Chapter 67
They say that you should never fly on clouds for it's in the happiest of moments that thunders reap the sky. No matter how clean and bright the day seems, it's when you least expect it, that a storm can appear and tear your wings and make you land on the floor, way more harshly than you could have in all your life.
Yet despite how much your mind kept bugging you with the endless possibilities of something going wrong, you just couldn't help but be happy for it had been just some hours that you had accepted to be the wife of the man who had loved more than anyone in your life so far. It may be considered naive or even a neglection of outcomes but this was the one and only moment that you didn't want to ruin with your overthinking.
No matter what storm comes, whenever it comes, you will no longer be alone. Jimin will be there. He won't leave you no matter how many mistakes you make unconsciously or how much you display your flaws for he claims his love for you to be unconditional and so far, he had backed up that statement of him. There was nothing that could keep you from smiling brightly and giggling to yourself at every reply your mind did, of the way he held you and kissed you, on his car as he had driven you to work.
The ring on your finger felt heavier than any other accessories you had ever put on, its presence always noticeable to you, making your other hand go to it and touch it without a reason.
"God, I must look like a fool. I need to pull myself together." You murmured to yourself as your smile grew wider, then you got hold of your bag and sped up your pace, only to halt a few steps after realizing that you had yet to tell anyone this great news.
"Sira, Sira~ She will go crazy~" You roamed your pockets to find your phone and called her immediately, waiting a bit on the line until she peaked up your call.
"Good Morning Y/N~, How is it g-"
"Jimin proposed to me and I said yes!" You cut her sentence and silence fell on the other line briefly before you heard a loud scream that made you feel full of excitement.
"Oh My God, OH MY GOD!!!! My Friend is getting married!! OH MY. CONGRATULATIONS!!" Her cheerful voice made your eyes get teary suddenly, for her reaction was more than heartwarming besides loud.
"Thank you~~. You are the first one I told about this. Hope to see you after work. Have a good day~"
"Yah! You can't hang up! WE HAVE WEDDING PLANS TO DO?" You laughed at her words imagining her looking at nothing with an expression of anticipation and eagerness.
"That can wait, but my work can't so~ See you later. Love you~" You hang up not giving her the chance to say anything else, not knowing that once you cut the line she literally had started jumping around her living room, in which she had been left alone since Taehyung had left to send Nari home and go to his work after.
Pleased with that short phone call, you took a deep breath and placed your hand on the knob to open the door and enter Namjoon's vila but once you did so, to your surprise you came face to face with a Namjoon with bloodshot eyes, that almost jumped on you, thinking that you were someone else.
"Wow...Am, what are you standing behind the entrance for Sir?" You had taken some steps back as you had gotten jump scared from his sudden appearance and had forgotten to greet him, by asking him to justify his illogical actions first.
"I am sorry Secretary Y/N. I was just waiting for Secretary Elle to arrive." He replied right before he turned around and started pacing right and left, an action that he had been actually doing all night.
"Did...something happen Sir?" You titled your head at the side observing his evident anxious behaviour that made you worry a bit.
"It's nothing...just...please tell Secretary Elle that I need her in my office as soon as she reaches here."
"As you wish Sir." You bowed your head slightly to him and he started walking away only for the door to open behind you, making his steps halt in place and look back towards the entrance the way you did.
Secretary Elle seemed quite shocked at first sight, seeing him there for she had thought that he as always would be in his office and maybe just maybe she could manage to avoid him for most of the day after what happened last night. An occurrence which had regretted hugging him like that was a mistake that was bound to bring her only more misfortune.
"Good morning Y/N. How was your day yesterday? Have you drunk your coffee yet? Let me make it for you." She plastered a smile on her face and gave all her attention to you, hoping that if she was to pretend that nothing happened, so would Namjoon.
She took hold of your arm and as your eyes met, you understood that definitely something had gone down yesterday night and she was in need so some help, so you smiled back at her and started conversing about random things you had done the previous night as you both started walking ahead, intending to pass by Namjoon smoothly and naturally, yet once you did so, he started following you at a step or two distance without saying anything.
You could feel his aura from behind your back for it sure was strong. He felt like a boiling volcano ready to burst.
Upon reaching your desk, he passed by without saying a word and opened the wooden door to his office, which he entered while leaving the door open, making it clear that he was expecting a certain someone to follow him in there.
"Why does he look like he is ready to kill people? Did anything happen between you?" You threw your worried gaze at Elle, while you took off your bag and she left hers at the side of her desk and proceeded to take off her coat.
"It's okay, it's okay. I can definitely fix this." She tried to be positive, flashing you a smile, but her trembling hands gave her away and her smile faltered soon from her lips.
" I was tired and went to rest on one of the bedrooms and he came to wake me up and...I thought it was a dream..I-" She left those words to escape her lips before her eyes travelled on the ground, feeling shameful over herself and the fact that even though so many years had passed, she was still waiting for him to return to her. She was still waiting for the impossible to happen, for the slim chance of him remembering her. But those hopes were nothing more than pain to her reality. Those feelings were nothing but a burden she was trying to get rid of. She had to unlove him, even if it was the last thing she will do in her life. She had to succeed because deserved to be loved too. She had to choose herself over a past ghost of someone she truly loved, for he won't come back to her to love her. And now she was more than certain of that.
"...You...said anything you shouldn't have?" You added to her sentence and she lifted her eyes to meet yours before informing you that she had pulled him in a hug and referred to him endearingly. News that sure left you with widen eyes for a moment, but you snapped out of it as Namjoon's yell reached your ears and shook you both of your places.
"I AM WAITING! GET IN HERE!" His voice had sounded rather scary, to the point that you didn't want her to let Elle go in there alone, but she gave you a reassuring smile and headed towards the door, leaving it slightly open once on the other side, just so you could see and if needed, intervene to help her.
