Chapter 2 - Volume 1 - Tall Tales
Well...
Shit
Now is one of those split second types of decisions, one that doesn't offer much wiggle room in terms of wording. The truth it is then. "That I am not Ozpin, though if you'd be so courteous, I'd like to discuss this in a more... private setting. In a place where negative thoughts may attract deadly beasts, I'm sure you understand the value of holding one's tongue on certain matters."
The eyes of the enigmatic Headmaster narrow further, like he is trying to peer into my mind for the answers he seeks. Finally, he speaks "That I do... I am not one to assume the worst in people. Such an attitude does not get you far as
a teacher. I accept your request, we may speak in my office once you are sorted here. I do enjoy a good story, especially in those involving reincarnation." Ah, a fellow man of culture.
"Works for me." The nurse enters the room, locks the medical closet behind him, and wraps my chest. All the while, Ozpin stares from the corner of the room. I swear, he's about a pose away from being 'Menacing'. I don't take Ozpin for a bad man, but I can see 'under the hood' of his mind... he has many secrets, that I am sure of.

"That's quite the long elevator trip Ozpin, you ever consider a ground floor office?" Another chuckle and smirk. "A sentiment I've heard repeated many times. Now, tell me your story, if you would."
"Very well, hold on to your cane, old man, I have quite the tale to tell."
"I am Marcus Aurelius of planet Earth. Born 2043. Died 2061, just before my 18th birthday. I was what some would call farce. My mother could not naturally become pregnant, and so I was to be conceived in a lab, and placed inside my mother for normal development. An unknown group broke into the lab, and genetically modified many of the fertilized eggs awaiting transport. All modified eggs failed, except for two. Myself, and one for another family that disappeared without a trace. I am essentially an enhanced human. Stronger, faster, smarter, whatever. I matured, physically and mentally very quickly, studying all topics of science I could. Various forms of medicine and engineering being my specialty. Ultimately, I was a doctor trying to find a cure for a plague of which I was afflicted. It was dubbed the Creeping Plague, for it killed very slowly, some had the disease for years before they succumbed to their symptoms. It mainly affected the lungs, forcing a terrible cough. I perished shortly before I could finalize a cure. I'd had a temporary solution, a stimulant that halted the disease in early stages. Unfortunately, the disease had advanced too far for it to be of much use to me." I stopped to cough, the feeling all too familiar.
"Are you alright Marcus?"
"Yes yes, just a tickle in my throat. Where was I? Right. Some backstory before we move on though. Ever since the year 2021, most of the powers in my world were involved in a Third World War. It had been nearly 100 years of uneasy peace and proxy wars prior, but if I explain the other two, we'll be hear all day. The third war was terrible, even the most nihilistic of casualty estimates didn't come close to the actual cost. Billions dead. Nearly all major governments collapsed. The main reason for the conflict was the depleting reserves of easily accessible energy. We're talking continent wide famines and power outages. The big killer however, was the Creeping Plague. Many speculate whether or not it is a bioweapon. I'm pretty sure it isn't, but boy, was it difficult to work with. The Plague eventually overpowered my body my last few days I was simply bedridden, tearing my own lungs with my coughing. I succumbed shortly thereafter."
"What followed I'm entirely unsure of, so take this with a grain of salt. I was dead for an unknown amount of time, but then I awoke in a starry void. I met an entity, and they offered to grant me what I wished. I'd requested I be sent to a planet with It's own issues I could assist them with. So it was I awoke in the same forest you found me in. I have nothing apart from the clothes on my back, and my mind." Not entirely true, I'm going to keep my sixth sense to myself, I need something up my sleeves just in case.
"I know that it may be difficult to believe, what I claim is quite outlandish. However I can assure you, I am only here to help."
