on gender diversity

y'know, i dont really mind if a cast is all female or all male. its not sexist. it's a choice on the creator. sometimes its even required by the setting.

my only prob is when ppl r like "look!! at this cast of all strong women!! take that, men!"
lots of ppl like to judge works by asinine things like the bechtel test or on how many pairs of tits are present- as if that dictates if a work is feminist.

for me, its quality over quantity. let's take, for example, fmab, bc its the pinnacle of all fiction. out of the loads and loads of characters, theres about, ,eh, maybe five relevant females? but, goodness, theyre all written amazingly. these girls arent "fanservice with legs" characters (no, lust isnt one. she had boobies, but she contributed to the plot and was an awesome villain. nothing wrong with a character being sexy). fmab has a diverse female cast, ranging from a stoic gunslinger to a motherly love interest.

compare this to, say, some nasty titty anime where the entire main cast is female...but theyre all shallow cut outs with fetish personalities taped on (tsundere, the one with glasses, the loli)

id rather have a show with 2 girls that are written great than a show with all girls thats disgusting, just saying.

sometimes, you just cant have a diverse cast. let's say youre making a show set in a womens prison. there...shouldnt be dudes, usually. ditto for war movies set before coed militaries. all boys/girls schools, too. in these settings, you cant really introduce a character of the opposite gender without employing crossdressing.

i dont see the trope of "theres only one character of the opposite sex in the cast" unless their personality is chalked down to "token girl" or "token boy." you see this in a lot of older shows- the powers that he made them throw in a random chick to spread out the appeal to girls in the audience. this character was usually pink, wore a bow, and was usually useless. this is bad.

i like to go for gender blind writing (unless it's a gender-specific thing, like a woman getting her period or w/e)

example: pidge from vld is not the "token girl." nor is allura. pidge is a well rounded character with good motivations and isnt useless (or saddled with some empathy/special girl power uwu). allura seems to be fated to this trope...but doesnt fall into it. shes very much in the action, either piloting the castle or fighting hand to hand. heck, i was kinda scared when she became the "pink padalin", but then they added in the 'pink is the color for fallen heroes in altea' and i really liked that. added even more depth to her.

likewise, steven being the only boy gem in su isnt bad either. while i would love a masculine gem (and my gem ocs are), it just...doesnt really matter.

a lot of magical girl shows have only female casts, its even in the name. some try to justify (yuki yuna is a hero was amazing in this regard. excellent twist 👌👌) the reasons for the magical girls only being girls. again, doesnt really matter. these are good shows regardless.

ditto for stuff like mp100. nearly all dudes, except for a few minor villains, mobs crush, and the girl in charge of the telepathy club. still really, really good.

i have no aversion to shows about a cast of all pretty boys (free) or all girls. as long as it aint insulting im good. write whatever gender you want. just make the story good, man.
