Scary Fairytales: The Rest of Them
The Hunchback of Notre Dame:
Much like in the Disney version, Frollo is overcome by his insane lust for Esmeralda. Torn between his lust for her and the strict rules of religion, he makes Esmeralda a deal: either she can marry him or he will burn her at the stake because he believes she has used witchcraft to make him fall for her.
She ends up being burnt and entombed in the catacombs. Frollo also dies in a horrifying and gruesome way. Quasimodo cannot live without Esmeralda and sneaks into her tomb. It's days later that he is dug up only to learn that he died from starvation.
Moana:
Disney almost got it right! However, in the original, Maui has four brothers and is the result of a good and a human, making him an actual demigod. Other than that, they seem to have got the story correct.
Pocahontas:
The story is based off of a real Indian princess named Pocahontas. However, in the original story, she was about 13 or 14 years old when she met John Smith who was about 40. They had no romantic relationship but more of a friendship.
Sometime later, Englishmen invaded the Indian lands. A man named John Rolfe took Pocahontas to his hometown for propaganda about her people. She never got home because she caught a disease or infection and died.
Brave:
Brave is an original story created by Disney.
Anastasia:
Anastasia is based off of a real woman who lost her entire family when monarchy was lost to the world.
Pinocchio:
The only difference between Disney and the original is that Pinocchio killed Jiminy and was haunted by his ghost. The Disney version, we can agree, however, is horrifying enough.
Lion King:
The first is loosely based off Hamlet while the second is loosely based off Romeo and Juliet.
Piped Piper/Peter Pan:
The Piped Piper was a take to explain how children vanished from their home at night.
Unlike the Disney version, Peter Pan was a cruel boy who hated adults so much he would kill them. He'd even kill his own lost boys if they grew too old!
(I put these together because in OUAT, Peter Pan is also the Piped Piper.)
Rumplestiltskin:
Follows the tale of a girl who's father vainly announces his daughter can spin straw into gold. The king locks her in a tower so she can prove it.
She gets help from an imp named Rumplestiltskin but only if she gives up her first born. When she becomes pregnant, she makes another deal that if she can guess his name in three days, she can keep her child.
Her servant overhears him singing and the princess guesses correctly that his name is Rumplestiltskin. He grows so angry that he gets his foot stuck in the floor and tears himself in half.
(Very gruesome, I'll admit but I can't think of that much since the part I remember most is the hilarity of when he accuses, "The witches told you! The witches told you!" As he was dancing with a gaggle of witches that night.)
The Swan Princess:
The story the Swan Princess is loosely based off of the Six Swans. The story was that a king had 6 sons and one daughter. The king remarried but his wife, who was a witch, turned the boys into swans.
The daughter sews 6 shirts from nettles to change them back into humans. While doing this, she cannot utter a single word or her brothers will die. A king falls in love with her and marries her.
They have three kids. But her mother-in-law doesn't like the queen and hides the children away. After losing three children, her son is forced to believe that she is a witch. They are set to burn her at the stake but still she cannot speak.
At the last moment, 6 swans burst through the window. She threw the shirts on them. She was able to tell her story. Her children were returned and her horrible mother-in-law fell in a pit and died.
Welp, I can't think of anymore. Let me know if you think of more and I'll put it on here!
