Chapter Sixteen
I swore in my head a thousand times as I heard her footsteps coming up the stairs. I threw on the shirt I was wearing before and brushed my hands through my hair, but David was still hopping into his jeans. Luckily, he did them up just before she opened the door.
However, he didn’t have his shirt on.
“Emma-” she stopped mid-sentence once she saw David.
I looked at them both; they had this awkward stare going on between them. David stood so tall compared to her, but she could have taken him down in a simple push.
“We were jumping in the snow when we got here, his shirt got all wet.” I lied to the best of my ability.
I held my breath and looked at David, who seemed to be doing the same thing too. I looked back at my mother without saying a word.
“Well, are you going to give your mother a hug?” She smiled and spread out her arms.
I let out the deep breath I was holding and wrapped my arms around her as she tightly squeezed me.
She let go and I smiled at David.
--
“Is beer fine?” she asked him at the dinner table.
“Yes, thank you!” David said happily.
“Not a problem, dear.” She sat back down.
I was just as surprised as David was. Last time we saw her she was cold and bitter, now she was so happy and full of life. Luckily, she didn’t walk in sooner on David and I.
We finished up supper and my mother started to pick the plates up off the table.
“Sit down, Mrs. Hale, I can clean up!” He insisted.
I nervously bite down on my lip once David referred to my mother as Mrs. Hale. I looked at her as she stared blankly at the table, then she spoke.
“Just call me Sharon, darling.” She replied softly.
David was such a sweetheart. He treated my mother like a fucking queen; probably because he wanted to get on her good side. It was rather hilarious, in a way.
We sat around in the living room for a while, chatting away as the radio played in the background. It made me so happy to see them on good terms… because who knows? We could all be one, big, happy family one day.
The thing that I love most about winter, are the cozy nights in. I loved wrapping myself in a blanket on a couch as I cuddled up beside David. I loved the smell of coffee and tea that lingered around in the air. It was always such a pretty season.
“Did you hear a knock at the door?” I asked.
I heard the faint tapping on the door again so I got up to go answer it. When I opened the door a cold wind hit me, making me shiver.
“Hey, Em.”
I stood wide-eyed, completely surprised. I didn’t expect my brother Aaron to show up so unexpectedly.
I hugged him tightly, seeming that I haven’t seen him in such a long time. I think what made this little reunion so much better, was the fact that his wife wasn’t with him. I’m not even sure why the hell he married her.
“Look who I found!” I joked.
My mom stood up and gave him a hug. I could have sworn that she was in tears. She let go and went into the kitchen to get him a cup of tea.
“David, this is my brother, Aaron.” I introduced. “Aaron, this is David Gilmour.”
He stared at him while shaking his hand, and then it clicked in. “Wait, you’re the David Gilmour?”
He laughed. “Yeah, that’s me.”
Aaron’s reaction was priceless. He tried to speak but his words came out so quickly and he didn’t make sense. I couldn’t help but laugh.
“You never told me you were dating the guitarist of Pink Floyd!” He exclaimed.
I shrugged my shoulders and laughed. David sat down with Aaron and listened to him ramble on and answered his questions. I walked into the kitchen where my mom was waiting for the kettle to go off.
“Can I ask you something?” I stood by the table.
“Sure.”
“How come you’re so nice towards David now?” I asked.
She looked around and then let a deep breath out. “There’s no point in holding a grudge against someone.”
“That makes sense.”
She took the kettle off and poured the water into a cup. “I knew that you weren’t going to leave him, so I told myself to get over it.” She chuckled.
“What do you mean?”
“I never wanted my daughter to date a rockstar. I didn’t want you to become involved with that kind of world.” She looked at me. “You were my last chance of having a child who turned out to be successful.”
I was honestly taken aback by what she said. “I’m happier than ever right now. I live in a beautiful apartment with a wonderful boyfriend and we have lots of money and we're in good health... what more could I ever want? To me, that’s a pretty successful and rewarding life.”
She sighed and brought the cup into the living room. I was left standing alone in the kitchen until I finally joined everyone again.
Despite my mother’s cold words towards me, it was the perfect little family reunion. It’s amazing how David can pull together such a broken family.
“Goodnight! It was nice seeing you again, Aaron.” I hugged my brother tightly.
“Yeah, you too. Hey, you and David should come out to see Allie and I one day.”
I practically cringed at the mention of her name. I have no idea what Aaron saw in Allie; she was quite the character.
“That would be nice!” I lied. I went to turn away but Aaron pulled me back.
“Listen,” he spoke quietly. “I think it’s amazing how you and David lasted this long, but don’t expect it forever, Em. He’s a rockstar, and we all know how they act.”
Was everyone on my back about dating David?
--
I pulled the sheets over me and cuddled up beside David. I always thought that my bed was the comfiest bed ever. It was silent for a while as I listened to the cold wind blow against the house, making it creak and crack.
“So I guess you’re not terrified of my mother anymore?” I giggled.
“No,” he laughed. “But she was acting weird. I don’t know, maybe it was just me being nervous.”
I could’ve told him what my mother and Aaron said to me about him, but some things are better left unsaid.
