sat at a chair by her bed.

She looked up at me with her big brown eyes. "Hey baby girl," I whispered, moving a lock of her brown hair out of her face. "How're you feeling?"

"Mama, what are you doing here? You're sick, you should be resting."

I chuckled. Leave it to Mal to think of anyone but herself at this time. "I'm feeling a lot better sweetheart," I kissed her head.

"What about Moe? And JJ? And Ali? How are they? I know Jay probably had it the worst, poor thing..."

She stopped talking as she saw me giggling. "What?" she got defensive.

"You," I booped her nose. "You just got out of surgery after being hit by a car, and you're worried about everyone with some dumb stomach bug."

"Well they're my friends, and basically my family," she sniffled. "I don't want anything to happen to them."

I smile down at her. "They're going to be fine," I place a kiss on her temple, lingering a little longer than I usually did.

She takes my hand and I rub her knuckles gently. I knew this camp was going to be hard, but I didn't realize everything that was going to happen. I was not emotionally prepared for this, but I had to stay strong for her.

"Baby girl, I need to let Tobin and Kelley see you," I whispered, releasing her hand.

"Kelley's here?" she seemed to perk up a bit.

"Yup, Kelley was so worried about you. She met us here last night too."

Mal smiled. "Okay Mama, but you have to come back after they're finished, promise?"

"I promise Malley-O."

I left the room and Tobin walked straight in. Kelley let me sob in her arms, but this time it wasn't tears of worry and sadness. This time it was tears of relief and happiness. Mal was going to be okay.

...

Two days later they released her from the hospital. Tobin and I drove her back to the hotel, and helped her gently into her and JJ's room. She had broken her left leg, along with the internal bleeding she had the surgery for.

"Hey Mal," JJ greeted. "How are you?"

"Could be better," Mal shrugged. "But also could be worse. How are you feeling?"

"A lot better," she smiled. "I think everyone is, just some stupid 24 hour bug."

"That's good, I was worried sick," Mal stated.

"You were worried? Do you understand what you put us through?"

Mal laughed, scratching the back of her neck. "Yeah, sorry about that."

"It's fine," JJ sat next to her on her bed. "So how long are you out?"

"Two months," she groaned.

JJ gave her a small smile. "Hey, it could have been a lot worse."

There was a knock at the door then and Tobin got up to answer it. It was Moe. "Hey baby Mal," she greeted playfully. "How's the leg?"

"Eh," she responded, then her eyes went wide with realization. "Oh my God Moe I totaled your car, I'm so so sorry! I'll pay for it I swear-"

"Shut up," Moe interrupted her. "One, you need to focus on you, not my car. Two, insurance is paying for all of it, don't worry. The guy ran and red light and was drunk, so it was obviously his fault."

Mal smiled and I saw the relief wash over her. Moe got on the other side of her and she, JJ, and Mal just laid there, talking and laughing and just generally being kids. Tobin put her arm around me, and it was at that moment that I knew everything would be okay.