"A tall tale indeed... if you are indeed here to help, I am not foolish enough to refuse. While we have no actual plague, the creatures of Grimm are a blight on our world, and perhaps you could be of assistance. I am not ruler of Vale, but I have access to a substantial amount of financial resources. A workshop and raw material away from the main premises would be a drop in the pond of the vast sums this academy requires to function. I will also write you a note granting access to every book in the Library of Beacon. If you are what you claim to be, and I am quite perceptive, then I am willing to grant you this.
"Are you serious? Just like that? I thought it would take me years to once again work as I wish! What's the catch Oz? I'm sure you expect something of me."
"My conditions are simple. If I am to help you, you will be enrolled at Beacon as a student, as such, you will remain in Beacon and the city of Vale. We are going to be hosting a world viewed tournament this year, so if you could... discreetly install defenses, or an early warning system beyond the walls of Vale, that would put my mind at ease."
"I can most certainly do that Ozpin. It's likely my best bet to be enrolled in an academy. I have much to learn if I'm going to work in an entirely new world."
"That you do. The next year of students will arrive at the end of this coming month. During this time, your garage will be constructed in a secluded area of the Emerald Forest. If you are able, you may draw the schematics for the building yourself, and personalize it. Personally, I recommend you explore the city of Vale too. It's lovely this time of year."
I can't control my huge grin, not that he'd know, with the mask on anyway. "I'll have the building plans shipped up by the end of the week. I'm truly thankful Oz... Headmaster."
"Please, call me Ozpin. One more thing, you'll need this." Ozpin reaches into a desk cupboard and hands me what looks like one of those super old IPhones. "This is your scroll. On it has my emergency contact number. More importantly, it has the number of the dorm you will be staying in during your time here, and a bit of pocket money for clothing, ammunition, and other miscellaneous expenses. It may be a bit more than you expect, but only because you'll need a weapon for combat classes. Observing your person, you don't seem skilled in any martial art I'm familiar with, so I will message you directions to a well renowned weapon smith."
"If you've no more questions, you are free to leave and do as you wish. As much as I would enjoy continuing this conversation, you and I have work to do, and I have another appointment."

Some time later, in the Academy library
"So people really can have animal appendages in this world! I thought they just had this weird cosplay thing going on."
Marcus had already breezed through a stack of books taller than he, and started on another topic. He decided to stop at the last 100 years of history, estimating that would give him enough context to recent global politics. Atlas, a militaristic kingdom near the North Pole of Remnant was the leader in dust and weapons technology. Mistral was the largest kingdom, and a melting pot of culture. Vacuo... well, they were kinda poor. As far as Marcus could tell, Vacuo's main defense against the Grimm are the huntsman from Shade Academy.
That leaves Vale. Vale is the most normal of the 4 major kingdoms, relative to Marcus. Nothing really special about it. The safest kingdom alongside Atlas, the many natural borders and rigorous perimeter defense made Vale prime real-estate. Alongside the moderate climate, Marcus could find himself greatly enjoying Vale, but Atlas has to be his favorite.
No surprise the mad scientist loves the RnD capital of the world. They're the leading innovators in dust and aura research. Don't even get him started on dust, semblance, and aura, or "soul magic bullshit". Although Marcus was somewhat (extremely) intrigued by these new concepts, he'd have to read up on them more. Which brings us back to exactly what Marcus is reading. Books about Dust and aura. You see, Marcus had the simple plan of "I'll just go for everything that is new, and read extensively about them." Thankfully, this world was quite simple. At this rate, Marcus estimated he'd be finished catching up with everything important within the next 2 days. The specifics could wait until he got his garage. He reckoned he'd spend a whole day working out the design for his own Outer Heaven.
"Obviously," Marcus thought, "it will have suitable facilities for the manufacturing of whatever I need, Be they weapons, ammo, electronics, etc. I'll be able to acquire many of these resources quite easily if the Emerald Forest is as mineral rich as I've read. May need to get closer to the heart of the forest though, all the easy stuff has likely been picked clean."
And so, ever the diligent student, Marcus cleared his mind and focused the whole of his being to the books in front of him.