You rushed to take off your coat once she was out of sight and with slow and careful steps you approached the door and peeked through the crack. Namjoon was seated at his chair as Elle halted at a distance from his office and lowered her head before gifting him to hear the usual sentence. " What may I assist you with Sir?"
"The action you did yesterday-"
"Can we please leave that on the past, Sir? I already explained to you all I had to explain." She found the courage to cut him short, as her eyes travelled the floor, nervously.
"Yes, you sure explained but I still have one question for you and you have to answer me honestly. You must!" He stood up from his seat and she lifted her head to face him, feeling the need to back away as he approached closer to her, only to stand tall at a feet distance before her.
"I don't want to hear any questions coming out of your mouth. Just reply to mine and I give you my word, this issue gets buried here." His strict gaze had her feeling responsible for he must have something serious to question her, so she too gave him her word that she will give him an honest reply no matter what.
"Back when I had my memory, back when I didn't know you were my brother's secret girlfriend...had I ever shown any romantic interest towards you?" His question had her shocked as her eyes grew wide and her mind seemed to have frozen in time for a bit while you just left your mouth hanging open briefly for this morning sure had taken a very interesting start.
"I-..am..Sir-"
"Don't think of anything else. Just reply with a yes or no." Namjoon insisted for in no way he was going to back off from this conversation, especially after the hellish night he had gone through.
He had to know if all this time the reason he had misunderstood her was because of his own feelings instead. He had to know if he had ever made any move on her, if he had ever wanted her, or liked her. Even though a positive answer to that was scary for that meant that he had potentially betrayed his brother, he had to know, just what kind of person he really was when it comes to this woman, who he hates yet one simple touch of hers, literally managed to throw him in the flames of sin.
"What does that matter? You have a girlfriend now and she will soon be your fiance-" She tried to avoid a straightforward reply for she was uncertain of what emotions such truth could evoke and what consequences it may have.
'Okay. Did you like me back?" He followed her words shortly with another question that brought her to an even more difficult place for even if she could lie about his feelings, lying about her own was far more difficult.
"Just what has gotten into you. Why are you even-"
"ANSWER ME GOD DAMN IT!" He shouted at her face and Elle before even realizing it, had raised her hand and had slapped him across the face, the sound echoing in the atmosphere that fell dead silent.
You had held your breath while witnessing the scene, expecting chaos to go down as Namjoon brought back his head to face her, now with a red mark on his cheek that had been caught on fire, the way his head had been swallowed in momentary frustration at her and his own self.
Why was everyone like this with him? Why is it that no matter what he wonders about, somehow he ends up hurting someone by speaking of it? He should have known on his own, for it was his past but he didn't and that was just so frustrating to him for he could trust no one's words fully. No matter what anyone was to say to him, their words were to him always nothing more but a possible lie that he just couldn't prove as such.
Everyone lies and she had lied to him too and thus even if she was to reply to him right now, maybe he still shouldn't fully believe her, but no matter how angry he was and frustrated over her existence around him and no matter how much he tried to wrap himself in the veil of denial throughout the whole previous night, he just found no good enough lie to say to his own self and justify that sensation that had taken over him. The way her touch had gotten imprinted on his mind even though it was so short, the way the flames she lit up inside him kept calling for her.
Was he being crazy and unreasonable or had he just fallen victim to her seduction even though all the times he had thought that she was trying to get in his favour, it was proven a misunderstanding as for his brother's claims. She was Jin's girlfriend, and as thus she had no reason to like him yet he would have been lying if he was to say that every time that sentence had crossed his mind throughout the night, he hadn't felt like breaking something.
"I am sorry...I really didn't mean to-" Elle's face portrayed her worry as her hand had frozen mid-air but Namjoon got hold of it, bringing her tongue to cut her words sharp.
"The night of the accident, I see you there standing over my body...Your figure is clean through my bloody vision. It's the only memory I have. The one that haunts me every time a close my eyes." Namjoon lowered his voice, speaking for the first time things he had never spoken to anyone for he thought of her as someone who had something to do with his current situation and his accident.
She was untrustworthy, she was the most suspicious person of every other surrounding him yet here he was, being shaken by a brief moment that she shared his warmth with him. How pathetic, he thought to himself but he went on speaking anyway.
"Why were you there that day? Tell me, please. I need to know." He pleaded her with his gaze but Elle fell silent for her mind slipped in the chaos of uncertainty. What was the right thing to do was something she couldn't decide in mere seconds while he was staring at her, holding her arm and looking at her with that intense gaze.
She could either deny everything they ever had, crashing her own heart in the process or tell him everything by taking the risk of being accused as creasy, low or a gold digger. There was no benefit for her in either approach but she was well aware that telling him the truth could possibly hurt him more. Because he hated her and she knew he wouldn't like hearing that he ever had anything with her. She had decided to let him go already, she had decided to leave the past where it was for he was obviously not meant for her and so at this very moment, she shouldn't let herself get swayed by the false hope that him knowing would bring her anything good. There was no way he would ever believe that she truly loves him and he supposedly once did love her back.
"Please don't torture yourself with needless thoughts. You never looked my way. There's no reason you would. All I was and am is just a secretary and every confusing thought you have, is my fault. You can blame it on me. Put everything on me and just let everything go the day I leave this place...You can be free...you can be happy...so why look back at things you can no longer change?" She told him, her face betraying her emotions as she felt the pain dripping in her chest but her reply had done the contrary of repelling him, as such was her intention.
He let go of her regardless and as Elle was about to walk away, someone's voice startled you, making you shut the door properly and turn around, your heart thumping on your ears as you came face to face with none other but Namjoon's girlfriend. Lee Byeol.
