Chapter 19
Taehyung found himself entering the same hotel room in which he had recently met his aunt, followed by Jimin and Jaehyun. The latter one being a bit perplexed why his mother had told them to meet in this specific place instead of their own house or the house of one of his cousins. Anything but a hotel room that made him feel uncomfortable, but he had no time to complain.
Once she came to their view and they all stood in the silent room, Jimin handed to her the file he had kept hold of from the moment they had left the hospital, ignoring her cheerful greeting and the endearing gaze that she gave to both of them and especially Jimin since she had a long time since she last saw him. Unfortunately, though he had no energy to pretend to be happy nor to follow any proper ethical behavioral patterns for the moment.
"Auntie Jung, Please enlighten us about this situation. We need you to tell us the truth."Jimin uttered while a serious facial expression had taken over his face, one that he usually puts on in company meetings and situations where he wants to induce someone to comply with what he was asking of them.
His aunt however just froze under his gaze for a bit and after leaving her eyes to travel to her son's she opened the file, finding out that what they were talking about was what had crossed her mind a few seconds ago, making her grow this pale and distressed. She felt the ambient wavering all of a sudden, making her have the need to take some steps back and slowly grab on the arm of the couch in order to support herself as she took her seat. An action that made Jaehyun rush to her side reflexively out of worry for her while Taehyung seemed just instantly surprised a bit, unlike Jimin who's face showed no remorse whatsoever. As if he didn't even believe her.
"Mom, are you okay? Should I bring you some water?"Jaehyun questioned as he took hold of her hand gently.
"I will get it." Taehyung was the one that acted on his thought however and rushed to the mini-bar that was inside the room, soon coming back with a water bottle which he offered to her and Jaehyun opened it for her and made her take some sips gently.
"Now, if you have finished with your shocking act, can we go on?" Jimin interrupted the worrisome moment, making his aunt look at his cold gaze, which showed her clearly that he was not gonna be the one to leave space for her to pull any psychological tricks. He knew after all that when someone was to be cornered for wrongdoing, their first instinct would be to victimize and justify themselves but he didn't care much about that. He was not there to listen to her feelings rather than that all he wanted was the raw truth. Something that would end the storm of doubt within him. The fight in his mind between one side of him which was screaming to him that everyone was fake and another side that reduced to believe that his parents' love was such a thing.
"Hey, Can't you be a bit more considerate?" Jaehyun gave an annoyed look at Jimin as he found his behavior rude and disrespectful but while they maintained eye contact, he could tell that this was not the right time to challenge him in any way.
"It's okay. He is right. I will tell you. Since it came to this...I will. However...I want you to know that your mother had made me swear to never tell. AhnJong would really not have wanted this." His aunt referred in name to her sister, in an attempt to put emphasis that their now-dead mother wouldn't have been pleased with this outcome but somehow her statement made Jimin even more bothered as he only saw her words as a mere guilt trap which he was not going to let it work.
"What does that matter now? We can't delete what the doctor said to us. So instead of feeling the need to say all these things to justify yourself, just start speaking up aunt Jung." There he goes again, calling her as formally as he always used to, his aunt thought as Jimin replied to her. He was always the id who since little didn't seem fond of her, no matter how good she was to him and no matter how many times she had told him, to refer to her by her name only, Bitna as it was. Yet Jimin had never uttered her name. Only Taehyung would freely call her auntie Bitna and run to hug her. The memories of them back then were really fresh to her and honestly, she wished that in their lives, she was to always remain a fun and loving aunt, but that apparently was not gonna be possible to happen.
"I ...I made a mistake...I had an affair while I was married and somehow I got careless..."She spoke with her head low, feeling the shame weighing on her. Jaehyun was right beside her. She had let her son just hear that. Bitna really couldn't bring herself to lift her head up anymore.
The room fell in silence as all eyes were now on her, some wide open as Taehyung did not want to believe that still and some full of disappointment as Jaehyun despite the fact that he had already overheard her, hearing it coming out of her lips couldn't help but bring back inside him, that sad feeling. Jimin was the only one whose facial expression remained unfaced as he was not someone to show his emotions just to anyone and he definitely didn't want to show nor seem like he felt anything in front of her.
"You can't do that...Mom was your sister, you...didn't have an affair with my dad, right? Just tell me, that you didn't." Taehyung whispered his words as he gazed at her with a pleading expression, feeling the need for someone to deny that thought to him. His mother was like an angel to him. She was the kindest soul he had ever met. The thought only that the two people she loved so much could have potentially hurt her like that, broke him inside. His father swore to love her more than anything in his life and the smile she would give at him while he was to state that, a moment of happiness which he denied to let it get dipped in the label of hypocrisy and lying.
