Chapter 12
As Jonathan and Jackie walked toward the school, they met up with Nancy, who was still going strong with Steve. Jackie saw the way Nancy looked and acted around Jonathan though, so she wasn't sure how long that was going to last. Standing at the front doors, was one of the more popular girls, Tina was handing out flyers for her Halloween party.
"Hey. Be there." She said, handing them to as many people as possible. Nancy walked in, with Jonathan right behind her. "Hey, Nancy."
"Hey! Thanks." Nancy accepted the bright orange paper and kept walking. Jonathan didn't even try to take one, but Jackie did. Nancy turned around, nearly making Jackie walk into her. "Hey, can I have another one?" She asked.
"Sure." Tina handed her another flyer and Nancy slapped it to his chest. Nancy usually just pretended that Jackie didn't exist for some reason. Jackie slipped back behind the two, not by choice, but because they were inching closer together.
"Come and get sheet faced." Jonathan exchanged a look with Jackie who just smirked in her friend's direction. "No, I'm not."
"I can't let you sit all alone Halloween. That's just not acceptable." Jackie almost joined their conversation, saying that her and Jonathan were going to take the boys trick-or-treating, but Jonathan was already using the excuse.
"Well, you can relax. I'm not gonna be alone. Jackie and I are gonna take Will and the boys trick-or-treating." He motioned behind him to Jackie, who pretended like she was going over her English paper and not eavesdropping on their conversation.
"All night?" Nancy asked, ignoring Jackie.
"Yeah."
"No, no way. You're gonna be home by 8:00. Listening to talking heads or reading Vonnegut or something." Jonathan shrugged.
"Sounds like a nice night. Right, Jackie?" Jackie looked up and gave a simple nod.
"Jonathan, just come. I mean who knows, you might even, like, meet someone." Nancy opened her locker and their conversation was interrupted by Steve Harrington running over and grabbing Nancy by the waist, and spinning her around. She shrieked and smacked his arm.
"Hey, I'm gonna go meet up with Betty and Lucy. Wanna come?" Jackie said, seeing how Jonathan looked really depressed as Nancy and Steve started making out.
"Yeah." It wasn't that Jonathan didn't like Jackie's friends, they were really nice and everything. He just didn't really know what to say or do around them. It didn't help that they were girls, and not terrible looking. They walked down the hallway to meet Betty and Lucy.
"Bea! Luce!" Jackie called out, gaining their attention. They were seated on a bench outside of someone's classroom and waved when Jackie called their names.
"J.R!" They both called back, Lucy enthusiastic, Betty playfully sarcastic. Jonathan and Jackie joined them on the bench, and Jackie pulled out and apple.
"Want a bite?" She asked her friends, not really caring about the germs and stuff.
"I do. I didn't eat breakfast." Betty complained, while Lucy politely declined.
"You never eat breakfast, idiot." Jackie dug in her bag before pulling out another apple and tossing it to her blonde friend.
"Oh, guess who we saw today?" Betty asked, Lucy put down the magazine she had been flipping through and turning her attention to the others. Jonathan settled himself on the end of the bench and pulled out his camera, cleaning off the lens.
"Who?" Jackie asked.
"The new guy. He's so hot!" Betty squealed. Lucy had clearly lost interest in the conversation as she went back to her magazine.
"Bea, you have a boyfriend. Don't forget that." Jackie reminded her. "Also that new guy is a grade-A asshole. He wolf-whistled at me as he walked by." Both their mouths dropped open.
"He what?!" Betty whispered.
"Whistled?" Jackie was slightly confused at her friends' reactions.
"You should talk to him! He probably likes you!" Betty teased. Lucy was the complete opposite.
"I wouldn't if I were you. That's an asshole move, you're right." Betty munched on the apple, shooting Lucy a look.
"We were just talking about how J.R needs a man!" She pushed. Lucy closed her magazine and turned to Jackie.
"We were talking about that. I said that it's your choice, but Bea disagrees. She seems to think it's her choice and that you need a boyfriend or you're gonna die." Jackie rolled her eyes.
"Just because you two have boyfriends, doesn't mean that I want one. And even if I did, who would want to date me?" Lucy and Betty shared a look. "Do you know something?" Jackie narrowed her eyes at the two.
"Maybe," Betty said playfully. Jackie turned to Lucy.
"Tell me please, Luce?" She begged her best friend.
"Fine," Lucy answered. "While we were visiting you one day, we saw someone looking into your room. He split as soon as he heard us coming though." Jackie looked at Jonathan, wondering both if it was him, or if he saw this person too. He just shrugged looking slightly surprised.
"Did you see his face?" She asked, curious to know who this strange person was. Both girls shook their heads.
"The only thing I really noticed, was that he was tall with brown hair." Betty wiggled her eyebrows, shooting a wink in her friend's direction. Jackie let out a giggle and shoved her shoulder.
"Shut up. I'm going to class." She rolled her eyes and stood up, Jonathan not far behind her. Jackie didn't really say much as she walked to her first period.
The rest of the school day went pretty standard for Jackie, even though she couldn't get over the fact that there was someone watching her as she was in the hospital. What had they seen? What did they know? She really wanted to know who that person was. After school, Betty hitched a ride with Jackie, who drove her to her house. The car ride started off quiet. Jackie reached for the radio, and Betty started to talk.
"J.R?" She asked. Jackie's hand paused on the dial for the radio.
"What's up, Bets?" She asked, her eyes trained on the road.
"I just- I feel like we've barely talked since... Last year." This got Jackie's attention.
"Is everything okay?" She asked, worried for one of her best friends. Something seemed off about Betty now that the two were alone.
"Yeah, yeah. I guess." Betty cleared her throat as Jackie turned into her driveway. The two got out and entered the house, Betty strangely quiet.
"Alright. What's going on with you?" Betty settled herself on the couch and faced Jackie.
"I don't know, J.R. I'm really scared I guess. And worried." Betty looked down and picked at her fingers. It was rare for Betty to be scared about anything.
"About what?" Betty looked up, clearly, she was apologetic.
"You."
