railing
The wind whipped at Chan's hair, threatening to tear the beanie off his head. He shivered, pulling his jacket tighter around him as he surveyed the city lights twinkling below.
He wandered towards the edge of the terrace, the railing a cold metal barrier against the dizzying drop. Below, the city stretched out like a glittering tapestry, a breathtaking sight that filled him with awe.
Then he saw him.
A figure leaning over the railing, his shoulders slumped, his head bowed. Chan's heart lurched. He knew that posture. He'd seen it before, countless times in documentaries, in news reports.
Panic clawed at his throat. He had to do something.
Without thinking, he sprinted towards the figure, his boots pounding against the rooftop tiles. He reached out, grabbing the stranger's arm and pulling him back with all his might.
The man stumbled, losing his balance momentarily before regaining it with a startled gasp.
"Hey! What the-"
Chan ignored the protest, his voice trembling with urgency. "Don't do it! Please, don't do it!"
The man stared at him, bewildered. "Do what? What are you talking about?"
Chan gestured vaguely towards the edge of the terrace. "Jump! You were about to jump!"
The man finally seemed to understand. He chuckled, a low, amused sound. "Oh, no, I wasn't. I was just... admiring the view." He gestured towards the city lights below. "It's quite spectacular, isn't it?"
An awkward silence followed. Chan, unsure of what to say, kicked at a loose pebble on the ground. "Well," he began, "I guess that's that, then. You weren't going to jump, and I... I overreacted."
"No worries," the man said, his voice a little softer now. "It's understandable. You were just looking out for me."
"Yeah," Chan said, relieved that the tension had eased. "So, uh... what's your name?"
"Felix," the man replied.
"I'm Chan."
"Nice to meet you, Chan."
"You too, Felix."
They fell into an easy silence, both taking in the breathtaking view of the city. After a moment, Felix turned to Chan, a curious expression on his face. "You know, your accent... it sounds familiar."
Chan shrugged. "I'm Australian."
Felix's eyes widened. "Me too! I was just thinking the same thing about you. Where in Australia are you from?"
"Sydney," Chan replied.
"No way! Me too!" Felix exclaimed, a wide grin spreading across his face. "This is crazy! What are the odds of meeting another Aussie here?"
Chan laughed, a genuine, heartfelt laugh. "I know, right? Small world. So, what brings you to Seoul?"
"Trainee life," Felix replied. "Long story short, I'm here to chase my dreams."
"Ah," Chan nodded understandingly. "Me too." He hesitated, then added, "I'm a trainee at JYP."
The boy's eyes widened. "No way! I'm at YG."
They fell into an easy conversation, the initial awkwardness forgotten. They talked about their training schedules, the grueling hours, the constant pressure to improve. They shared stories of their families, their friends, their dreams.
"You know," Felix said, gazing out at the twinkling city lights, "I used to come here a lot when I first arrived. It was overwhelming, you know? So many people, so much noise. But then I'd come up here, look out at the city, and it would all make sense."
Chan nodded in agreement. "I know exactly what you mean. It's like you can see the whole world spread out before you, all the possibilities, all the dreams."
Felix smiled. "Exactly. It's a reminder that no matter how lost you feel, you're not alone. You're part of something bigger."
Chan felt a strange sense of peace wash over him. He had come to Seoul chasing his dream, but sometimes the pressure, the competition, the constant self-doubt threatened to drown him. But talking to Felix, sharing his experiences, made him realize that he wasn't alone in this. There were others out there, facing the same challenges, chasing the same dreams. And maybe, just maybe, they could help each other along the way.
He looked at Felix, his eyes sparkling in the darkness, and a smile spread across his face. He had a feeling this was going to be a long and interesting journey.