"What?Of course not! I would never! My affair was with a gardener that used to work on our house. I was unhappy and I have liked that man even before I was to get married. I never got too close however, I thought I would never dare. But after the birth of my first son, my marriage started getting worse and I started getting lonelier. His presence started giving meaning to my life and I know I shouldn't have but it happened...I got pregnant and I was scared. If my husband was to find out, I was done for. I couldn't even say that it was his cause he barely touched me after the birth of my first son. I was cornered-"
"Stop! Stop for god's sake!" Jaehyun yelled at her as he stood up and took some steps away from her, feeling disgusted and hurt by the words that were leaving her mouth. There sure were things that a child was better of not knowing about their parent and he sure felt like he didn't want to hear a word more.
"You can step out of the room if you can't handle this." Jimin looked at him in annoyance as he really didn't appreciate the fact that he interrupted her and he visibly made his aunt feel more burdened and hesitant to continue. It obviously wasn't easy for her too.
"Auntie, it's okay, no one is gonna blame you, just please go on." Taehyung kneeled before her and grabbed her hand, pleading her with his eyes to speak further as he was literally hanging from her lips at that moment and he cared not about anything else but the image of his dear parents to be redeemed inside him.
Bitna's eyes got filled with tears gazing at him as she couldn't help but feel incredibly sorry yet she did as she was asked and went on.
"AhnJong was the one who I trusted the most so I run to her for help. Your father happened to hear us however yet he didn't tell on me. He was a very kind man and loved my sister more than anything. He kept my affair hidden and together they came up with a plan to help me. They told everyone that AhnJong was pregnant again and when the months where my belly started growing too much to be hidden, your father told my husband that he needed me to help him as AhnJong was having complications with her pregnancy. With that excuse, they took me out of my house and I stayed in theirs till I gave birth...to you." She reached out her hand to cup Taehyung's cheek as she ended her sentence, watching his frozen face with despair and fear that he was gonna reject her truth. A truth that she never intended to tell him nor anyone.
" The day you were born, was a happy day for her. She held you in her arms as if you were hers. They looked at you with so much love and from that moment on I knew, that it didn't matter who gave birth to you. I could not be your parent but they could."She added as she observed Taehyung's eyes getting filled with tears.
"They both decided to give you the surname our family had before we got married and chose to take our husbands' surname. Kim. You were to carry part of me and her like that, you were to carry the blood of your birth mother and the one who loved you as one. I never requested it but I guess that was her way to make me feel included and comfort me. That I had not lost you, that I had not given up on you to protect myself. I had not covered up my mistake by sacrificing you. She gave me the chance to forever be part of your life too." Her voice broke at that point and she retrieved her hand, using it to hide her own face, as she could no longer face Taehyung. Because no matter how much her sister had tried to make her seem like a better person than she was, deep inside herself, Bitna blamed herself.
The room fell silent leaving only her muffled sobs to echo around while Taehyung was shedding his tears in silence still frozen in place, kneeled in front of her. Until he felt someone's hand touch his shoulder and turned around to meet Jimin's eyes that looked at him full of care.
"What are you crying for, you idiot? She loved you... They loved you. "Jimin uttered, guessing the poisoning thoughts that may have went on his brother's head but they had proved to them a million times that they were loved, till their last breath, that's all they had ever done.
"But you...You..."Taehyung mumbled back, his gaze softening as he kept looking at Jimin and he only smiled at him as if he wanted to tell him that he was okay.
"AhnJong had weak health, no matter how much they wanted, they could never had kids. However, they told such a thing to no one. Only I knew. The day Jimin was adopted, he was a newborn. His mother had abandoned him in the hospital and he was being discussed to be sent to an orphanage. That day I was in the hospital with AhnJong as she was being hospitalized for some days and we happened to hear the doctors talking about the poor newborn." Their aunt started talking again, with her face still hidden in between her palms.
"She couldn't help but feel for you. She kept insisting to see you and when Park came to the hospital and heard her wish, as always she rushed to fulfill it and when they saw you, they both fell in love with you. I remember how her eyes lit up, how her pale body suddenly seemed as if it got filled with life again...She asked you if you would accept her as her mother and you smiled for the first time to her. You were a miracle to her. A gift that gave her the strength to live a bit more. Her first son, Jimin." Her words managed to bring Jimin to lower his head, trying hard to not let himself break at that instant.
Why was this so difficult? Even though he was hearing that he was loved why did it stink so badly? Maybe it was the fact that when they were alive, he didn't know how much he meant to them, maybe it was because he will never have the chance to thank them for anything anymore. They were gone now. The best people he had ever met proved to be even better and he was not half as dissent towards them. It hurt like someone was burning his insides in flames. The regret tasted bitter in his tongue, the poison of guilt had started running again inside him. But he had none of them to cry for forgiveness anymore. He could never repay them enough. He was too late and that made him want to have the thought of ripping his skin a bit. It surely would hurt less.
----To be continued...
