The Gunny Wolf (Africa)
Once upon a time, a long time ago, there lived a mother and her little girl and they lived right at the edge of the jungle. Everyday, the mother would get up and cook breakfast for her little girl.
Then, before she went to work, she'd turn to her little girl and say, "Little girl, don't ever, ever go into the jungle."
And the little girl would look at her mother and say, "Mama! I would never, ever go into the jungle!"
One day, the mother had to visit a friend and so she was in a rush to get her daughter fed and taken care of. Before she left, she turned to her daughter and as she always did, she said, "I must be on my way now but remember little girl, don't ever, ever go into the jungle!"
As usual, the little girl said, "Mama, I would never, ever go into the jungle."
The little girl watched her mother from the front porch until she was out of sight. The little girl turned to go back in her house but she saw, out the corner of her eye, the most beautiful little white flowers she had ever seen and they were just at the edge of the jungle. And little girl, she forgot everything that her mother had ever told her.
She went to the edge of the jungle and she began to to pick the flowers. And as she picked them, she sang, "Coo qua key wa!"
After she finished picking the flowers, she started to head back home but out of the corner of her other eye, she saw the most beautiful purple flowers she had ever seen and they were just a little ways into the jungle. And little girl, she forgot everything that her mother had ever told her.
She walked right into the jungle and began to pick the flowers. And as she picked them, she sang, "Coo qua key wa!"
She finished picking the flowers and started toward home when she saw the most beautiful, big orange flowers. And there they were, right in the middle of the jungle.
And little girl, she forgot everything that her mother had ever told her. She walked to the middle of the jungle and began to pick the flowers. And as she picked them, she sang, "Coo qua key wa! Coo qua key wa!"
By the time she had finished picking the flowers, she had a big beautiful bouquet all ready for her mother. And she stood up, and there stood the gunny wolf.
And the gunny wolf looked at her and said, "Little girl, sing me that guten sweeten song again!"
And the little girl very nervously, began to sing, "C-coo qua k-k-key wa!"
As she sang, the wolf fell asleep. And the little girl, she started to run. Pit pat pit pat pit pat! Then the gunny wolf, he woke and he started to run. Hunker chu hunker chu hunker chu!
When he caught up to little girl, the gunny wolf looked at her and said, "Little girl, why for you move?"
And the little girl said, "Who me? Why, I no move!"
The wolf said, "Well then, little girl, sing me that guten sweeten song again!"
The little girl started to sing, "Coo qua key wa! Coo qua key wa!"
The wolf again fell asleep, snoring loudly. And the little girl, she started to run! Pit pat pit pat pit pat! And the gunny wolf woke up and he started to run! Hunker chu hunker chu hunker chu!
And when he caught up to little girl, he said, "Little girl, why for you move?"
And little girl said, "I no move!"
The wolf said, "Well then, little girl, sing me that guten sweeten song again!"
The little girl started to sing, "Coo qua key wa! Coo qua key wa!"
The wolf, once again, fell asleep. He fell against an old tree and slid down to the ground, curled up into a ball, and fell asleep, snoring. And little girl, she began to run. Pit pat pit pat pit pat! And the gunny wolf woke up and he started to run. Hunker chu hunker chu hunker chu! Pit pat pit pat pit pat! The little girl ran into her house and slammed the door tight.
Little girl knew then: if she ever went into the jungle again, that she was always smarter and a lot quicker than that old gunny wolf.
