Chapter Twenty
New Year’s Eve, 1970
The year was ending and I couldn’t have been happier.
Some people were celebrating the great year they had and all of the things they have accomplished, but I was one of those people who were celebrating its end. Although there were a lot of great moments, I was glad that it was over.
I looked forward to 1971; it was like a fresh start for me and David. And the party was a great way to start a new beginning.
“You look great Emma, can we go now?” David impatiently asked.
“Just 5 more minutes!” I curled the last pieces of my hair.
“You said that 15 minutes ago!” He yelled from the living room.
I laughed and finished up my hair before looking over myself in the mirror. I smoothed out the creases on my outfit and turned off the bathroom light before putting on my coat.
“I’m so sick of winter.” I muttered. My breath could be seen in the cold air.
David held the cab door open for me before closing it once we got in. “Where to, Mr. Gilmour?” The driver asked politely.
“We should pick up Rick I guess,” David spoke to himself before blurting out Rick’s address. He sat back in his seat and put his arm around me. I looked out the window at the people who were already drunk, stumbling down the icy roads.
“What was the best New Year’s you’ve ever had?” I asked him.
He thought for a moment and then shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe the first one we spent together.”
I looked back out the window and thought of that memory. “Really? Because you got pretty damn drunk that night. Roger and I had to carry you home, Christ sakes.” I laughed.
“It was still fun!” He added.
We pulled up in front of Ricks’ house and David went inside to get him. I sat silently in the backseat and the driver turned down the radio.
“Do you have any New Year’s resolutions?” He asked.
“I haven’t put much thought into it.” I laughed. “Do you?”
He looked in his review mirror to make eye contact with me. “No, I guess I don’t have one either.”
“Well maybe you’ll figure one out by the end of the night.” I encouraged.
“Same goes for you.”
The car door swung open and David and Rick hurried in. I shivered at the cold wind that rushed in with them.
David pressed his cold hands on my neck and laughed as I jumped up. “Stop it!” I giggled.
I looked at Rick and gave him a friendly smile. “Are we ready to go?” The driver asked.
“Let’s go!” David sang.
The party we were all going to was a typical rockstar party in downtown London. It was rumored that Led Zeppelin would be there, and to my surprise, David didn’t seem to really care. We were over and done with that argument anyway.
Once we met up with the rest of the band, we sat at a booth around the circular tables. Nick and Roger came back with drinks for everyone and before we started, we made a cheer.
“We’ve got a whole new year ahead of us, boys. Fuck that, we have years ahead of us!” Roger anticipated.
“I couldn’t be more grateful to know all of you, really.” I admitted. “You’re all such good friends.”
“We love having you around, Em!” Nick smiled.
Soon enough, a joint was being passed around the table. I wasn’t even sure if pot smoking was aloud in the club, but I don’t think any of us cared.
And it was only a matter of hours until everyone wasn’t in the sober state of mind anymore.
David leaned in close to me and started to kiss my neck, but I gently pushed him off because I knew that the others would feel a bit awkward. I guess David took this as a challenge and reached over to kiss my lips, but he hit my drink with his arm and it spilled all over me.
“Ah fuck, I’m so sorry, babe.” David apologized and picked up the drink. I stood up and got out of the booth so I could wash it off myself in the bathroom. Luckily, I was wearing black pants so it wasn’t that noticeable.
I spent about 10 minutes dabbing a wet paper towel on the spill, but I still smelt like booze. I figured that there was nothing left that I could do, so I walked back out and headed for the table.
But when I got out, I actually had no idea where I was going. Every area of the club was swarmed with people, and in my drunk and high state; I forgot which way the booth was. I aimlessly walked around for a little bit until I ran into someone which created the biggest Déjà-Vu moment.
“Oh, you’re here!” Robert Plant cheered. I tried not to smile, but I did. “You look lovely.”
“Thanks.” I felt my cheeks blush. This was so wrong and I knew that I needed to get out of there.
“I’m surprised that you didn’t call me, I would have loved to get together with you.” He cocked an eyebrow as he smiled mischievously.
“Well I do have a boyfriend, you know.”
“Ah yes, Roger Waters, right?”
“David Gilmour.” I corrected. I tried to look away, but he came in closer to me. I could practically smell the sex lingering off of him.
“You’re hard to get, aren’t you?” He asked.
“I’m not hard to get, you just won’t get me.” I counter argued.
He smiled. “You’re going to play that game?”
“It’s not a game.”
He examined me for a moment. He looked up and down my body and then locked his eyes with mine. “I’ll have you one day, Miss Emma.” He smirked.
“Don’t count on it.”
He gave me a wink and then turned around, his golden hair bounced at the motion of his head.
It felt like my heart dropped to the floor. I just turned down the lead singer of Led fucking Zeppelin.
But honestly, David was worth it. No matter how charming and flirty Robert Plant could be, he could never win my heart. David knew everything about me, and I can’t see anyone else knowing as much as he does. I can’t see myself being with anyone besides him, to put it simply.
“What took you so long?” David asked me when I finally made my way back to the booth.
“I couldn’t find my way back.” I told him. “Did you know that Led Zeppelin actually is here?”
“Yeah.”
“I ran into Robert again.” I said casually. He looked at me and waited for me to continue. “Nothing happened.” I reassured. “We talked, that’s all. No numbers, nothing.”
David smiled and pulled me in for a kiss. “I love you, Emma.”
“I love you too.”
And for once, it felt good to do the right thing.
We sat around for a while more, until we decided to go outside for a moment. Well, I decided to and dragged David along with me because I was literally dying of heat in there. I drunkenly gazed up above me but the night sky was over casted with clouds. I didn’t even realize how cold it was; I couldn’t really feel it anyways.
“I think I know what my New Year’s resolution is now.”
“Yeah?”
“Try to keep myself out of trouble.” I laughed. “No more people like Vickie, no more acid, no more bumping into other rockstars… I just want to focus on you and me.”
He wrapped his arms around me and pressed his nose up against mine. “That sounds like a great resolution.”
“I want this to be an amazing year.”
“We’ll make it the best we can, my love.”
Just then, the fireworks skyrocketed into the night sky and lit everything up so perfectly.
“Oh look at that! Happy New Years, baby.” He pulled me in and kissed me tenderly.
“1971.” David intertwined his fingers with mine.
We looked up at the sky as the fireworks exploded into so many vibrant colours.
The year couldn’t have started more perfectly.
